Nordau to NASDAQ: The Evolution of an Israeli High-Tech Start-Up

        A Second Updated Edition

        by Miriah Yahil-Wax & Roni A. Einav

“So how much are we worth, in your opinion?” I spoke up. “If some party, yours perhaps, would be interested in merging with us tomorrow morning, how much would we be worth?” Rick Gardner lifted his glass to the light, relished its crimson transparency and said: “My estimate for your company is between $600 and $620 million.” Then he smiled once more and emptied his glass. This crucial meeting with co-founder Roni Einav marks a turning point in the history of The New Dimension Software, one of Israel’s most successful software companies at the time, which was eventually sold to Texas-based BMC Software for $675 million. Armed only with an M.A. degree in engineering and operations research from the Technion, plus his unshaken resilience and determination, Mr. Einav (Roni, as his friends and colleagues call him) started to make his way. The book candidly exposes the power struggles and bold decisions that led to the extraordinary success of The New Dimension. Mr. Einav's analysis of his extensive experience touches upon trade secrets: How do you recognize a good idea? How do you cope with bureaucracy or inner dissent? How do you identify or create a significant share for your software products in the global market? Where do you seek financing and what do you do when none is found? Roni Einav's personal journey coincides with that of the State of Israel, from its inception. He served his country as a system analyst in its defense forces, and as a civilian he participated in the planning and construction of major new towns in pre-revolutionary Iran. Nordau to NASDAQ is a unique and true example of the bigger story of the amazing talents, daring, leadership and dedication that made possible the birth and ascent to prominence of the Israeli high-tech industry, which led to the country often being called a “start-up nation.” This second updated edition also covers the last twenty years of the author’s career and his active involvement in various technology start-ups, including the founding of high-tech companies such as Jacada, White Source, Eurekify, and thirty other ventures. An English-language eBook edition was published in 2012 and translated into several languages. A Second updated edition has been scheduled for publication in Fall  2024 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc., CA. 288 pages , 15x 22.5 cm

        LANCE WHO LOST HIS PANTS

In the Middle of the Dance

        by Israel (Poochoo) Wiesler

This is a story about a skinny boy who at first did not like to eat and was very thin, but later on, when he finally started to eat – he would not stop. It was awful: when he was thin his pants would fall down, and when he gained weight they would burst at the seams. What could be done? Ask his mother who had a solution to every problem. This book, which has been selling extremely well in Israel for the last ten years, recently became even more popular with the growing awareness among both parents and children of the problem of childhood obesity. Although there is a moral to the story, its great success (12 editions have been published so far!) stems mainly from the fun that the young readers derive from the story.   The author, Israel Wiesler (nicknamed “Poochoo”), was born in Tel Aviv and published his first book, “What a Gang,” at the age of 26. “What a Gang” won a major literary award, became a best-seller and was adapted into a successful movie. Since then, Wiesler has written more than thirty books and dozens of scripts for TV series aimed at children and young adults. Wiesler’s works, written with a warm and special sense of humor, won six literary prizes in Israel. In the reputable “Ofek Lexicon” for children’s literature in Hebrew, Wiesler is described as “the best humorist writer for children and young adults in Israel.” Poochoo was one of the only three Israeli writers to be honored last year by the printing of a postage stamp portraying the cover of one of his books. An German-language eBook edition has been scheduled for summer 2015 by Lindenfels Von Pressel Verlag, Frankfurt am Main. 20 pages, full-color hardcover and 2 colors illustrations inside, 22X23 cm

        Good Evening, Good Night

        The cultural history of sleep

        by Karoline Walter

What we associate with sleep is shaped by the culture we live in. Whereas the God of the Bible never sleeps, the sinful human falls asleep every night and is thus marked as an inferior being. In the Age of Enlightenment, (too much) sleep was considered a waste of strength, which could otherwise be used to change the world. These days, sleep seems to be subject to the same tenets of usefulness as everything else and is seen to assist with the optimization of one’s self. However, culture and technology also influence how we sleep: for example, the constant availability of light, the modern conditions of work and all sorts of distractions have meant that we no longer follow our natural rhythm – a first sleep before midnight and a second sleep after a longer period of wakefulness, during which we may be active. In “Good Evening, Good Night”, Karoline Walter uses numerous examples from history, literature and research to illustrate how sleep and sleeping have changed across cultures and eras – an entertaining read, certainly nothing to put you to sleep.

