Crop Variety Improvement and its Effect on Productivity

The Impact of International Agricultural Research

by Edited by Robert E Evenson, Douglas Gollin

This volume reports on the productivity impacts of varietal improvement research conducted at a number of international centres affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Such centres have been at the forefront of a 40-year effort to breed new varieties of the world’s staple food crops. The volume is the main product of a study initiated and supported by the Impact Assessment and Evaluation Group (now Standing Panel on Impact Assessment) of the CGIAR. Descriptive data and econometric models are used to evaluate the impact of research on eleven crops and in three country case studies (Brazil, China and India).

        Natural Resource Management in Agriculture

Methods for Assessing Economic and Environmental Impacts

by Edited by Bekele Shiferaw, H A Freeman, Scott M Swinton

In response to increasing concerns about the degradation of natural resources and the sustainability of agriculture, many research programmes have been established in natural resource management (NRM). However, although methods for evaluating the impacts of crop improvement technologies are well developed, there is a dearth of methods for evaluating the impacts of NRM interventions. This is partly due to the complexity of interactions among natural resources, spatial and temporal dimensions of impact, and the valuation of direct and indirect environmental costs and benefits. This book discusses the unique features and methodological difficulties of NRM impact assessment. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of various impact assessment approaches, including econometric, bio-economic, and more direct methods. It also assesses and identifies data requirements for developing impact indicators and recommends suitable methodologies for assessing the impacts of NRM technologies on issues such as soil and water conservation and watershed and biodiversity management.

        Science Under Scarcity

Principles and Practice for Agricultural Research and Priority Setting

by Julian M Alston, George W Norton, Philip G Pardey

Resources for agricultural science are scarce across the world. Yet even as resources are shrinking, agricultural science has expanded its inquiry into many new areas - such as environmental preservation, food quality, and rural development - without forsaking its more traditional concerns. In a time of tight government budgets, research administrators are faced with the need to provide strong evidence that costs are justified by benefits. Science under Scarcity is an invaluable guide to the theory and methods necessary for evaluating research in agriculture and for setting priorities for resource allocation. Although economists have made significant progress in developing more sophisticated methods for research evaluation and priority setting, many research analysts and administrators do not have a working knowledge of those practices. Without the assistance of formal economic analysis it is particularly difficult to assess the social value of new technologies or to make informed judgements about the trade-offs that are involved in allocation decisions. Addressing that knowledge gap, this book reviews, synthesizes, and extends such methods as economic surplus analysis, econometric techniques, mathematical programming procedures, and scoring models. It discusses these practices in the context of scientific policy, describes their conceptual foundations, and explains how to do them.Originally published in 1995 in hardcover by Cornell University Press, it is now reissued in paperback by CAB INTERNATIONAL.

        International Trade in Forest Products

Lumber Trade Disputes, Models and Examples

by G Cornelis van Kooten, Linda Voss

Because of the long-standing Canada-U.S. lumber trade dispute and the current pressure on the world's forests as a renewable energy source, much attention has been directed toward the modelling of international trade in wood products. Two types of trade models are described in this book: one is rooted in economic theory and mathematical programming, and the other consists of two econometric/statistical models--a gravity model rooted in theory and an approach known as GVAR that relies on time series analyses. The purpose of the book is to provide the background theory behind models and facilitate readers in easily constructing their own models to analyse policy questions that they wish to address, whether in forestry or some other sector. Examples in the book are meant to illustrate how models can be used to say something about a variety of issues, including identification of the gains and losses to various players in the North American softwood lumber business, and the potential for redirecting sales of lumber to countries outside the United States. The discussion is expanded to include other products besides lumber, and used to examine, for example, the effects of log export restrictions by one nation on all other forestry jurisdictions, the impacts of climate policies as they relate to the global forest sector, and the impact of oil prices on forest product markets throughout the world. This book will appeal to practising economists and researchers who wish to examine various policies that affect international trade, whether their interest is local or international in scope. Because the book provides the theoretical bases underlying various models, students and practitioners will find this a valuable reference book or supplementary textbook.

