        by Zeba Khan, Nicoleta Anca Sutan

        Nanotechnology research and its application in agriculture has become a major focus in recent years. Nanoformulations offer the possibility to develop more efficient and less damaging agrochemicals in the environment. Smart delivery systems for nanosensors, molecules that can help to detect biotic or abiotic stresses before they can affect production, are being developed and applied. Nanotechnology also provides new techniques for genetic manipulation and plant breeding. The use of nanoformulations in agriculture is increasingly being used to enhance food values, reduce agricultural inputs, improve nutrient contents and create a longer shelf life for many products. Nanotechnology is also being applied to many aspects of food security, disease treatment, new tools for pathogen detection, effective delivery systems and packaging materials. It is hoped that all these applications will help meet the needs of a growing population, and help mitigate the effects of climate change and other ecological disturbances. This book highlights new applications of these nanoforms in the field of agricultural science.It is written by an international team of experts from across this broad discipline.The book is essential reading for graduate students, researchers and practitioners involved in the application of nanotechnology in agriculture. Food, risk and politics

        Scare, scandal and crisis - insights into the risk politics of food safety

        by Ed Randall

        This is a book about the risk politics of food safety. Food-related risks regularly grab the headlines in ways that threaten reasoned debate and obstruct sensible policy making. In this book, Ed Randall explains why this is the case. He goes on to make the case for a properly informed and fully open public debate about food safety issues. He argues that this is the true antidote to the politics of scare, scandal and crisis. The book skilfully weaves together the many different threads of food safety and risk politics and offers a particularly rewarding read for academics and students in the fields of politics and media studies. It will also appeal to scholars from other disciplines, particularly social psychology and the food sciences. The book is a lively and exceptionally readable account of food safety and risk politics that will engage policy makers and the general reader. It promises to help us all manage food safety issues more intelligently and successfully. ;

        The child at risk

        paedophiles, media responses and public opinion

        by Anneke Meyer, Chantal Hamil

        Paedophilia continues to be a public and emotive topic in contemporary Britain which is capable of generating great and varying levels of interest, concern and condemnation. The child at risk charts these social responses and unravels their underlying dynamics through detailed empirical research and theoretical analysis. Anneke Meyer looks beyond the media and 'moral panics' for explanations of emotive social responses and the paradox pervading them (the paradox of increased regulation, of paedophiles and children, coinciding with continuing popular concern). Drawing on and developing a wide range of theoretical frameworks, the book identifies a number of dynamics which produce concern and renders regulation designed to reduce fears ineffective. These dynamics include the moral rhetoric of childhood and the exposition of the crisis of neo-liberalism and conceptualisations of 'the paedophile' as a dangerous pervert. As a result the book points beyond its immediate subject and furthers understanding in the areas of risk, childhood and governance, as well as collective concerns and emotions. It will be essential reading in sociology, media studies and for those interested in media representation and governance. ;

        Risk and Safety Management in the Leisure, Events, Tourism and Sports Industries

        by Mark Piekarz, Ian Jenkins, Peter Mills

        The management of risk and safety is not simply a matter of trying to remove risks, but is necessary and vital to these industries. Sensible risk management is concerned with making the most of the positive opportunities or reducing the negative risks. This books shows how the absence of explicit risk practices is not necessarily an absence of risk management, and how many existing operational and strategic practices can be understood as part of a process of risk and safety management. Its main objective is to develop greater clarity in the communication of risks and the development of safety programmes, illustrating how organisations can use a single language of risk, relevant for all levels of management and areas of operation.

        Zerstörung des moralischen Selbstbewußtseins: Chance oder Gefährdung?

        Praktische Philosophie in Deutschland nach dem Nationalsozialismus

        by Peter Rohs, Forum für Philosophie Bad Homburg, Siegfried Blasche, Wolfgang R. Köhler, Wolfgang Kuhlmann, Alan Posener

        Praktische Philosophie ist wesentlich Rekonstruktion von vortheoretischen moralischen Intuitionen und daher angewiesen auf ein grundsätzliches Vertrauen in die Gültigkeit des von ihr zu Rekonstruierenden. In kaum einem Teil der Welt wurde nun das Vertrauen in diese vortheoretischen moralischen Intuitionen derart tiefgehend und nachhaltig erschüttert, ja gebrochen, wie das in Deutschland durch den Nationalsozialismus geschah. Dieses Faktum bedeutet für die Moralphilosophie in Deutschland sowohl Chance wie auch Gefährdung. Es ist zugleich ein wichtiger Schlüssel für das Verständnis sowohl der besonderen Spannungen zwischen den verschiedenen Positionen der praktischen Philosophie innerhalb Deutschlands wie auch der Sonderstellung der praktischen Philosophie aus Deutschland gegenüber entsprechenden Bemühungen aus anderen westlichen Demokratien, die aus der ambivalenten Befangenheit der deutschen Philosophen resultiert.

        A Case Study of Bt Maize in Kenya

        by Edited by Angelika Hilbeck, David A. Andow

        International forums have identified the need for comprehensive, transparent, scientific methods, for the pre-release testing and post-release monitoring of transgenic plants to ensure environmental safety. There is also wide recognition that the regulatory and scientific capacity for conducting these types of assessments needs to be strengthened.In response to these requirements, a GMO Guidelines Project was established - under the aegis of the International Organization for Biological Control - to develop biosafety testing guidelines for transgenic plants. This book is one of the first outputs from this project. The book aims, using the case study of Bt maize, to detail generic approaches to the evaluation of environmental impact of GM technologies. This book focuses on transgenic maize in Kenya. This maize includes genetic material derived from the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which naturally produces proteins that are toxic to some insects. The book explores both the environmental and agricultural impacts of transgenic plants. It draws out general risk assessment guidelines, and demonstrates the need for case-by-case analysis. Although focused on Kenya and Bt Maize, the book's findings and recommendations are relevant and applicable to a multitude of nations and GM crops.
