Der Wissenschaftler, Kulturkritiker und Schriftsteller wurde am 19. März 1907 in Köln geboren. Er studierte Jura, Geschichte und Philosophie in Köln, Bonn und Berlin. Als Jude verfolgt, war er von 1933 bis 1945 in der Emigration in Frankreich und in der Schweiz. Von 1948 bis 1963 lehrte er Geschichte der Nationalliteraturen an der Universität Leipzig. Zwischen 1965 und 1973 war er Professor für Deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Technischen Universität Hannover. Danach lebte er als Honorarprofessor in Tübingen. 1935, im Exil, begann er mit den Vorarbeiten für sein großes Werk über Georg Büchner; ohne Zuspruch von Carl J. Burckhardt wäre das Opus magnum nicht beendet worden. 1972 erschien eine Neuausgabe im Suhrkamp Verlag. 40 Titel von ihm sind seitdem in »seinem« Verlag publiziert worden, darunter Bücher über Goethe und Brecht, Thomas Mann und Richard Wagner; der letzte in diesen Tagen: »Erinnerungen an Willy Brandt«. Bundeskanzler Schröder drückte darüber brieflich noch seine Hochachtung aus. Hans Mayer war ein Lehrer für uns Deutsche. Ein Wissenschaftler, der mitten im Stalinismus Autoren wie Kafka, Proust, Joyce und Bloch verteidigte, der, wo immer in der Welt er lehrte, Literatur befragte, ob sie geeignet sei, Humanität zu befördern. Ein Gelehrter zwischen den Fronten, dessen wichtigste Werke nicht zufällig den Unbotmäßigen und »Außenseitern« gelten. Seine Erinnerungen waren Erinnerungen eines »Deutschen auf Widerruf«. Die Beschwörungen eines anderen Deutschland bereiteten neuen Kräften wie Uwe Johnson den Weg. Hans Mayer ist Ehrenbürger der Städte Köln und Leipzig, Ehrendoktor der Universitäten in Brüssel, Wisconsin und Leipzig, Ehrenprofessor der Universität Peking, Träger des »Großen Verdienstkreuzes mit Stern und Schulterband der Bundesrepublik Deutschland«. Hans Mayer, Nestor der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft, starb am Sonnabend, dem 19. Mai 2001, im Alter von 94 Jahren in Tübingen.

The new book by the well-known Ukrainian historian, chief of the Department of history of National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, professor Natalia Yakovenko, despite being a university textbook and a propaedeutic course on a professional subject, is written in a simple and easy to read manner which is far from academic cliché and embodies high academic style in its best meaning. However, the word 'textbook' even in its most positive meaning applies to this book only as a kind of mask that hides much more complex structure, not only stylistically but by its content and pragmatism as well. As the professor herself admits, this book does not belong to any classic genres. This is not a history of historiography, not a methodology of history and this is not an introduction to history as well.

Theodor W. Adorno wurde am 11. September 1903 in Frankfurt am Main geboren und starb am 06. August 1969 während eines Ferienaufenthalts in Visp/Wallis an den Folgen eines Herzinfarkts. Von 1921 bis 1923 studierte er in Frankfurt Philosophie, Soziologie, Psychologie und Musikwissenschaft und promovierte 1924 über Die Transzendenz des Dinglichen und Noematischen in Husserls Phänomenologie. Bereits während seiner Schulzeit schloss er Freundschaft mit Siegfried Kracauer und während seines Studiums mit Max Horkheimer und Walter Benjamin. Mit ihnen zählt Adorno zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der »Frankfurter Schule«, die aus dem Institut für Sozialforschung an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt hervorging. Sämtliche Werke Adornos sind im Suhrkamp Verlag erschienen. Rolf Tiedemann wurde 1932 in Hamburg geboren. Im Zuge seines Studiums der Philosophie, Germanistik und Soziologie in Hamburg, Göttingen, Berlin und schlussendlich in Frankfurt am Main, war Tiedemann ab 1959 als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter und später als persönlicher Assistent bei Theodor W. Adorno beschäftigt. 1964 promovierte er mit der ersten Dissertation über Walter Benjamin bei Adorno und Max Horkheimer. Gemeinsam mit Hermann Schweppenhäuser übernahm er 1970 die Herausgeberschaft der Gesamtausgaben von Adorno und Walter Benjamin. Von 1985 bis 2002 war er Direktor des Theodor W. Adorno Archivs in Frankfurt, von wo aus er u.a. die Ausgaben der Nachgelassenen Schriften Adornos initiierte. Vielfach rezipiert und in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt sind die von Tiedemann edierten Bände des Passagenwerks von Benjamin und der Ästhetischen Theorie sowie des Beethoven von Adorno. Rolf Tiedemann verstarb am 29. Juli 2018.
