The traditional publishing house is one of Germany's best-known advice publishers and has been based in Leipzig for 75 years. Emerging from the former Verlag für die Frau, the largest fashion and advice publisher in the GDR, today's BuchVerlag für die Frau successfully continues the book programme. Today, it is a constant on the German book market as a whole. The program is strongly positioned in the culinary field, which includes the cookbook classics "We cook well" and "Das Backbuch" as well as the Thuringian kitchen library. Another successful series is the mini-library, which now contains 360 volumes. First published in 1985, it will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2020. The Publishing House and its History Established in St. Petersburg in 1792, today Gerstenberg is one of Germany’s oldest publishing houses. A family business, the publishing house moved to new headquarters in Hildesheim in 1796 and to this day occupies the same address in the old city marketplace as it did then. The most important branch of the publishing business, however, was the Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, which, incidentally, is the oldest daily newspaper still in existence in Germany. Today, the name of Gerstenberg is synonymous with delightful, innovative books of aesthetic design and high-quality content for children and young adults that compete very successfully also on the international market. An adult range comprising illustrated books, non-fiction and cookery books also forms part of the Gerstenberg portfolio. Program Gerstenberg publishes board picture books, picture books, children’s and young adult narrative literature and non-fiction. With Eric Carle’s »The Very Hungry Caterpillar« (»Die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt«) and Rotraut Susanne Berner’s ›discovery picture books‹ (›Wimmelbücher‹), Gerstenberg became one of the best-known children’s book publishers. In 1999, the anthology of poetry »Dunkel war’s, der Mond schien helle«, came out as the first in Gerstenberg’s series of household compendiums, a segment that has since developed into a main pillar of the program. Get Fresh Books Publishing is a non-profit, cooperative press devoted to amplifying diverse voices in poetry and making the publication process accessible to marginalized communities. Our primary objective is to provide opportunities for underrepresented voices by eliminating economic and societal barriers, such as submission fees and contests, which may inhibit marginalized voices from contributing to the literary conversation. As a cooperative press, we encourage manuscript submissions from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities and people living with mental illnesses. By doing so, we explicitly reject any “ism” or phobia which seeks to suppress the voices of those who receive insufficient or inadequate representation in literature. In the four short years of our founding, we have been able to preserve our commitment to diversity and inclusivity by publishing the work of 12 talented and distinct poets, whose poetry cover a wide range of topics from ethnicity, sexuality and religion to immigration, suicide and discrimination. Our press’s cooperative process of integrating the ideas and skills of our poets, editors and publisher have given us the ability to bring fresh and diverse voices into the literary world. With the help of donations, grants and private investments, we have been able to publish each literary work without charging a single submission fee to ensure that poets and writers of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, abilities, and economic statuses would have their voices heard.
