        God's only daughter

        Spenser's Una as the invisible Church

        by J. B. Lethbridge, Kathryn Walls

        In this study, Kathryn Walls challenges the standard identification of Una with the post-Reformation English Church, arguing that she is, rather, Augustine's City of God - the invisible Church, whose membership is known only to God. Una's story (its Tudor resonances notwithstanding) therefore embraces that of the Synagogue before the Incarnation as well as that of the Church in the time of Christ and thereafter. It also allegorises the redemptive process that sustains the true Church. Una is fallible in canto I. Subsequently, however, she comes to embody divine perfection. Her transformation depends upon the intervention of the lion as Christ. Convinced of the consistency and coherence of Spenser's allegory, Walls offers fresh interpretations of Abessa (as Synagoga), of the fauns and satyrs (the Gentiles), and of Una's dwarf (adiaphoric forms of worship). She also reinterprets Spenser's marriage metaphor, clarifying the significance of Red Cross as Una's spouse in the final canto.

        The life of Una Marson, 1905–65

        by Delia Jarrett-Macauley

        This is an original, full length biography of Britain's first twentieth-century black feminist - Una Marson - poet, playwright, and social activist and BBC broadcaster. Una Marson is recognised today as the first major woman poet of the Caribbean and as a significant forerunner of contemporary black writers; her story throws light on the problems facing politicised black artists. In challenging definitions of 'race' and 'gender' in her political and creative work, she forged a valiant path for later black feminists. Her enormous social and cultural contributions to the Caribbean and Britain have, until now, remained hidden in archives and memoirs around the world. Based on extensive research and oral testimony, this biography embraces postcolonial realities and promise, and is a major contribution to British cultural history. ;

        Identidad perdida – Una novela dramática

        by Hadassa Ashdot

        Identidad perdida – Una novela dramática  por Hadassa Ashdot Identidad perdida es una novela conmovedora que cuenta la historia de tres generaciones de hombres y mujeres. A través de los ojos y los relatos de cada uno, una trama escalofriante se desarrolla por diferentes espacios de tiempos, en Israel y en el extranjero. ?Pero sobre quién es esta historia? ?Es acaso sobre el héroe israelí, el agente secreto bajo tapadera diplomática, cuya vida gira en torno a la encrucijada entre una operación de "capa y puñal" o entre cualquier otra misión, siempre ‘en el nombre de’, siempre por la causa? ?O es acaso sobre una mujer, la que brinda la vida, quien vive bajo la sombra de los hombres de su vida: su padre, marido, hijo, amigos y amantes? En el aniversario del fallecimiento de su hijo Uri, un piloto de combate que perdió su vida en una de la muchas batallas de Israel, Marit, se queda sola después de que los invitados se van, reconsidera su vida y las personas significativas que toman parte en ella: Hanoch, su marido oficial de inteligencia, incapaz de enfrentar la perdida de su hijo, la ha abandonado; y Uri, el hijo fallecido, que fue acostado y atado a un altar de sacrificio, como padres israelíes inspirados por el sentido de la causa y el heroísmo, sacrifican a sus hijos por la patria. A causa de que Marit conoce personalmente la muerte y el luto, en el encuentro colectivo, transmite oscuridad, una realidad israelí heroica de amor y muerte – Eros y Thánatos. Esta es una historia de amor: el apasionado amor entre un hombre y una mujer; el amor a un país que causa muerte; el amor afectuoso de los padres por su hijo, que resulta ser un amor que lo mata y a ellos también. Es también una historia sobre la muerte, y el fracaso de ese amor desesperado. Psicóloga y profesora de universidad Hadassa Ashdot nació en Tel Aviv y creció en Jerusalén. Sus cuentos cortos han aparecido en dos revistas literarias destacadas, Moznayim y Prosa. Hasta la fecha, Ashdot ha publicado dos novelas (en hebreo): Identidad perdida y Marianne de la nieve. La experiencia de la autora como psicóloga del ejercito que enfrenta el luto a causa de las guerras y problemas asociados con traumas a causa de neurosis de guerra, son reflejados claramente en sus trabajos de ficción.

