Burning Mist
by Laura Baeza
Description
“We believed that nothing would to hurt more than the disappearance of Irene, but we were wrong; far from knowing the pain of true loss.”
For Esther, the memories of her childhood and youth are reduced to the mental illness of her sister, Irene, the special care she needed, and the always insufficient precautions that were set in order to protect her. Afterwards, Esther’s memories are all about her sister’s disappearance and murder. So, how is it possible that in Barcelona, years after these events, she sees her sister on the tv screen? How can that woman in the middle of disturbances in Hidalgo be her allegedly dead sister?
Esther crossed the Atlantic before to escape from the pain and loss, but above it all, from the guilt. Now, she will have to make the journey the other way around to search for the truth that was taken from her, alongside Irene. Is it true that, as many other women in Mexico, she was kidnapped and murdered?

Reviews
“The author sketches her characters revealing details little by little, with elegance, creating a detective-like atmosphere that is admirably sustained throughout the story, which keeps the readers on the edge of its pages, with a prevailing curiosity while speculating theories about what may have happened.”
Isabel Zapata / Revista de la Universidad de México
“Niebla ardiente offers an answer to how to write about the violent Mexican reality against women and how to talk about murders and disappearances without falling into the trap of the sensationalist story. It does not present its characters as victims of a faceless monster and avoids the sensationalism of the feminicide epidemy. Albeit organized crime is at the center of the novel and joins the various characters, Baeza does not limit herself to concoct a criminal plot; instead, she builds a nostalgic story about the different ways in which people deal with loss.”
