The question of succession in late Elizabethan England

Doubtful and dangerous examines the pivotal influence of the succession question on the politics, religion and culture of the post-Armada years of Queen Elizabeth's reign. Although the earlier Elizabethan succession controversy has long commanded scholarly attention, the later period has suffered from relative obscurity. This book remedies the situation. Taking a thematic and interdisciplinary approach, individual essays demonstrate that key late Elizabethan texts - literary, political and polemical - cannot be understood without reference to the succession. The essays also reveal how the issue affected court politics, lay at the heart of religious disputes, stimulated constitutional innovation, and shaped foreign relations. By situating the topic within its historiographical and chronological contexts, the editors offer a novel account of the whole reign. Interdisciplinary in scope and spanning the crucial transition from the Tudors to the Stuarts, the book will be indispensable to scholars and students of early modern British and Irish history, literature and religion. ;

'Orthodoxy', 'Heterodoxy' and the politics of the parish in early Stuart London

This book is based on a story. Its main protagonists are a London clergyman, Stephen Denison, and a lay sectmaster and prophet, John Etherington. The dispute between the two men blew up in the mid-1620s, but its reverberations can be traced back to the 1590s and continued to 1640. Through Denison the book analyses the tensions and contradictions within the 'religion of protestants' that dominated great swathes of the early Stuart church. Through Etherington, it eavesdrops on a London puritan underground that has remained largely hidden from view and which, while it was related to, indeed, parasitic upon, was not coterminous with, the order and orthodoxy-centred puritanism of Stephen Denison. By placing the Denison/Etherington dispute in its multiple contexts, the book becomes a study of puritan theology and intra-puritan theological dispute; of lay clerical relations and of the politics of the parish; and thus of the social history of parish and puritan religion in London. ;

Adelbert von Chamisso (Louis Charles Adelaide de Ch.), Dichter und Naturforscher, wurde am 30.1.1781 als Sohn eines lothringischen Offizers auf Schloß Boncourt (Champagne) geboren und starb am 21.1.1838 in Berlin. Seine nach der Konfiskation gänzlich verarmten Eltern flüchteten 1790 mit dem Kind vor der Fränzöischen Revolution nach Lüttich. Von dort kamen sie über Den Haag, Düsseldorf und Bayreuthz nach Berlin. Dort wurde Chamisso 1801 Leutnant mit einem preußischen Regiment. Vom Millitärdienst enttäuscht, nahm er 1806 seinen Abschied und widmete sich in Frankreich und auf dem Gut der Mme. de Stael naturwissenschaftliche Studien. 1812-1815 Studium der Medizin und Botanik in Berlin. 1815-1818 nahm Chamisso als Naturforscheran einer russischen Weltumsegelung teil, die er in seinen "Bemerkungen und Ansichten auf einer Entdeckungsreise" (1821) schilderte. Seine symbolische Novelle vom verkauften Schatten, "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte", schrieb er während der Freiheitskriege 1813 in Kunersdorf. In fast alle Weltsprachen übersetzt, machte sie ihren Verfasser weltberühmt. Die reizvollsten Illustrationen zu "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" erschienen 1908. Mit ihren hat Emil Preetouris (1883-1973) - Mitarbeiter der Zeitschriften "Simplicissismus" und "Jugend" - seine Laufbahn als Erneuerer der Buchkunst und als einer der einflußreichsten Graphiker unseres Jahrhunderts begonnen. Seine Essay "Adelbert von Chamisso" schrieb Thomas Mann 19211 eigens für die Einzelausgabe dieser Novelle.

Karl Kraus wurde am 28. April 1874 im nordböhmischen Gitschin / Österreich-Ungarn (heute: Jicín / Tschechien) als Sohn eines jüdischen Papierfabrikanten geboren. In Wien studierte er seit 1877 Jura, Philosophie und Germanistik, schloß das Studium jedoch nicht ab. Schon während der Studienzeit veröffentlichte er literaturkritische Beiträge u.a. in der Zeitschrift Die Gesellschaft. Daneben betätigte er sich als Dramatiker, Lyriker und Vortragskünstler und hatte Kontakt zu Mitgliedern der Gruppe "Jung-Wien", u.a. Arthur Schnitzler und Hugo von Hofmannsthal, von denen er sich aber 1897 in der Satire Die demolierte Literatur distanzierte. 1899 gründete er die Zeitschrift Die Fackel. Sie war zeitlebens die wichtigste Veröffentlichungsplattform für seine kulturkritischen Beiträge. Er starb am 12. Juni 1936 in Wien.
