Innovative Scaling up with Soil Nutrients

The livelihoods of millions of people in developing countries, which depend on dryland agriculture to ensure their food security and their well-being, could be improved measurably by gains in agricultural crop yields. This book describes lessons learnt from an innovative scheme in India that improved crop yields in drylands. It shows how the scheme can be scaled up for other dryland regions of the world. The scheme uses localized soil nutrient analyses to create an integrated, climate smart fertilizer and planting plan that maximises yields for farmers. This book describes how a partnership between a global scientific organization (such as International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, ICRISAT) and state and non-state actors can provide a route to equitable growth, specifically for small and marginal farmers, and how this approach can be replicated worldwide to enhance rural livelihoods. Phosphorus is an essential element for plant growth and its input has long been recognised as necessary to maintain profitable crop production. However, phosphorus inputs can also increase the biological activity of surface waters and this can lead to the destruction of such aquatic ecosystems. Advanced eutrophication of surface water leads to problems with its use for fisheries, recreation, industry and drinking, due to the increased growth of undesirable algae and aquatic weeds, and oxygen shortages caused by their death and decomposition. It is therefore important to have a good understanding of the causes and mode of phosphorus loss from soil to water, to enable the problems to be controlled and managed. This book has been developed from an international workshop held in Ireland in late 1995. It is the first comprehensive consideration of the topic, and many leading researchers in the area have contributed to it. Howard Phillips Lovecraft wurde am 20. August 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island geboren und starb am 15. März 1937 ebenda. Im Alter von acht Jahren verlor er seinen Vater. Er wurde fortan hauptsächlich von seiner Mutter, seinem Großvater und zwei Tanten aufgezogen und zeigte bereits früh literarische Begabung. Als Kleinkind lernte er Gedichte auswendig und begann im Alter von sechs Jahren, eigene Gedichte zu schreiben. Sein Großvater unterstützte diese Neigung und erzählte ihm selbsterfundene Horrorgeschichten. 1914 wurde Lovecraft Mitglied einer Vereinigung von amerikanischen Hobbyautoren, deren Ziel es war, durch Kongresse den Austausch unter den Autoren zu fördern. Dieser Austausch mit Gleichgesinnten verlieh Lovecraft neuen Schwung: Die Kurzgeschichten The Tomb und Dagon erstanden in dieser Zeit. 1924 heiratete Lovecraft die sieben Jahre ältere jüdische Ukrainerin Sonia Greene. Einige Jahre später einigten sich die getrennt lebenden Sonia Greene und Lovecraft auf eine einvernehmliche Scheidung, die jedoch nie rechtswirksam vollzogen wurde. Lovecraft kehrte zurück nach Providence und lebte dort wieder mit seinen Tanten. Dieser letzte Abschnitt seines Lebens war der produktivste. Nahezu sämtliche seiner bekannten Erzählungen, wie Der Fall Charles Dexter Ward oder Berge des Wahnsinns stammen aus dieser Zeit. 1936 wurde bei Lovecraft Darmkrebs diagnostiziert. Bis zu seinem Tode ein Jahr später litt er an ständigen Schmerzen und Unterernährung. Rudolf Hermstein, geboren 1940 in Juliusburg in Niederschlesien, ist seit 1971 als freier Übersetzer aus dem Englischen tätig. Er lebt im oberbayerischen Bad Feilnbach.

This report reviews the energy and protein requirement systems for dairy cows currently used in Britain and presents a new approach, along with the outline of a model for its implementation. Current systems give little consideration to the responses of the animal to changes in the nutrient supply, or to interactions between dietary constituents in their effects on digestion and metabolism. Neither do they predict any effect on the partition of nutrient use between milk and body, or changes in the yields of milk fat, protein and lactose, which determine the commercial value of the milk. Therefore the systems, although not inaccurate, lack relevance to the current needs of UK milk producers. Models which embody concepts of nutrient supply and utilization are reviewed and their development as viable alternatives is considered. It is concluded that a new diet formulation system for dairy cows should aim to predict voluntary feed intake, the partition of nutrient use between milk production and tissue deposition, and the short and long-term of effects of nutrition on fat, protein and lactose yields. The physical and biological characteristics of the cow must also be recognized and incorporated into any model for response prediction. The report is also published in Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews - Series B: Livestock Feeds and Feeding. It is an authoritative review for advanced students, research workers and advisors in animal nutrition and in dairy science and technology.

Er wußte, daß sie für ihn von höchster Bedeutung gewesen sein mußte; doch in welchem Zyklus oder welcher Inkarnation er sie gekannt hatte und ob im Traum oder im Wachen, konnte er nicht sagen.« Durch ein Land des Horrors macht sich Randolph Carter auf die Suche nach dem unbekannten Kadath, neben der goldenen, marmornen Stadt seine zweite Vision und Obsession. Finstere Götter, gefährliche Geschöpfe, Piraten, bedrohliche Natur werden zum Hindernis bei seiner Suche. Aber er findet den Kadath, er besteigt ihn, steigt hinauf bis ins Turmzimmer der aus Onyx gebauten Festung. Aber Kadath lag im Dunkeln. Seine Gebieter waren fort. Wohin waren sie gegangen?

It explains the science underlying the productive processes of growth, reproduction and incubation. The applications of nutrition and breeding techniques are described. The book covers all the commercially important poultry species, including turkeys, quail, guinea fowls, ducks and geese, but the main emphasis is on the domestic fowl. The overall purpose is to provide the student with an understanding of the characteristics and physiological responses of domesticated poultry, with particular reference to production. The emphasis is on modelling responses rather than on biochemical and hormonal processes. The author stresses basic concepts and models, rather than practical production systems, so that the book should have worldwide applicability. The book represents a key text for degree and advanced diploma courses in agriculture.

Nach und nach, durch Stöbern in der berühmten Miskatonic-Bibliothek, durch Wälzen von im Giftschrank verschlossenen Bänden uralten okkulten Wissens, kommt es zu einem allmählichen Eindringen in Geheimnisse, die besser verborgen geblieben wären. Es häufen sich bedrohliche Vorzeichen, und es wird klar, daß sich auf dem Besitztum der Billingtons einer jener Knotenpunkte befindet, wo die entsetzlichen Alten Götter auf der Lauer liegen, um in unsere Welt einzudringen und sie in Besitz zu nehmen.
