The interviewees are roughly divided into two categories, one is with a family history, the longest being up to 9 generations; the other is a lifelong apprenticeship. They are all handmade and do not rely on large-scale machinery and equipment at all. Among the interviewees, 20 have entered the “intangible cultural heritage” list at the national, provincial, municipal, and district levels, and have a certain social reputation and status, such as Long Jitang, a silverware maker in Xiangxi, and a ceramic smelter in Changsha Tongguan. Liu Zhiguang; The remaining 20 are folk traditional craftsmen, pure craft earners scattered in the streets and lanes, such as the incense maker who follows the traditional manufacturing method and the last knifeman in the river. Among them are the elderly, the middle-aged, and those born in the 1980s who are dedicated to traditional craftsmanship. Some of the projects interviewed have developed prosperously, some have few successors, and some are in jeopardy. The manuscript is recorded with a combination of text and pictures. Chinoiserie

        Commerce and critical ornament in eighteenth-century Britain

        by Stacey Sloboda

        In a critical reassessment of chinoiserie, a style both praised and derided for its triviality, prettiness and ornamental excesses, Stacey Sloboda argues that chinoiserie was no mute participant in eighteenth-century global consumer culture, but was instead a critical commentator on that culture. Analysing ceramics, wallpaper, furniture, garden architecture and other significant examples of British and Chinese design, this book takes an object-focused approach to studying the cultural phenomenon of the 'Chinese taste' in eighteenth-century Britain. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the critical history of design and the decorative arts in the period, and students and scholars of art history, material culture, eighteenth-century studies and British history will find a novel approach to studying the decorative arts and a forceful argument for their critical capacities.

        Crafting design in Italy

        From post-war to postmodernism

        by Catharine Rossi, Christopher Breward, Bill Sherman

        Crafting design in Italy is the first book to examine the role that craft played in post-war Italian design, one of the most celebrated design episodes in the twentieth century. Craft was vital to the development of Italian design, and it has been so far overlooked. This book examines the multiple ways craft shaped Italian design from 1945 to the 1980s in the context of bigger socio-economic, cultural and political change; from post-war reconstruction to the economic 'miracle' of the 1960s, to the rise of the countercultural Radical Design movement and advent of postmodernism. It consists of case studies on design areas including product, furniture, fashion, glass and ceramics to bring to light previously unknown makers and objects as well as re-examine design 'icons' such as Gio Ponti's Superleggera chair and Ettore Sottsass's Memphisware. It also offers a model for analysing design and craft's relationship in other contexts, including today. ;

        The History of Nuclear Power, Revised Edition

        by James A. Mahaffey, Ph.D.

        The discovery and application of nuclear power is one of the most profound scientific accomplishments of the 20th century, beginning with tentative explorations of the structure of matter, expanding into a rapid succession of unexpected discoveries, and finally settling into a seamless transition from theoretical science to applied engineering. There were many changes to nuclear power during this century—science transitioned from an academic pursuit to an industry, the use of uranium changed from an occasional orange or green dye in ceramics to major power-fuel, and public safety concerns shifted from boiler explosions on steamboats to nuclear reactor explosions on continents.  Written in clear and accessible language, The History of Nuclear Power, Revised Edition describes the sequence of these changes, as science and technology rapidly matured more than a hundred years and as the scale of civilization and its energy needs expanded. Providing a fundamental introduction to this complicated subject, this updated, full-color resource is ideal for high school and college students interested in the future through a study of the past.

        Ceramic Fibers and Coatings

        Advanced Materials for the Twenty-First Century

        by Committee on Advanced Fibers for High-Temperature Ceramic Composites, Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems, National Research Council

        High-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. CMCs are also discussed in this report to provide a context for discussing high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings.
