        Forest Tourism and Recreation

        Case Studies in Environmental Management

        by Edited by Dr Xavier Font, John Tribe

        The demand for ecotourism and outdoor recreation is increasing, and the pressures on land use are becoming more obvious. A large part of the experience of ecotourism and recreational landscape depends on the maintenance of forested land. Effective management of tourism and recreation in forests can provide extra income to help offset the costs of sustainable timber production and encourage biodiversity conservation.This multi-author book considers the compatibility between tourism, forestry and conservation, the management of natural resources and the involvement of stakeholders and the community. Issues are presented through case studies from a range of countries and topics covered include National Parks, peri-urban forestry and wilderness management, as well as practitioner-oriented contributions.

        British Business History, 1720–1994

        by J. F. Wilson

        This textbook covers over three centuries of British business history from 1720 to the present day. Wilson argues that company culture has been the most important component in the evolution of business organisations and management practices. The influence of business culture on firms' structure, sources of finance, and the background and training of senior managers are investigated to show its pivotal importance in determining business performance. The book also examines how British business adapted to changing economic, institutional and socio-cultural environments yet failed to develop the kind of managerial hierarchies typified by American and German corporations. Wilson uses an extensive number of case studies to support his conclusions. The book covers the subject chronologically with an extra chapter comparing Britain's experience with the USA, Germany and Japan. ;

        The Elephant Tourism Business

        by Eric Laws, Noel Scott, Xavier Font, John Koldowski

        Elephant tourism is a growing attraction in many countries across Asia and Africa and is popular with tourists from many origins. As elephants are no longer used in the logging industry in Asia, elephant tourism has grown rapidly, providing the only viable way that elephants and their owners can generate income. Old logging camps were developed into sanctuaries for some elephants, but many other camps were established as entertainment centres, with various welfare issues resulting for the elephants and their mahouts. The profits from elephant tourism in Asia have encouraged African operators to follow a similar business model. This book draws attention to the need for a comprehensive and rigorous focus on local solutions to improve the welfare of captive elephants and tourists' experiences of elephant tourism, to the benefit of local communities by: Critically reviewing recent research into elephant tourism Providing contemporary analytical case studies of elephant tourism policy and practice Identifying future research priorities The Elephant Tourism Business will contribute to a better understanding of how elephant tourism is organised, regulated and promoted, both in tourist origin countries and in elephant areas. It identifies priorities for future research into elephant tourism and provides a unique, authoritative resource for researchers, elephant managers and administrators, and tourism managers in this developing area of international concern. The book will be of interest to academics and practitioners with backgrounds in conservation, environment, tourism and veterinary sciences.

        Facing Off

        by Graciela Vaserman Samuels

        Facing Off / Graciela Vaserman Samuels   Facing Off  ist ein Kaleidoskop aus Abschieden. Auf einer jahrhundertelangen Reise flüchten Männer und Frauen in Flammen aus einem Europa an die oft chaotischen, aber einladenden Küsten Argentiniens. Während Gabriela ihren Töchtern das Land ihrer Geburt zeigt, wird die Geschichte des Landes vor ihren Augen lebendig. Die Leser gehen auf eine Reise durch die Zeit und erleben Momente der Geschichte mit den unschuldigen Augen eines Kindes, eines Rebellen und einer reifen Frau. Facing Off  ist gleichzeitig die emotionale Geschichte einer Mutter, die sich in den Reaktionen von Gabrielas Töchtern widerspiegelt. Von Buenos Aires über Jerusalem nach Paris und zurück nach Jerusalem verbinden sich Familie und Tradition zu einem zarten Gewebe. Ein unerschütterlicher Wille führt sie auf ihrer Odyssee durch die Generationen. Facing Off wurde erstmals auf Spanisch veröffentlicht: Al Dar la Cara (Metafora, Buenos Aires, 2010) und ausgewählt für die Präsentation auf dem argentinischen Stand auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2010. Graciela Vaserman Samuels, geboren in Argentinien, wanderte nach Israel aus und studierte Politikwissenschaft an der Hebräischen Universität. Sie hat an der Temple University in Literatur promoviert und war Gründungsdirektorin der Hadassah Medical Relief Association. Als UNESCO-Vertreterin verbringt sie ihre Zeit zwischen Paris und Jerusalem. Die Autorin und ihr Ehemann Shimon Samuels haben drei Töchter und vier Enkel. Vaserman Samuels schrieb auch den Roman Decoding Colors.

        Boo! When My Sister Died

        by Richa Jha and Gautam Benegal

        When Noorie’s sister Zoya dies, everything in Noorie’s world becomes silent. She knows her sister has gone forever. But what’s with Mummy’s silly lies that Zoya will always be around, by their side?  And what is she to do about Zoya’s best friend Dhara, who just won’t leave Noorie alone? Boo! When My Sister Died is a story about finding strength in love and loss. Gautam Benegal blends a playful watercolour and wash-style with a somber digital crosshatch to bring together warmth in the memories of the sisters’ togetherness and the intensity of Noorie’s grief.  Richa Jha’s spare and simple text keeps the story poignant, believable, and full of hope.