        Una cabeza distinta (A different head)

        by Luis Panini, Chiara Carrer

        This child tells us that he is not happy with the head that he has. He thinks it is a wrong head. The parents, after listening to him, take him to a specialist, who agrees with the little one. A mysterious man dressed in black supplies him with heads in exchange for his own. The child tries several, until he finds the one he was looking for. A reindeer head, a crocodile head, a whisk head: the narrator child and protagonist of this story tells us about his disagreement with the head he has and the vicissitudes that he has to go through to find the head with which he will finally agree: the head of a grown man, of a mathematician. This is a story of search for identity and growth, developed with fine fantasy and humor, with the wisdom of someone he has sought and perhaps already found.

        Una Storia Vera

        Ein Kinderalbum in Versen

        by Durs Grünbein

        »Willkommen an Bord Däumling du, Menschlein, brandneu. / Zierliche Nymphe, zitternd wie Espenlaub, Milchtrinker, Wicht. / Alles dank dir, Glückskind, beginnt nun, gut griechisch, mit Eu .../ Wie sie Dich halten, Krabbenfang, ängstlich, daß nichts zerbricht«, begrüßt der gerade Vater gewordene Dichter die Tochter, wohl wissend um die eigene Vernarrtheit, die anderen womöglich fragwürdig ist. Aber was liegt näher, als sich dem Ansturm der Erwartungen, den Gebärden und dem Geschrei des Neugeborenen ganz hinzugeben? – Die Gedichte dieses Bandes, »wie von selbst entstanden und halb belustigt, halb verwundert aufgezeichnet, halten die Momente fest, in denen ein Kind zum ersten Mal ... zumeist noch unbewußt, sich einübt ins Leben«. Movens des Schreibens dieser Verse war für Grünbein die Neugier auf etwas, was der Selbsterfahrung unzugänglich bleibt: Niemandes Erinnerung reicht zurück in die ersten zwanzig Monate des eigenen Lebens, und so sah er sich bei der Betrachtung der Tochter immer auch sich selbst gegenüber, mehr noch, er blickte ins Innere der Lebensuhr.

        Corruption in contemporary politics

        A new travel guide

        by James L. Newell

        Recognising that corruption is a serious problem in the globalised world of the early twenty-first century, the book takes the reader on a journey - beginning with what corruption is, why its study is important and how it can be measured. From there it moves on to explore corruption's causes, its consequences and how it can be tackled - before discovering how these things are playing out in the established liberal democracies, in the former communist regimes and in the newly industrialised and 'developing' world. On the way it takes a couple of detours - first, to explore corruption's mechanisms and dynamics and second to survey the scandals to which it may give rise. The book is therefore offered as an informative 'travel guide' of potential interest to journalists and policy makers as well as to students and academics.

        UNA JUDÍA NACIDA COMUNISTA

        by Jeana Altbuch

        UNA JUDÍA NACIDA COMUNISTA - Viaje a un pasado siempre presente por Jeana Altbuch Jeana Altbuch (en el libro, Marina Breitmann), judía de nacimiento y por elección y comunista por una serie de circunstancias, salió a la luz del mundo en la Rumanía de posguerra.  Más o menos en la misma época, el comunismo, entre cuyos fundadores en su país se contaba su padre, se convirtió en la fuerza política dominante e incorporó a su familia a la Nomenklatura, la élite de la época. La protagonista describe su feliz niñez en una burbuja protectora, pero también su espectacular caída cuando el régimen la rechaza y la burbuja revienta. Su padre era una persona demasiado honrada para la ciénaga ideológica comunista y en consecuencia, fue sometido a juicio con  efectos perdurables. Como resultado de ello y en un intento de encontrar refugio, Altbuch cruzó Europa y llegó a Francia, donde comenzó su difícil y decepcionante experiencia de aprendizaje. Se trata de una historia verdaderamente pintoresca, salpicada de versátiles aventuras, felices o tristes, pero siempre apasionantes y conmovedoras. Jeana Altbuch nos presenta un relato que nos lleva a través de un continente, entre el comunismo y otros “ismos”, mientras que su identidad judía es un ancla permanente en su vida. Este libro no sólo enseña sobre las cosas de la vida, sino que es también una conmovedora lección de historia contemporánea. Jeana Albuch nació en 1946 en Bucarest, Rumanía y en 1966 llegó a Francia para tramitar allí su matrimonio. Dado que no logró obtener en Francia el reconocimiento de sus estudios de lenguas en un país comunista, trabajó durante un tiempo en una florería regenteada por una familia.  Después del nacimiento de su segundo hijo en 1978, UNESCO validó finalmente los certificados y títulos de países de Europa Oriental y pudo invertir sus energías en un área de trabajo más afín a sus capacidades e inclinaciones.  Comenzó a trabajar como maestra y más tarde como directora educativa.  Esos fueron los años más felices de su vida profesional, que prolongó trabajando como Asesora de gestión europea para recursos humanos.