        International Trade in Forest Products

Lumber Trade Disputes, Models and Examples

by G Cornelis van Kooten, Linda Voss

Because of the long-standing Canada-U.S. lumber trade dispute and the current pressure on the world's forests as a renewable energy source, much attention has been directed toward the modelling of international trade in wood products. Two types of trade models are described in this book: one is rooted in economic theory and mathematical programming, and the other consists of two econometric/statistical models--a gravity model rooted in theory and an approach known as GVAR that relies on time series analyses. The purpose of the book is to provide the background theory behind models and facilitate readers in easily constructing their own models to analyse policy questions that they wish to address, whether in forestry or some other sector. Examples in the book are meant to illustrate how models can be used to say something about a variety of issues, including identification of the gains and losses to various players in the North American softwood lumber business, and the potential for redirecting sales of lumber to countries outside the United States. The discussion is expanded to include other products besides lumber, and used to examine, for example, the effects of log export restrictions by one nation on all other forestry jurisdictions, the impacts of climate policies as they relate to the global forest sector, and the impact of oil prices on forest product markets throughout the world. This book will appeal to practising economists and researchers who wish to examine various policies that affect international trade, whether their interest is local or international in scope. Because the book provides the theoretical bases underlying various models, students and practitioners will find this a valuable reference book or supplementary textbook.

The Apocrypha. Four Conversations About Lesya Ukrainka

by Oksana Zabuzhko, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk

This book was published to commemorate 150 years from the birth of the classic Ukrainian author Lesya Ukrainka. It is based on transcripts of conversations between Oksana Zabuzhko and His Beatitude Svyatoslav Shevchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The works of Lesya Ukrainka, included in the second part of the book, are the main topic of their conversation, namely how the stories from evangelical and early Christian history formed the basis of her later work. Ukrainka's work was praised by the Soviet authorities for its socalled atheism but was censored from being staged in the theatres. Ukrainka's spiritual journey during the last twelve years of her life, her interpretation of the images of Judas and Christ, the cult of martyrdom, and the female role in the Christian context are thoroughly analysed in Zabuzhko and Shevchuk's conversations. Zabuzhko built a dialogue between Christianity, and what Soviet and post-Soviet critics called atheism that was in reality a conflict with synodal Orthodoxy.

        Sleep Disorders, Second Edition

by Mary Brophy Marcus and Christine Adamec

Sleep is as important to the human body as food and water. Recent research suggests that those who get less than the recommended eight hours a night are more likely to become sick and die sooner than their well-rested counterparts. Though there is much about sleep that remains a mystery to scientists, there is mounting evidence of health risks as more and more Americans cut back on needed rest and bad sleep habits are being passed on to children. Sleep Disorders, Second Edition is a concise guide to sleep and sheds helpful light on how it functions and how it can be disrupted. Coverage includes sleep disorders such as insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and sleepwalking. Sleep’s relationship to chronic illnesses is also discussed. Chapters include: What Is Sleep? Insomnia Sleep Apnea Movement Disorders Narcolepsy Childhood Sleep Disorders

        Fight back

        Punk, politics and resistance

        by The Subcultures Network

Fight back examines the different ways punk - as a youth/subculture - may provide space for political expression and action. Bringing together scholars from a range of academic disciplines (history, sociology, cultural studies, politics, English, music), it showcases innovative research into the diverse ways in which punk may be used and interpreted. The essays are concerned with three main themes: identity, locality and communication. These, in turn, cover subjects relating to questions of class, age and gender; the relationship between punk, locality and socio-political context; and the ways in which punk's meaning has been expressed from within the subculture and reflected by the media. Jon Savage, the foremost commentator and curator of punk's cultural legacy, provides an afterword on punk's impact and dissemination from the 1970s to the present day.

        Kilroy was here

        Ein immerwährender Kalender

by Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Kat Menschik
