Searching for the Left in a fragmented world

Through the lens of performance and politics, this collection zooms in on the context-specific dimensions, analogies, and micro-histories of the Left to better understand the larger picture. It proposes a search for the Left not from totalising Leftist ideological positions and partisan politics but from ethical dimensions through smaller-scale Left-leaning struggles; not from the political to the aesthetic, but from the potentiality of art to offer new political imagination and critique; not from the individual subordinated to the collective, but from the dialectics of subjectivity and collectivity. This is not an attempt at a sweeping global overview of Leftist cultures either, but a collection that brings together culture-specific and comparative perspectives. This book searches for fragments of and on the Left, past and present, through which to rethink and patch a fragmented world.

Este número contiene 240 páginas, algunas con textos en inglés y el resto con traducciones. Esta publicación se distribuye a abonados en Israel y en el extranjero, a bibliotecas de judaica de todo el mundo y a revistas literarias y escritores judíos y no judíos de destaque. El comité de redacción del número 7 de «The Jerusalem Review» incluye algunos de los mejores escritores y miembros del mundo académico en Israel y en el extranjero. En concordancia con el marco ideológico básico de la revista, publicamos en ella traducciones al inglés de textos en hebreo postbíblico de todas las épocas. Así, se puede encontrar en ella poemas de poetas israelíes modernos, junto con Abraham Ibn Ezra y Berl Pomerantz (un poeta judío de la época anterior al Holocausto). La sección de prosa incluye una larga novela de Yoram Kaniuk y memorias del Holocausto de Arié Stav. Otra sección incluye obras de escritores judíos de Estados Unidos y de Gran Bretaña, como Paul Oppenheimer, Alicia Ostriker, Mark Strand, Elaine Feinstein y Charles Bernstein. Debido a la decisión del redactor de dar el podio, en cada uno de los números de la «Review», a un poeta o escritor no judío que desea mantener un diálogo con la historia y la cultura judeo-israelí y con la literatura hebrea, optamos por incluir en este número poemas traducidos del polaco al inglés, de uno de los poetas y escritores polacos más famosos en la actualidad, Krzysztof Karasek. La sección de ensayos incluye un ensayo en gran escala de Amos Funkenstein sobre La teología frente al Holocausto, así como ensayos de A. B. Yehoshua y Gabriel Moked sobre la identidad judía e israelí. Junto a estas secciones, la Review también incluye una sección de Oriente Medio con una entrevista realizada hace algunos años al Premio Nobel egipcio Naguib Mahfouz, sumamente pertinente para las relaciones actuales entre Israel y Egipto y los demás países árabes. This book examines how the Left is affected by European integration. It starts from the rejection of the European Constitution in France and the Netherlands in 2005, in which left-wing parties played key roles. The book explores the level of pro- and anti-EU sentiment among left-wing parties. It discusses the left's reaction to the EU's neo-liberal policies such as Laval, the Lisbon Agenda and the Bolkestein Directive. It examines the extent to which parties are Europeanised or remain nationally-oriented. The book looks at parties from all three left-wing families -social democrats, left-socialists and left-greens. It contains case-studies of eleven EU member states, and also examines the left in the European Parliament. It provides a unique cross-national, cross-party evaluation of contemporary events. ;

Der Dichter – Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550–1604) – verbirgt seinen Namen von Anfang an hinter dem Schleier diverser Pseudonyme: Meritum petere grave, Fortunatus Infoelix, Ferenda Natura, Spraeta tamen vivunt, My lucke is losse, Phaeton. Ab 1593 (im Herbst dieses Jahres erscheint unter dem Namen William Shakespeare ein Versepos, »Venus and Adonis«) ist es dann nur noch eines: William Shakespeare. Diese hundert Gedichte eines rollenkundigen Spötters und sprachspielverliebten Dialektikers, die fast ausnahmslos um das Mit- und Gegeneinander von Liebe und Zurückweisung, Sehnsucht und Widerwillen, Leidenschaft und Bezähmung kreisen, sind eine Neuerscheinung in der Welt der Literatur. Sie gewinnen ihren Wert nicht durch die Zuschreibung an William Shakespeare. Umgekehrt: Ihre Qualität stützt die These, dass Edward de Vere ab 1593 unter dem Pseudonym William Shakespeare publizierte.