        Die Schwierigkeit, Kunst zu machen – Antriebe ihrer Vergesellschaftung

        Eine theoretische und empirische Untersuchung mit jungen Künstlern über ihr Selbstverständnis und über die Bedingungen ihrer Tätigkeit in der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft

        by Hermann Pfütze, Olav Münzberg, Una Pfau, Heinrich Kutzner, Lorenz Wilkens

        Diese Untersuchung des gesellschaftlichen Selbstverständnisses der gegenwärtigen Kunst und der Bedingungen künstlerischer Produktion in der spätkapitalistischen Industriegesellschaft, die an der Basis einsetzt, bei der Produktivkraft des Künstlers selbst, zielt sowohl auf Erkenntnis wie auf Veränderung des gegenwärtigen Zustandes. Sie geht davon aus, daß materialistische Kunsttheorie auch unter den heute gegebenen Bedingungen nicht aus einer Distanz heraus betrieben werden kann, die die Produzenten zu Objekten der Theorie und des Kunstbetriebes macht. Erst eine Methode der Untersuchung, die, der Form einer Diskussion angenähert, es den Künstlern möglich macht, sich als subjektiv gewendete Materie im widersprüchlichen Gesellschaftsprozeß selbst zu erfahren, emanzipiert sie von ihrer Objektrolle, an der sie vereinzelt und schweigend zugrunde zu gehen drohen. Fünf junge Sozialwissenschaftler haben in den letzten Jahren 130 junge Berliner Künstler und Kunststudenten – Maler, Bildhauer, Schauspieler, Musiker, Sänger, Filmer – in langen und intensiven Diskussionsinterviews danach gefragt, wie sie ihre Position und Rolle in der Gesellschaft sehen, wie sie produzieren und sich reproduzieren. Die Ergebnisse dieser Interviews werden in qualitativen Inhaltsanalysen vorgestellt. In ihrem theoretischen Teil geht die Arbeit auf aktuelle Fragen der künstlerischen Produktion und des Gesellschaftsbildes von künstlerisch Tätigen ein.

        Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada

        by Dominic Moran, Catherine Davies

        Pablo Neruda's Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (1924) is the most widely read and best loved book of poetry ever written in Spanish. Its verses can be recited by heart by millions of Latin Americans from every background and walk of life, and it has become almost a bible for young lovers. Yet despite, or perhaps because of this immense popular success, it has received scant attention from scholars, often being studied out of context and in relatively superficial fashion. This new critical edition - the first to include critical notes in English - argues that the book constitutes a critical juncture in the young Neruda's development as a poet, and that the poems are as much painstakingly wrought experiments in style, language and form as they are outpourings of youthful passion. A detailed introduction in English demonstrates that the Viente poemas represent the culmination of complex and sometimes fraught poetic apprenticeship, significant traces of which can be found in the poems themselves. This is followed by a series of commentaries which offer close readings of all twenty-one poems, an extensive bibliography, a selected vocabulary, and a list of key rhetorical and metrical terms. ;
