        Gender, crime and empire

        Convicts, settlers and the state in early colonial Australia

        by Kirsty Reid, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie, Martin Hargreaves

        Between 1803 and 1853, some 80,000 convicts were transported to Van Diemen's Land. Revising established models of the colonies, which tend to depict convict women as a peculiarly oppressed group, Gender, crime and empire argues that convict men and women in fact shared much in common. Placing men and women, ideas about masculinity, femininity, sexuality and the body, in comparative perspective, this book argues that historians must take fuller account of class to understand the relationships between gender and power. The book explores the ways in which ideas about fatherhood and household order initially informed the state's model of order, and the reasons why this foundered. It considers the shifting nature of state policies towards courtship, relationships and attempts at family formation which subsequently became matters of class conflict. It goes on to explore the ways in which ideas about gender and family informed liberal and humanitarian critiques of the colonies from the 1830s and 1840s and colonial demands for abolition and self-government.

        Beginning ethnic American literatures

        by Helena Grice, Peter Barry, Candida Hepworth, John McLeod, Maria Lauret, Martin Padget, Annete Musker

        Since the late 1960s, American literature has been revitalised by the work of writers such as Toni Morrison, Sherman Alexie, Sandra Cisneros and Maxine Hong Kingston. An introduction to the study of ethnic American fictions organised into four sections, each written by a specialist in the fields of African American, Asian American, Chicano/a and native American literature. Writers are discussed in their cultural/political contexts and literary traditions (rather than as exceptions or as individuals, or on a generic basis). The book highlights common themes in ethnic writing as well as specificities, and has extensive suggestions for further reading as well as a critical introduction regarding the concept of 'ethnic writing'. No competing titles - there are no textbooks, no beginners' books nor any systematised combination of ethnic fictions such as this - only edited collections on each area. ;

        From entertainment to citizenship

        Politics and popular culture

        by John Street, Sanna Inthorn, Martin Scott

        From entertainment to citizenship reveals how the young use shows like X-factor to comment on how power ought to be used, and how they respond to those pop stars - like Bono and Bob Geldof - who claim to represent them. It explores how young people connect the pleasures of popular culture to the world at large. For them, popular culture is not simply a matter of escapism and entertainment, but of engagement too. The place of popular culture in politics, and its contribution to democratic life, has too often been misrepresented or misunderstood. This book provides the evidence and analysis that will help correct this misperception. It documents the voices of young people as they talk about popular culture (what they love as well as what they dislike), and as they reveal their thoughts about the world they inhabit. It will be of interest to those who study media and culture, and those who study politics. ;

        Spectaculum 37

        Sechs moderne Theaterstücke

        by Samuel Beckett, Sean O’Casey, Edward Bond, Thomas Brasch, Cecil P. Taylor, Martin Walser, Elmar Tophoven

        Samuel Beckett zeigt in Katastrophe, wie ein Gefangener in Szene gesetzt wird. Ihm gelingt zweierlei: die Katastrophe des Gefangenen zu zeigen und zugleich die ›Katastrophe‹ dessen, der dieses Elend darzustellen versucht. Edward Bond nennt sein neues Stück »Sommer« im Untertitel ein ›europäisches‹ Stück und sagt, er schreibe nicht über einen Deutschen (der in dem Stück von den Greueln der Vergangenheit berichtet, als beschreibe er einen Sonntagsausflug), sondern er schreibe über das Böse als etwas ganz Banales. C.P. Taylor versteht sein Stück »so gut, so schlecht« über den Nazi-Professor Halder als Frage nach seiner eigenen (unserer) Rolle hinsichtlich der ›Friedensverbrechen‹ der westlichen Welt gegenüber der Dritten Welt. Martin Walser untersucht, ob Abhängigkeit und Selbstverwirklichung notwendig ein Widerspruch sind. Zeitlich näher ist uns Rotter, den Thomas Brasch in seinem gleichnamigen Stück beschreibt. Wie soll man einen neuen Staat aufbauen, wenn die Menschen dieselben geblieben sind? Das Irland O'Caseys, wie weit ist das? Viel näher, als man denken könnte. Das, was in der Routine des Alltags zur Selbstverständlichkeit geworden ist, bricht unvermutet heftig aus: der bigotte Katholizismus des Stadtrats Reiligan und der ihn unterstützenden Geistlichkeit, der primitive Antikommunismus.

        Der Wahrheit auf der Spur

        Die öffentlichen Auftritte

        by Thomas Bernhard, Wolfram Bayer, Raimund Fellinger, Martin Huber

        Wenn Thomas Bernhard sich öffentlich äußert, drängt sich der Eindruck auf, er verhalte sich genauso wie die Hauptpersonen in seinen Romanen und Theaterstücken: Da wird die Welt zum Katastrophenroman und zum sinnlosen Schauspiel, in dem Bornierte und Böswillige, Nichtwisser und Nichtkönner agieren, die es in gerechtem Zorn und kunstvoller Übertreibung anzuklagen und zu verurteilen gilt. Vorher werden sie aber, Höchststrafe, der Lächerlichkeit überführt. Deshalb konnte es nicht ausbleiben, daß Bernhards Interventionen ständig von Skandalen begleitet sind: Eine frühe Kritik am Spielplan trägt ihm einen Prozeß des Intendanten ein, die Dankesrede bei einer Preisverleihung mündet in der Absage einer weiteren Preisverleihung, eine Rezension läßt einen Minister nach dem Sendeverbot eines Bernhard-Porträts rufen, ein Interview erregt Politiker und Journalisten gleichermaßen. Der vorliegende Band zeigt den »öffentlichen Bernhard«: Er enthält, in chronologischer Reihenfolge, seine gewichtigen journalistischen Arbeiten, seine Leserbriefe, seine öffentlichen Erklärungen sowie die folgenreichen Interviews. Er beginnt mit einem Salzburger Vortrag aus dem Jahr 1954 und endet mit den letzten von ihm formulierten Zeilen, einem Leserbrief, der drei Tage nach seinem Tod erscheint. Hier ist nachzuvollziehen, wie Bernhard von der Öffentlichkeit gesehen werden möchte, wie er mit ihr spielt, wie er sie für seine Zwecke benutzt, Skandale inszeniert – und er gleichzeitig seine Vorlieben, seine Sympathien, seine Vorbilder preist.
