I Dream of Being a Concrete Mixer

        by Hussain Al Mutawaa

An uplifting tale about the power of friendship, finding your place in the world, and realising your dreams while remaining true to who you are. Tumbledown is a little demolition truck growing up in a loving family. His parents go to work every day demolishing buildings with their big wrecking balls. But soft-hearted Tumbledown doesn’t like to destroy. He’d rather build things. He dreams of being a cement mixer. When Tumbledown cries, his wrecking ball swings out and destroys everything it touches. When Tumbledown laughs, his wrecking ball swings out and destroys everything it touches. His soft heart can’t skip a beat without leaving a trail of destruction. At school other students laugh at him, but still he won’t let go of his dream. When Tumbledown makes friends with a feisty troop of metal springs, they hatch a plan to save him from himself. They fan out over his wrecking ball and every time it swings they do their best to absorb the shock. The day comes when the worn-out springs turn to the Wise Old Crane for help. Tumbledown can never be a cement mixer, but maybe there are other ways, better suited to his nature. After some search, the Wise Old Crane finds a new job for Tumbledown at a construction site using his wrecking ball to smooth out the cement on the ground. It’s hard work but Tumbledown is finally happy, and he grows stronger and more skillful with every passing day.

        Natural Resource Management in Agriculture

Methods for Assessing Economic and Environmental Impacts

by Edited by Bekele Shiferaw, H A Freeman, Scott M Swinton

In response to increasing concerns about the degradation of natural resources and the sustainability of agriculture, many research programmes have been established in natural resource management (NRM). However, although methods for evaluating the impacts of crop improvement technologies are well developed, there is a dearth of methods for evaluating the impacts of NRM interventions. This is partly due to the complexity of interactions among natural resources, spatial and temporal dimensions of impact, and the valuation of direct and indirect environmental costs and benefits. This book discusses the unique features and methodological difficulties of NRM impact assessment. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of various impact assessment approaches, including econometric, bio-economic, and more direct methods. It also assesses and identifies data requirements for developing impact indicators and recommends suitable methodologies for assessing the impacts of NRM technologies on issues such as soil and water conservation and watershed and biodiversity management.

        A Partir de Rien

        by Ron Adam

Advances in Fig Research and Sustainable Production

by Moshe A Flaishman, Uygun Aksoy

The common fig (Ficus carica L.) is one of the oldest fruits domesticated by humans, and is native to southwest Asia and the Mediterranean. Figs have been associated with health and prosperity since ancient times. They are rich in fibre, potassium, calcium, and iron, as well as being an important source of vitamins, amino acids, and antioxidants. In recent years, increased consumption has caused fig production to shift to new countries such as Mexico, Brazil, India, and China. However, fig is a challenging fruit crop to grow. It is susceptible to insect pests and diseases as well as injuries from abiotic stress during fruit development and ripening. As a delicate fruit it also requires complicated postharvest procedures and climate change presents additional challenges. Comprising 29 chapters written by international experts, the book includes sections on: History Biology and Orchard Management Fruit Ripening and Postharvest Management Pests and Diseases Omics Analysis Cultivars and Breeding Products and Trade. This volume serves as a comprehensive reference for current and future practices of fig production, consumption, research and innovation, and is essential for academic researchers, and those involved in research and development in the fig industry.

Community-Based Water Law and Water Resource Management Reform in Developing Countries

by B van Koppen, Mark Giordano. Edited by J Butterworth.

The lack of sufficient access to clean water is a common problem faced by communities, efforts to alleviate poverty and gender inequality and improve economic growth in developing countries. While reforms have been implemented to manage water resources, these have taken little notice of how people use and manage their water and have had limited effect at the ground level. On the other hand, regulations developed within communities are livelihood-oriented and provide incentives for collective action but they can also be hierarchal, enforcing power and gender inequalities. This book shows how bringing together the strengths of community-based laws rooted in user participation and the formalized legal systems of the public sector, water management regimes will be more able to reach their goals.

This book chronicles Julián's journey to his role as a juvenile defender in the province of Buenos Aires, from which they sought to oust him through harassment and political trials. Dictionary of Natural Resource Management

        by Julian Dunster, Katherine Dunster

The field of natural resource management is expanding, attracting individuals and ideas from a wide array of disciplines. For effective communication to take place, it is increasingly important for everyone involved to be familiar with the exact meanings being attached to the terms in use. The Dictionary of Natural Resource Management has been compiled to address this need and provides a single source of definitions about natural resource management terms. With more than 6,000 entries, many of them illustrated and a detailed set of appendices covering the classification of organisms, geological time scales and conversion factors, it is the most up-to-date and comprehensive reference work of its kind available. The scope of the dictionary is interdisciplinary. It encompasses terminology from the traditional fields of forestry, silviculture, pest management, mycology, botany, fish and wildlife management, forest fire control, geology, pedology, engineering and resource planning. In addition, there are many terms from the emerging disciplines of landscape ecology, conservation biology, conflict resolution and sustainable development planning. Clear definitions, along with the multiple meanings that some terms now have, are provided for each entry. These have been derived from the authors’ extensive review of contemporary literature and glossaries and from discussions with experts around the world. In order to make the dictionary accessible to a wide audience — interested lay people as well as those with a technical background — the terms and illustrations are cross-referenced so that opposite and allied terms can be easily located. By enabling readers to better understand and effectively use technical terms, The Dictionary of Natural Resource Management is an essential reference work for resource managers, planners and decision makers in government and non-government evironmental organisations. The Dictionary is also an invaluable resource for all students studying biology, environmental sciences, forestry, geography, geology and wildlife management. It is particularly appropriate for those students undetaking interdisciplinary courses or who realise the benefit of reading around their chosen area of study. The most current and comprehensive source of natural resource management terms available. A unique, authoritative work with more than 6,000 entries, thousands of cross-references and 80 illustrations. An essential reference tool for those in the many interdisciplinary fields of natural resource management. Will enable readers to better understand and more effectively use technical words.
