        Letters from My Mentor Yuan Longping

        by Mao Changxiang

        This book embodies 20 letters professor Yuan Longping wrote to his student Dr. Mao Changxiang in the 1980s and 1990s. Professor Yuan Longping, internationally known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”, had developed the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s and helped alleviate famine and poverty around the world. In the late 20th century, when the communication means were not yet developed enough, professor Yuan wrote a lot of letters to Dr. Mao Changxiang, the researcher of Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center at that time, to discuss about the development of hybrid rice research. These letters were written in Chinese or English, most of which are originals and have not been published before and therefore are very valuable documents in the history of hybrid rice research.

        Auswilderung

        Roman

        by Bettina Suleiman

        Freizeit? Schlaf? Kein Kommentar. Was wären die Konsequenzen?

        Bright Star

        Die Geschichte von John Keats und Fanny Brawne

        by John Keats, Adolf Girschick, Christa Schuenke, Wulf Teichmann, Jane Campion

        Who are you?

        by Artem Chekh

        “Who are you?” hears young Tymofyi from Feliks, his friend and foe, torturer and mentor, a man shell-shocked by a faraway war. “Who am I?” asks himself the almost-adult, autobiographical Tymofyi at the end of the novel. The road from the first question to the second is inevitable for any coming of age novel. In the case of Artem Chekh - coming of age in the shadow of repulsive experiences from a foreign war, which suddenly turns out to be only the mind and body’s training in preparation of a war of our own, though we won't find it in this novel. However, we are likely to find all those childish and youthful initiations, through which we all had to fight on our path towards adult lives that turn out to be unlike anything we had imagined.

        Zionism in Arab discourses

        by Ofir Winter, Uriya Shavit

        Zionism in Arab discourses presents a ground-breaking study of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Through analyses of hundreds of texts written by Arab Islamists and liberals from the late-nineteenth century to the 'Arab Spring', the book demonstrates that the Zionist enterprise has played a dual function of an enemy and a mentor. Islamists and liberals alike discovered, respectively, in Zionism and in Israeli society qualities they sought to implement in their sown homelands. Focusing on Palestinian, Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian political discourses, this study uncovers fascinating and unexpected Arab points of views on different aspects of Zionism; from the first Zionist Congress to the First Lebanon War; from gardening in the early years of Tel Aviv to women's service in the Israeli Defence Forces; from the role of religion in the creation of the state to the role of democracy in its preservation. This study presents the debates between and within contesting Arab ideological trends on a conflict that has shaped, and is certain to continue and shape, one of the most complicated regions in the world. ;

        'Other' Spanish theatres

        Erasure and inscription on the twentieth-century Spanish stage

        by Maria M. Delgado

        'Other' Spanish theatres challenges established opinions on modern Iberian theatre by considering the roles of contrasting figures and companies who have impacted upon both the practice and the perception of Spanish and European stages. In questioning the primacy of the dramatist, this pioneering study offers a new interpretation of a nation's theatrical culture that has been viewed primarily through the prisms of a select number of playwrights. Accordingly many of the conclusions reached are new ones, and the case, for acknowledging the wide influence of Spanish practitioners on theatre in Europe and the Americas is made in persuasive terms. Through a bold documentation and interrogation of key productions and their reception both at home and abroad, 'Other' Spanish theatres focuses on the doing of performance, asking provocative questions around how performances are tested against the texts that remain. In a broad and detailed study Delgado selects six case studies which map out alternative readings of a nation's theatrical innovation through the twentieth century: muse and mentor to Federico Garcia Lorca, Margarita Xirgu; theatrical innovator and influence on Orson Welles, Enrique Rambal; tragedienne Maria Casares feted by George Craig Camus, Genet and Cocteau; actress, producer and director Nuria Espert; international director Lluis Pasqual and Catalan performance company La Cubana. ;

        »Wir haben das Leben wieder vor uns«

        Briefwechsel 1938 bis 1949

        by Ernst Bloch, Wieland Herzfelde, Jürgen Jahn

        Den Gründer und Leiter des legendären Malik-Verlages hat Ernst Bloch wahrscheinlich erst im April 1936 persönlich kennengelernt: Wieland Herzfelde nimmt die aus Paris kommenden Blochs auf dem Prager Hauptbahnhof in Empfang und kümmert sich in rührender Weise um die Ankömmlinge und ihre Sorgen. Von diesem Augenblick an wächst zwischen den beiden Männern ein ebenso herzlicher wie freundschaftlicher Kontakt, der auch über die langen Jahre des Exils in den USA gepflegt wird, wohin Bloch 1938 und Herzfelde 1939 emigrieren müssen.Herzfelde hat die einzige Buchpublikation Blochs in den USA in dieser Zeit ermöglicht (Freiheit und Ordnung, 1946), aber die Korrespondenz reduziert sich nicht auf eine bloße Autor-Verleger-Beziehung: Sie ist ein beredtes Zeugnis gegenseitiger Solidarität in schwierigen Lagen. So erweist sich Herzfelde als kundiger Berater und zuverlässiger Vertrauter in Dingen des praktischen Lebens wie in Sachen Politik; und Bloch ist kluger Mentor und erster Kritiker bei der Entstehung der heiter-bitteren, nachdenklichen Geschichten des Buches Immergrün. Mit 201 Zeugnissen ist dieses Briefkonvolut fast lückenlos überliefert und gehört zu den umfangreichsten Korrespondenzen der amerikanischen Exiljahre Blochs: eine detailreiche und intime Quelle zu Lebens- und Werkgeschichte beider Briefpartner.

        MEET THE MOST IMPORTANT FRIEND YOU’LL EVER HAVE! Think of your family, your closest friend, a beloved pet. It’s only natural you’d want to know everything you can about them.  But we scarcely ever think how much we don’t know about the one friend we could never live without — the Earth, the only home we’ll have throughout our entire lives. We study geography because we want to learn about anything that has to do with Earth or anything that lives on Earth. This delightful, comprehensive book will teach you, step-by-step: To understand basic physical systems that affect our everyday life. To develop a mental map of your community and the world so you can understand the “where” of places and events. To explain how human and physical systems have arranged and changed the surface of the Earth. To understand the relationship between the physical environment and society. To provide insight for wise management decisions about how the planet’s resources should be used. To understand global interdependence and to become a better global citizen. The Way of Inanna

        A Heroine’s Guide to Living Unapologetically

        by Seana Zelazo

        Myth Made ManifestOver 4000 years ago in ancient Sumer, some of the first mythographers inscribed the stories and myths of the Goddess Inanna on clay tablets in cuneiform. These incredible findings were unearthed, and the fragments were painstakingly pieced together and translated. What they discovered were the ways Inanna was heralded as a goddess who embodies polarities: impatient and deliberate, an attentive lover and fierce warrior, connected to fertility as well as death-making her an accessible, relatable, and inspiring representation of the Divine Feminine as she stands in her power and multidimensionality. The Way of Inanna is a field guide to heart-centered living through the wisdom of the Sumerian Goddess of Love. Each chapter deconstructs sacred narratives in which the Goddess navigates the seven gates of her soul's journey from awakening to ascension. More than a simple retelling, the book is myth made manifest in which Inanna becomes a means to accessing our own ascension and alchemical magic within our modern, contemporary context.