In the years between the two world wars, fascism triumphed in Italy, Germany, Spain and elsewhere, coming to power after intense struggles with the labour movements of those countries. This book, available in paperback for the first time, analyses the way in which the British left responded to this new challenge. How did socialists and communists in Britain explain what fascism was? What did they do to oppose it, and how successful were they? In examining the theories and actions of the Labour Party, the TUC, the Communist Party and other, smaller left-wing groups, the book explains their different approaches, while at the same time highlighting the common thread that ran through all their interpretations of fascism. The author argues that the British left has been largely overlooked in the few specific studies of anti-fascism that exist, with the focus being disproportionately applied to its European counterparts. He also takes issue with recent developments in the study of fascism, and argues that the views of the left, often derided by modern historians, are still relevant today.

Als Buch im Buch, versteckt in einer anonym publizierten literarischen Anthologie des Jahres 1573, erschien die erste englische Novelle, The Adventures of Master F. I., deren virtuose Dialoge zwischen Verspieltheit und Strenge, höfischem Frost und seelischem Fieber oszillieren. Im Raffinement der Darstellung, in der virtuosen Beiläufigkeit und poetischen Dichte sind die Aventiuren unvergleichlich. Das bald vom Markt verschwundene Buch erschien zwei Jahre später in »gereinigter« Version unter dem Namen des Soldatendichters George Gascoigne. In der historisch-philologischen Analyse des Nachworts entwickelt Kurt Kreiler eine Indizienkette, die auf die Autorschaft eines großen anderen schließen läßt. Danach heißt der Verfasser der Aventiuren Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550 bis 1604), der von seinen Zeitgenossen als der »Beste im Fach Komödie« gerühmt wurde und in unserer Zeit als Anwärter auf die Autorschaft Shakespeares gilt. Der Übersetzung wurde die erste Ausgabe von 1573 zugrunde gelegt. Fortunatus Infoelix, ein galanter Ritter des 16. Jahrhunderts, weilt zu Gast in einem Schloß und verliebt sich in die Schwiegertochter des Hausherrn. Lady Elynor reizt den amourösen Belagerer durch die Doppeldeutigkeit ihres Widerstands. Die Zeremonien der Liebesverschwörung werden jäh unterbrochen, als eine zweite Frau den glücklichen Unglücklichen zum Tanz verführt. Wenn sie sich anderntags Master Infoelix als verständnisvolle Freundin andient, so nur deshalb, um sein »Liebesexperiment« geschickt zu steuern …

Sleep and its spaces in Middle English literature

Middle English literature is intimately concerned with sleep and the spaces in which it takes place. In the medieval English imagination, sleep is an embodied and culturally determined act. It is both performed and interpreted by characters and contemporaries, subject to a particular habitus and understood through particular hermeneutic lenses. While illuminating the intersecting medical and moral discourses by which it is shaped, sleep also sheds light on subjects in favour of which it has hitherto been overlooked: what sleep can enable (dreams and dream poetry) or what it can stand in for or supersede (desire and sex). This book argues that sleep mediates thematic concerns and questions in ways that have ethical, affective and oneiric implications. At the same time, it offers important contributions to understanding different Middle English genres: romance, dream vision, drama and fabliau.

This series contains about 1,800 modern prints collected by Lu Xun at that time, which authored by nearly 200 domestic printmakers and currently in the Lu Xun Memorial Hall in Shanghai and the Lu Xun Museum in Beijing. It is showcasing the glorious history of modern Chinese woodcut art: In the 1920s and 1930s, in order to guide the artistic direction of Chinese literary youth, smashed the KMT’s counter-revolutionary cultural " encirclement and suppression", Mr. Lu Xun held a "woodcut workshop" in Shanghai, and cultivated a group of emerging woodcut backbone. These backbones led young artists in various regions of the country to create a large number of realistic works reflecting the suffering and tragic fate of the people at the bottom of the society at that time. They cruelly lashed the dark reality of society and called for national salvation and survival. These young woodcutters sent their woodcut works to Lu Xun, who not only guided their creation personally, but also spared no effort to collect, publicize and promote them to the public. With the active advocacy and support of Mr. Lu Xun, the emerging woodcut movement in China has developed vigorously, driving the modernization of Chinese art and leaving an indelible glorious footprint in the history of Chinese modern culture and art. This complete collection is a companion to the The Complete Collection of Foreign Prints by Lu Xun published in 2014.
