        Islam and identity politics among British-Bangladeshis

        A leap of faith

        by Ali Riaz

        This book probes the causes of and conditions for the preference of the members of the British-Bangladeshi community for a religion-based identity vis-à-vis ethnicity-based identity, and the influence of Islamists in shaping the discourse. The first book-length study to examine identity politics among the Bangladeshi diaspora delves into the micro-level dynamics, the internal and external factors and the role of the state and locates these within the broad framework of Muslim identity and Islamism, citizenship and the future of multiculturalism in Europe. Empirically grounded but enriched with in-depth analysis, and written in an accessible language this study is an invaluable reference for academics, policy makers and community activists. Students and researchers of British politics, ethnic/migration/diaspora studies, cultural studies, and political Islam will find the book extremely useful. ;

        Among the Sheep

        by Oleksandr Koreshkov

        Something has clicked in the world order, and you have a chance to look at things around us from a different angle. What is: "fear of being human"? What is it like to "see wrongdoing and remain silent"? When do we turn into our executioners? You avoid such difficult questions to the last. Maybe it would be better to use the example of one dog that lives in a world of total fear, lies and greed? Lives like a sheep among sheep...

        Among Fellow Primates

        Views of a monkey researcher

        by Volker Sommer

        Man brings apocalyptic plagues to the world and his fellow primates – from global warming to the destruction of forests. While millions of monkeys and apes lived on Earth only a few decades ago, today many species are strongly endangered. In this book the anthropologist and monkey researcher Volker Sommer calls on us to finally protect the fundamental rights such as the right to life, freedom and physical integrity of the great apes. For all his seriousness, Sommer is also a great storyteller who deals with his own profession with humour, sympathy and in a highly instructive way.

        Hamlet

        by William Shakespeare

        Hamlet is Shakespeare's longest play, and is considered among the most powerful and influential works of world literature, with a story capable of "seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others". The play likely was one of Shakespeare's most popular works during his lifetime, and still ranks among his most performed, topping the performance list of the Royal Shakespeare Company and its predecessors in Stratford-upon-Avon since 1879. It has inspired many other writers—from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Charles Dickens to James Joyce and Iris Murdoch—and has been described as "the world's most filmed story after Cinderella"

        by Joseph deVries. Edited by Gary Toenniessen

        Improved food security, led by increased productivity among Africa’s many small-scale farmers, has been the aim of significant national and international effort in recent decades. This book grew out of a two-year exploration conducted by the food security theme of The Rockefeller Foundation focusing on the potential for crop genetic improvement to contribute to food security among rural populations in Africa. It provides a critical assessment of the ways in which recent breakthroughs in biotechnology, participatory plant breeding, and seed systems can be broadly employed in developing and delivering more productive crop varieties in Africa’s diverse agricultural environments.

        Race and representation

        Electoral politics and ethnic pluralism in Britain

        by Shamit Saggar

        The central concern of Race and representation is the political integration of Britain's ethnic minorities. The book provides a direct and extensive comparison between the voting behaviour of ethnic minorities and the electorate as a whole. Newly available in paperback, the book pioneers innovative use of the British Election Study and features the results of the 1997 ethnic minority election study. It also contains an in-depth look at party strategy with regard to ethnic minorities, ethnic minority attitudes on key issues and policies, and the lessons to be learned from the performance of black and Asian parliamentary candidates. In particular, the analysis aims to uncover whether electoral abstention, orientation towards issues and party alignment are primarily circumstantial, as existing research suggests is the case among the white population. It is a major re-examination of the role of ethnicity in shaping political outlook and voting choice. The book will be essential reading for students, teachers and scholars interested in the involvement of Britain's ethnic minorities in the democratic process. It will also have extensive appeal among activists, policy-makers and opinion formers concerned with ethnic diversity, race relations and political inclusion.
