Die Gegner dieses Stücks mögen selber geglaubt haben, sie kämpften gegen ein Stück, in dem die Prostitution verteidigt wird. In Wirklichkeit haben sie gegen ein Stück gekämpft, in dem die Prostitution erklärt wird; erklärt als ein Beruf, in dem die Ausbeutung der Frau deutlich wird. Mögen sie geglaubt haben, Sitte und Anstand gegen dieses Stück in Schutz nehmen zu müssen, sie haben in Wirklichkeit reagiert auf die Darstellung eines Geschäfts«, schrieb Martin Walser anlässlich seiner Neuübersetzung des Stücks.
