Postwar Black British Writing

Explores some of the key venues of black British literary and cultural production across the postwar period: bedsits and basements; streets and cafes; train stations and tourist landscapes; the suburbs and the city; the north and south. Pursues a 'devolving' landscape in order to consider what an analysis of 'dwelling' might contribute to the travelling theories of diaspora discourse and asks what happens when we 'situate' literatures of movement and migration. Offers fresh readings of work by some of the key literary figures of the postwar years, for example, Salman Rushdie, Hanif Kureishi, Meera Syal, Linton Kwesi Johnson. Contextualises writings alongside photography, painting, and film to consider their relationship to broader shifts in the politics of black representation over the past fifty years. Offers sustained anaysis of many of the texts reproduced in Procter's anthology Writing black Britain 1948-98 ( MUP, 2000) making an ideal companion to the earlier book. ;

The main character is a conscript named Qasem, who lives with his younger brother and his mother, Masoumeh. To prevent his mother's impending trip with Ismail to move drugs, Qasem requests a leave of absence from Colonel Ghafoor. The colonel objects for no apparent reason and Qasem's excessive insistence leads to a conflict with the colonel. After wounding another soldier, Qasem runs away and hides at an abandoned gas station in the south of Tehran where Kobra, her young son, and Ibish live. Kobra is an addicted dealer and Ibish, suffering from all kinds of delusions as a result of consuming meth, clutches at straws to force his wife to live with him again. Later on, Maget joins them, a professional thief seeking revenge on his mistress who has married another man in his absence. Looking for a way to save his family from misery, Qasem, a now-wanted, unintentionally joins these miserable refugees and gets involved in their strange adventures, not knowing that his case has become a political and security case...

For those purposes, he will have to get involved in the foundation of the city and at the same time confront, with the help of those who should have been his natural enemies, a number of intriguing characters who should have been his allies all through an extraordinary plot full of magic, innocence and adventures. La sorprendente novela en la que la vida de nuestro entrañable protagonista Omar se entreteje con la de cerca de un centenar de personajes reales de los siglos IX y anteriores, y con la Historia de Murcia, su huerta y el resto de la antigua cora de Tudmir (Región de Murcia, Alicante, y parte de Almería y Albacete), y la del resto de al Andalus.
