During over 30 years from its establishment till its closure, numerous scientists and engineers, workers and cadres devoted their youth to Gold Silver Beach Base, making great achievements to China’s scientific and technological development. This book makes a legendary history of Gold Silver Beach reappear by combining relevant archives with extensive oral notes of scientific and technical workers who had worked in Gold Silver Beach from different perspectives, which makes it more stereoscopic, comprehensive and vivid.
This book tells the stories of science masters’ efforts and ventures in finding the truth over the past thousands of years and the enlightenment brought about by their achievements to the later generations. For example, the first Greek scientist Thales told us not to believe in everything Roger Bacon said, Newton came up with the idea for the law of gravity by having an apple fall on his head, and in the 20th century, Einstein found that even light can bend. The book includes more than 140 exquisite hand-drawn illustrations, making it fun and interesting for young readers to go through the dialogue with those great scientists.
The tiny shimyshinees is a manifestation of children’s cultural heritage that fuse legend, games, and dance. Its origins are on the Island of Margarita –Venezuela– and thanks to school this piece of oral tradition spread throughout the country. According to the legend, The tiny shimyshinees is form by a group of elves that appear during full moon nights and gather on the beach to sing and play. Their song is so sweet that they can attract fish to the seashore. Over time, The tiny shimyshinees became a kind of theatrical troupe that roamed the streets of towns in popular festivals. Mariana Massarani’s illustrations capture the colors and culture of the Caribbean and give such a local piece an absolutely universal tone. With a naive style and with PVA paint, Massarani makes some colorful and very funny images and gives us perfect settings for the story that takes place: a group of children prepares their presentation on the shore of a crystalline sea and this is how image after image we see the coastal town, the costumes of the characters and part of their Caribbean culture. It is impossible to read this book without wanting to go to the beach!
Where do we go when Nowhere is the only destination left? Kerrybrook is Jana‘s favourite virtual escape. An idyllic fishing village with beautiful nature and, every now and then, a breeze of fresh air from the nearby sea. Jana, is this world‘s designer and person in power, she’s satisfied with her masterpiece. Best job so far. Until one day, a dead body is found, in both, ’Virtual Reality‘ and the real world. In times of climate change, VR is the only safe place for humankind. That‘s why Jana needs to solve the crime, she’s responsible for stopping the destruction. • CliFi Thriller (Climate Fiction): Climate change & virtual reality • For fans of Black Mirror (Netflix) • All age readers • Strong, female protagonist • Highly relevant topic WHITE RAVENS recommendation (2021): "In the not too distant future, the world is an inhospitable place: droughts, storms, floods. That’s why world designers construct »alternative realities«, such as landscapes populated by dinosaurs, life at court in the Middle Ages, and surfing and chilling out on a beach. People can switch between these worlds at will and, when they die there, they are not truly dead; instead, they merely return to the »real world« – same as at night when they sleep. Then they are reunited with their body, which is lying inside a capsule. In »Cryptos«, Ursula Poznanski pulls out all the stops of storytelling: She embeds numerous references to human and intellectual history in an action-packed and extremely suspenseful thriller plot. In the process, she raises central existential and ontological questions that result from the interplay between the real and the virtual worlds. This complex dystopian novel is narrated in such an enjoyable way that readers will hardly notice their brains going into overdrive as they devour it."
This collection brings together scholars from disciplines including Children's Literature, Classics, and History to develop fresh approaches to children's culture and the uses of the past. It charts the significance of historical episodes and characters during the long nineteenth-century (1750-1914), a critical period in children's culture. Boys and girls across social classes often experienced different pasts simultaneously, for purposes of amusement and instruction. The book highlights an active and shifting market in history for children, and reveals how children were actively involved in consuming and repackaging the past: from playing with historically themed toys and games to performing in plays and pageants. Each chapter reconstructs encounters across different media, uncovering the cultural work done by particular pasts and exposing the key role of playfulness in the British historical imagination.
Martha Gellhorn was the doyenne of twentieth century war correspondence. Opinionated, honest and unafraid, she covered conflicts from the Spanish Civil War to Reagan's wars in Central America in the 1980s. Martha Gellhorn: the war writer in the field and in the text is the first critical study of her Second World War fiction and journalism. Often overlooked in accounts of war literature is the writer's precise position in relation to battle and his or her resultant standing in the text. Kate McLoughlin traces Gellhorn's daring attempts to access the war zone and her constructions of the woman war correspondent in her despatches, novels, short stories and play. Drawing on unpublished letters, close attention is given to Gellhorn's rivalry with Ernest Hemingway (the two were married from 1940 to 1945) over reaching the Normandy beaches on D-Day and its textual outcome in the pages of Collier's magazine. McLoughlin goes on to examine Gellhorn's increasingly negative portrayals of the glamorous female war reporter and to suggests why such disillusionment might have set in. ;