Evaluation of Higher Education: an Overview from Latin America

by Daniela Belén Nasif, Héctor R. Gertel, Ana Vianco, Jaime Flórez-Bolaños, Marco Aguilera-Prado, Josu Ahedo Ruiz, Deivi Fernando Ladino Camargo, William Perdomo Rodríguez, César Barona-Ríos, Ofmara Y. Zúñiga-Hernández, Mabel Osnaya Moreno, Milena Hernández-Rodríguez

This work covers a view of higher education evaluation in three parts. In the first part econometric constructions are shown to relate: i) private tutoring to student performance; ii) dropout to financial returns; and iii) education mode to results in specific competencies. The second part includes two justifica- tions to differentiate evaluation of virtual education. The third part examines: i) the relationship between the strengthening of faculty and the improvement of higher education quality; and ii) regulatory and descriptive aspects of dual degree programs, dual program and joint program. The following results are highlighted: i) the weak relationship between tutoring and academic performance; ii) the differences of the financial effect of dropout among programs; iii) the impact of education mode on the development of competencies; iv) the need to include the role of teacher, curricular structures, and the relationship among participants as elements of the evaluation of virtual education; v) the need to revise the objectives of virtual education to align them with evaluation aspects of higher education; vi) the weak relationship between faculty improvement and improvements in other areas of higher education; and vii) the positive effect of dual degree programs for their internationalization.

        Evaluating Military Advertising and Recruiting

        Theory and Methodology

by Paul R. Sackett and Anne S. Mavor, Editors, Committee on the Youth Population and Military Recruitment -- Phase II, National Research Council

It is anticipated that in the coming decade the Department of Defense (DoD) will field and test new advertising and recruiting initiatives designed to improve the recruiting outlook. The DoD needs a comprehensive research and evaluation strategy based on sound research principles that will ensure valid, reliable, and relevant results to discover the most promising policies. The primary objective of this book is to help the DoD improve its research on advertising and recruiting policies. Evaluating Military Advertising and Recruiting: Theory and Methodology presents a framework for evaluation that links different types of research questions to various research methodologies. The framework identifies four major categories of research questions and four broad methodological approaches. The first category of research question asks “What does a target audience see as attractive or unattractive features of a program?†It is well suited to examination via qualitative methods, such as focus groups, unstructured or open-ended surveys, and interviews. The second category of research question asks “What is the effect of a program on specified attitudes or behavioral intentions?†It is well suited to examination via surveys, experiments, and quasi experiments. The third category of research question asks “What is the effect of a proposed new program on enlistment?†It is well suited to examination via experiments and quasi experiments. The final category of research question asks “What is the effect of an existing program on enlistment?†It is well suited to examination via econometric modeling.

        Plantation Coffee in Jamaica 1790-1848

        by Kathleen E.A. Monteith

Plantation Coffee in Jamaica, 1790–1848 is the first comprehensive history of the Jamaican coffee industry, covering a period of rapid expansion and decline. The primary objective is to examine the structure and performance of the industry and to demonstrate the extent to which it contributed to the diversity of the Jamaican economy and society in this period. All of this is examined within the context of a period characterized by significant structural shifts in the then emerging global economy. As a work in economic history, the book is based on solid archival research and econometric analysis. Kathleen E.A. Monteith examines the changing levels of production, trade, productivity, and profitability of the industry and discusses the people involved in the industry, both free and enslaved. A demographic profile of the coffee planters and their familial relationships is established. The work experience of the enslaved men, women and children in the coffee industry, their organization, the nature of their works and their resistance to enslavement are also discussed. The clash of interests between the former enslaved people and coffee planters with respect to labour availability in the industry in the immediate post-slavery period are discussed also. Throughout the book, wherever possible, comparisons are made with other sectors of the Jamaican economy, especially with the sugar industry. Differences are explained in terms of environment, scale and the nature of production. Plantation Coffee in Jamaica, 1790–1848 contributes fresh material and interrogates data in systematic ways not previously undertaken by scholars in this area. Strikingly original are the sections dealing with the backgrounds of the coffee planters, drawing on sources only recently available for exploitation, notably the Legacies of British Slave-Ownership database, family history and genealogical websites, and the sections dealing with profitability. This book compares well with other works in Caribbean history published at this level of scholarship. It has no immediate rivals in its specific field.

