R is a freely available, open-source statistical programming environment which provides powerful statistical analysis tools and graphics outputs. Nach seinen sprachphilosophischen Arbeiten ('Sprechakte', stw 458; 'Ausdruck und Bedeutung', stw 349) hat John R. Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

Detective fiction as trauma literature

Sara Paretsky is known for her influential V.I. Warshawski series, which transformed the masculine hard-boiled detective formula into a vehicle for feminist values. But Paretsky does more than this. Her novels also illustrate the extent to which detective fiction acts as a literature of trauma, allowing Paretsky to address the politics of agency in ways that go beyond the personal, for trauma always has a social and a political dimension. Paretsky's work also exploits the way detective fiction mirrors the writing of history. Here, Paretsky uses the form to expose the partiality of historical accounts - whether they be personal, institutional, or national - that authorise 'forgetting' of a particularly insidious kind. Significantly, all these issues are explored within the framework of the traditional hard-boiled detective novel. As a result, Paretsky's achievement forces us to acknowledge the deeply subversive potential of detective fiction.

Oscar (Fingal O’Flahertie Wills) Wilde wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Dublin als Sohn des Arztes William Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee geboren. Er studierte klassische Literatur am Trinity College in Dublin und am Magdalen College in Oxford. 1879 ging er nach London, wo er sich bald durch seinen extravaganten Lebensstil und seine rhetorische Gewandtheit einen Namen machte. Nach Reisen in die USA, nach Kanada und Frankreich arbeitete Wilde zunächst für verschiedene Zeitungen als Lektor und Herausgeber. Seit 1884 mit Constance Lloyd verheiratet, schrieb und veröffentlichte er 1888 für seine eigenen Kinder die Märchensammlung The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In den folgenden Jahren entstanden weitere Erzählungen (wie The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891) und zahlreiche Bühnenstücke (wie The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895), die außerordentliches literarisches und gesellschaftliches Aufsehen erregten. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolges stürzte ihn dann jedoch der Skandal um das langjährige Verhältnis mit Lord Alfred Douglas in den Ruin. Wilde verlor eine Verleumdungsklage gegen Douglas Vater, der ihn der Sodomie bezichtigt hatte, und wurde selbst in einem Strafprozeß wegen Unzucht zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis in Reading floh er vor der gesellschaftlichen Ächtung unter falschem Namen nach Paris. Völlig mittellos starb er hier am 30. November 1900. Kurt Landauer (1884-1961), Präsident von Bayern München von 1913-33 und wieder ab 1947. Hedwig Lachmann, geboren 1865 in Stolp und verstorben 1918 in Krumbach, war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin und Übersetzerin.

It explores for the first time a series of episodic, circumstantial and unique mobilisations that spanned from late 1641 to early 1645 and which ultimately led to the establishment of the New Model Army. Based on research from two-dozen archives, Civil war London charts the successes and failures of efforts to move London's vast resources and in the process poses a number of challenges to longstanding notions about the capital's 'parliamentarian' makeup. It reveals interactions between London's Corporation, parochial communities and livery companies, between preachers and parishioners and between agitators, propagandists and common people. Within these tangled webs of political engagement reside the untold stories of the movement of money and men, but also of parliament's eventual success in the English Civil War.
