J. M. W. Turner
The making of a modern artist
by Sam Smiles, Alan Rutter
Alone of his contemporaries, J.M.W. Turner is commonly held to have prefigured modern painting, as signalled in the existence of The Turner Prize for contemporary art. Our celebration of his achievement is very different to what Victorian critics made of his art. This book shows how Turner was reinvented to become the artist we recognise today. On Turner's death in 1851 he was already known as an adventurous, even baffling, painter. But when the Court of Chancery decreed that the contents of his studio should be given to the nation, another side of his art was revealed that effected a wholescale change in his reputation. This book acts as a guide to the reactions of art writers and curators from the 1850s to the 1960s as they attempted to come to terms with his work. It documents how Turner was interpreted and how his work was displayed in Britain, in Europe and in North America, concentrating on the ways in which his artistic identity was manipulated by art writers, by curators at the Tate and by designers of exhibitions for the British Council and other bodies. ;

The lives of Thomas Becket
by Michael Staunton
This collection tells the story of Thomas Becket's turbulent life, violent death and extraordinary posthumous acclaim in the words of his contemporaries. The only modern collection from the twelfth-century Lives of Thomas Becket in English and features all his major biographers, including many previously untranslated extracts. Providing both a valuable glimpse of the late twelfth-century world, and an insight into the minds of those who witnessed the events. By using contemporary sources, this book is the most accessible way to study this central episode in medieval history. Thomas Becket features prominently in most medieval core courses. This book allows the subject to be taught as never before, and is highly suitable as a set text.

Thomas Nashe and literary performance
by Chloe Kathleen Preedy, Rachel Willie
As an instigator of debate and a defender of tradition, a man of letters and a popular hack, a writer of erotica and a spokesman for bishops, an urbane metropolitan and a celebrant of local custom, the various textual performances of Thomas Nashe have elicited, and continue to provoke, a range of contradictory reactions. Nashe's often incongruous authorial characteristics suggest that, as a 'King of Pages', he not only courted controversy but also deliberately cultivated a variety of public personae, acquiring a reputation more slippery than the herrings he celebrated in print. Collectively, the essays in this book illustrate how Nashe excelled at textual performance but his personae became a contested site as readers actively participated and engaged in the reception of Nashe's public image and his works.

Der Briefwechsel Thomas Bernhard/Siegfried Unseld
by Thomas Bernhard, Siegfried Unseld, Raimund Siegfried, Martin Huber, Julia Ketterer

Simple Food!
Anti the Food Frenzy in Our Minds
by Thomas A. Vilgis
This book follows a unique path in the ubiquitous food debate: it leads us on the trail of the origins of our food culture, from the Neolithic period to the present day. Thomas A. Vilgis has compiled a guide that combines scientific with cultural or sociological aspects. How did Stone Age man poach food? Which cereal varieties were cultivated first? What is the mysterious umami flavour all about? The cultural historical excursion gets interactive with plenty of recipes for those curious to test Kimchi with birch leaves or red cabbage in their dessert.

Ein Leben an der Seite von Thomas Bernhard
Ein Rapport
by Peter Fabjan
