      Great Nation Needs Bigger City

      by LU Ming

Winner of the 2017 WENJIN BOOK AWARDS. Great Nation Needs Bigger City is a comprehensive presentation about the research results of Professor Lu Ming’s work in many years. It focuses on the realistic issues in the current process of urban and rural economic development in China. The urbanization process in China has only been half-way through but the problems in the big cities and in the countryside are coming into the public spotlight. Comparing the current situations in China with global experiences, based on the local realities and practical theories, the author argues strongly about the importance of developing big cities in China. He also pays special attention to the path of development of Shanghai, systematically analyzing the advantages of big cities for the individuals, the communities and for the entire nation. It is only when allowing the market to have its full influences on labor force and other social production factors, the difficult contemporary social issues can be resolved thoroughly. The focuses of the government functions should be put on the aspects where the market cannot cast its influences, for instance, the infrastructures and public services. Through this book, the author tries to call for the cancellation of the restrictions against free flows of the domestic population, and to advocate the development of big cities in order to help the urbanization process in China speed up. Only through aggregation, only through pursuing the balancing of the per capita GDP instead of the regional GDP, the economic developments can be truly balanced, which will eventually benefit the nation and its people greatly.

      Space in Art History

      by WU Hung

Space in Art History is a collection of a series of lectures by Professor Wu Hong, who was invited by the OCAT Institute to hold these lectures at the University of Chicago Center in Beijing, from June 20th to June 22nd, 2016. The analysis of visual objects in the studies of art history has always been centered with two core concepts, “image” and “form”. However, “space” and its relevant concepts have been re-occurring continuously in the author’s writing about art history, based on which, a framework about observing, describing and explaining artworks is now coming into being. This book uses “space” as the main thread, integrating the author’s studies in many years about Chinese art history at a methodological level. From the perspective of an art educator, the author also, for the first time, started a form of “jiangxiban” (a combination of speech delivery and study workshop) for young students in China, in order to summarize the intentions of his past research, and to explain his experiences of his scholarly work.

The Historical Genes of the China Path

      by HAN Zhu

What kind of social system should a nation or a country choose for themselves? This is determined by the tradition and the historical genes of this nation or country. From the system of enfeoffment to the system of prefectures and counties, from the well-field system to the average-land system, from the hereditary system to the imperial examination system... the Chinese civilization matured early, and has been through various changes of the dynasties. The concept of centralization and grand unification, the idea of people generated from the flat society, these go through the entire history, and have become the ideal foundation where Scientific Socialism in China is constructed and developed. What are the basic features of the traditional Chinese culture? What are the historical reasons for China keeping on the socialist path? What are the historical roots for China to have a unitary state which regards the central government as its core? Through answering these questions and exploring the historical progress of establishing a modern China by the Communist Party of China, the author argues that it is necessary for China to choose a unitary state with a centralized government, and to choose the socialist path. This is a historical inevitability, and a choice made by the people and the reality.

Three Hundred Years of Wars During the Southern and Northern Dynasties

Military and Politics in China, 4th to 6th Century

      by LI Shuo

Usually our imaginations about ancient warfare are based on novels, tales or other forms of literature, but most of the battle scenes from these literary works are merely fictional. They are not historically true. In Three Hundred Years of Wars During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, by collecting and analyzing various sorts of historical materials, seeking clues from the descriptions of warfare scattered in many historical documents, and relying on the newest research findings from recent studies, the author draws detailed and vivid pictures for many major battles during the Wei-Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties. At the same time, this books reveals many details about the campaign modes and the evolution of the tactics for cavalry and infantry at that period of time, also includes discussions about the influences of geography, climate and finances on warfare. Hence, this book fulfills what was lack in the official historical documents and ancient canons. It also offers a new military perspective to look at the history of the Wei-Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties.
