        You’re nicked

        Investigating British television police series

        by Ben Lamb

        You're nicked is the first comprehensive study of television police series in the UK. It reveals how British television's most popular genre has developed stylistically, politically and philosophically from 1955 to the present. Each chapter focuses on a particular decade, investigating how the most-watched series represent the inner workings of the police station, the civilian life of criminals and the private lives of police officers. This new approach unearths the complex ideology underpinning each series and discerns the key insights the genre can provide into the breakdown of the post-war settlement. Offering insightful readings of police series from Dixon of Dock Green to Happy Valley via The Sweeney, The Bill and Cracker, the book is a must-read for crime-drama enthusiasts worldwide. This new paperback edition features an extensive epilogue on Line of Duty and other Jed Mercurio creations.

        Fernblick: Wie wir uns die Zukunft erzählen

        by Dirk Peitz

        Die Zukunft können wir nicht vorhersehen. Wer glaubt, bereits darin zu leben, wie so mancher im Silicon Valley, muss sich umstellen, denn die Zukunftsmacht China schickt sich an, die Deutungshoheit zu übernehmen. Was also können wir heute über das Bevorstehende sagen? Haben wir Anlass, uns zu freuen? Müssen wir uns fürchten? Der Zeit-Autor und Technologie-Experte Dirk Peitz reiste durch die USA, der alten Zukunft entgegen, bis nach Shenzhen, in die neue Silicon City des Ostens. Auf dem Weg sprach er mit denen, die jetzt schon an der Welt von morgen arbeiten: mit Stanford-Professoren, Think-Tank-Wissenschaftlern, Tech-Arbeitern, Managern, Städteplanern und Träumern. Das Ergebnis ist ein Reisebericht aus der Gegenwart und Vergangenheit des Vorstellbaren. Ein faszinierender Ausblick auf das Morgen. Sowie eine kluge, fundierte Auseinandersetzung mit den drängenden Fragen von heute.

        East German intelligence and Ireland, 1949–90

        Espionage, terrorism and diplomacy

        by Jerome de Wiel

        This book is an in-depth examination of the relations between Ireland and the former East Germany between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It explores political, diplomatic, economic, media and cultural issues. The long and tortuous process of establishing diplomatic relations is unique in the annals of diplomatic history. Central in this study are the activities of the Stasi. They show how and where East German intelligence obtained information on Ireland and Northern Ireland and also what kind of information was gathered. A particularly interesting aspect of the book is the monitoring of the activities of the Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army and their campaigns against the British army in West Germany. The Stasi had infiltrated West German security services and knew about Irish suspects and their contacts with West German terrorist groups. East German Intelligence and Ireland, 1949-90 makes an original contribution to diplomatic, intelligence, terrorist and Cold War studies. ;