        Climate Change and Agriculture

        Causes,Impacts and Interventation

by GSLHV Prasada Rao, VUM Rao & DVS Rao

Natural change in climate is slow and takes millions of years; and it is known to have made our planet hospitable to live. The climate change is not limited to one country or a continent. It is occurring across the globe as evident from droughts in Texas and flooding along the Missouri River in the United States and along the Red River in Canada. Climate change drives many stressors and interacts with many non-climatic stressors which make it difficult to forecast outcomes in any general way other than existing threats to agriculture. Agroforestry increases a high level of diversity within agricultural lands which supports numerous ecological and production services that bring resilience to the impact of climate change mitigation and adaptation. Climate change risk management is difficult in annual cropping systems due to increasing uncertainty of inter-annual variability in rainfall and temperature. Mixing of woody trees with crops, forage and livestock operations provides greater resilience to the inter-annual variability through crop diversification and increased resource use efficiency. Deep rooted trees allow better access to nutrients and water during droughts and when appropriately integrated into annual cropping systems and extract from different resource pools that would otherwise be lost from systems. Agroforestry increases soil porosity, reduces runoff and increases soil cover, which improve water infiltration and reduces moisture stress in low rainfall years. During periods of excessive soil moisture, tree based systems keep soils aerated by pumping out excess water and offer an economic return. The book contains 36 chapters mainly on agroforestry practices found in India and its role in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

        Corporate Fraud Exposed

        A Comprehensive and Holistic Approach

by H. Kent Baker, Lynnette Purda, Samir Saadi

After each major corporate scandal, new suggestions for combatting fraud emerge from regulators and industry professionals. Despite changes to guidelines for firms’ corporate governance, augmented protection for whistle blowers, and enhanced cybersecurity measures, evidence documents an alarming increase in the prevalence and severity of corporate fraud. The rapidly changing laws aimed at curbing corporate fraud sometimes lag behind the changing sophistication of fraud schemes.    Corporate Fraud Exposed discusses the motivations and drivers of fraud including agency theory, executive compensation, and organizational culture. It examines fraud’s consequences for various firm stakeholders and its spillover effects to other corporations, the political environment, and financial market participants, including those who participate via crowdfunding platforms.     This book provides a fresh look at this intriguing but often complex subject. It skillfully blends the contributions of a global array of scholars and practitioners into a single review of some of the most important topics in this area. Given its broad scope, this practical and comprehensive title should be of interest to anyone curious about corporate fraud.

        Twin Flame

        by Nish Amarnath

TWIN FLAME is an inter-racial love story with literary overtones, multicultural stripes and strands of magical realism.   A South Asian Math prodigy’s wish for a boy in a painting to come alive materializes in the form of an Austrian-Jewish writer. But a troubling secret wrenches them apart, forcing them to confront their worst fears, if life is to give them one final chance. Sherry Kasal, diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at the age of five, hopes to draw upon her passion for Math to discover a cure for conditions like her own. She stumbles upon a painting of a boy trapped in a snowstorm. She talks to the boy in this picture whenever she's sad, frustrated, angry and/or dejected. When writer Shaddy Haas enters her life, Sherry is motivated to resume work on a concentric model of electromagnetism that she had abandoned as a teen. Alas, circumstances wrench Sherry and Shaddy apart. Sherry, who reluctantly marries a lawyer, lands in Manhattan, where she scrambles to pick up the vestiges of her shelved research dream and realizes that she’s living a lie. Sherry must also unravel a flabbergasting secret that links Shaddy to the painting of the boy in the snowstorm as they try to find their way back to each other.   Twin Flame, whose narrative is embedded with the alternating voices of its protagonists in both first-person and third-person points of view, combines the mystical ethos of Elif Shafak's 'Forty Rules of Love' with the futuristic cadence of Erich Segal's 'Prizes' and the exotic romanticism of Jan-Philipp Sendker's 'The Art of Hearing Heartbeats.'
