The British political elite and Europe, 1959-1984

        A higher loyalty

        by Bob Nicholls

This book offers an original interpretation of Britain's relationship with Europe over a 25 year period: 1959-84 and advances the argument that the current problems over EU membership resulted from much earlier political machinations. This evidence based account of the seminal period analyses the applications for EEC membership, the 1975 referendum, and the role of the press. Was the British public misled over the true aims of the European project? How significant was the role of the press in changing public opinion from anti, to pro Common Market membership? Why, after over 40 years since Britain became a member of the European community, does the issue continue to deeply divide not only the political elite, but also the British public? These, and other pertinent questions are answered in this timely book on a subject that remains topical and highly controversial.

        Practical R for Biologists

        An Introduction

by Donald Quicke, Buntika A Butcher, Rachel Kruft Welton

R is a freely available, open-source statistical programming environment which provides powerful statistical analysis tools and graphics outputs. R is now used by a very wide range of people; biologists (the primary audience of this book), but also all other scientists and engineers, economists, market researchers and medical professionals. R users with expertise are constantly adding new associated packages, and the range already available is immense. This text works through a set of studies that collectively represent almost all the R operations that biology students need in order to analyse their own data. The material is designed to serve students from first year undergraduates through to those beginning post graduate levels. Chapters are organized around topics such as graphing, classical statistical tests, statistical modelling, mapping, and text parsing. Examples are based on real scientific studies, and each one covers the use of more R functions than those simply necessary to get a p-value or plot. The book walks the reader through the data analysis process, starting with very simple plots, and continuing through more complex analyses and programming. It shows how to deal with issues such as error messages that can be confronting for beginners, in order to set students up for a successful scientific career using R.Collectively the authors have a vast amount of teaching experience which they apply here to make the passage into R programming as gentle and easy as possible, whilst guiding the reader to tackle quite complicated programming. James Joyce Bilder

by Greg Vitiello, Bob Cato, Anthony Burgess

April 1945

by Alexander Kluge, W. G. Sebald

Alexander Kluges Erzählung Luftangriff auf Halberstadt am 8. April 1945 erschien 1977.

        Hari Kunzru

        by Kristian Shaw, Sara Upstone

This book is the first edited collection to focus on the work of contemporary author Hari Kunzru. It contains major new essays on each of his novels - The Impressionist, Transmission, My Revolutions, Gods Without Men, White Tears and Red Pill - as well as his short fiction and non-fiction writings. The collection situates Kunzru's work within current debates regarding postmodernism, postcolonialism, and post-postmodernism, and examines how Kunzru's work is central to major thematic concerns of contemporary writing including whiteness, national identity, Britishness, cosmopolitanism, music, space, memory, art practice, trauma, Brexit, immigration, covid-19, and populist politics. The book engages with current debates regarding the politics of publishing of ethnic writers, examining how Kunzru has managed to shape a career in resistance of narrow labelling where many other writers have struggled to achieve long-term recognition.

        We Can Do Better

        by Arvay, Clemens G.

How Environmental Destruction Caused the Corona Pandemic and Why Ecological Medicine Can Save Us The corona crisis can repeat itself at any time. A book about the disease-causing mechanisms of environmental pollution, and an innovative guide out of the health crisis Clemens Arvay is an expert in the field of medical ecology. In WE CAN DO BETTER, he takes the current corona crisis as an opportunity to look far beyond and work out exactly why negative environmental factors are responsible for an increasing deterioration of public health. Yet the author also points the way out of the calamity, explaining how we ourselves and future generations can improve our health through a different approach to nature. It was only because of environmental factors that COVID-19 was able to become a pandemic. Thus, for Clemens Arvay the corona crisis represents a symptom of a much larger problem, namely, a natural habitat that is making humans sick. It is already known today that fine particulate matter intensifies not only corona but also influenza infections, thereby killing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide every year. Light pollution leads to a rapid increase in cancer, and even the abrasion of automobile tires inhibits our immune system. Clemens Arvay makes himself clear: this is our last chance to take control of the situation. After the corona crisis, we must never allow things to return to the way they were before. Arvay therefore calls for nothing less than an eco-medical revolution in healthcare; a different, less global and industrialized lifestyle. And he shows each and every one of us how we can utilize factors in our environment to protect our health, strengthen our immune system, and stay well. Intentionalität

Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes

by Harvey P. Gavagai, John R. Searle

Popular imperialism and the military, 1850-1950

        by John M. MacKenzie

Colonial war played a vital part in transforming the reputation of the military and placing it on a standing equal to that of the navy. The book is concerned with the interactive culture of colonial warfare, with the representation of the military in popular media at home, and how these images affected attitudes towards war itself and wider intellectual and institutional forces. It sets out to relate the changing image of the military to these fundamental facts. For the dominant people they were an atavistic form of war, shorn of guilt by Social Darwinian and racial ideas, and rendered less dangerous by the increasing technological gap between Europe and the world. Attempts to justify and understand war were naturally important to dominant people, for the extension of imperial power was seldom a peaceful process. The entertainment value of war in the British imperial experience does seem to have taken new and more intensive forms from roughly the middle of the nineteenth century. Themes such as the delusive seduction of martial music, the sketch of the music hall song, powerful mythic texts of popular imperialism, and heroic myths of empire are discussed extensively. The first important British war correspondent was William Howard Russell (1820-1907) of The Times, in the Crimea. The 1870s saw a dramatic change in the representation of the officer in British battle painting. Up to that point it was the officer's courage, tactical wisdom and social prestige that were put on display.

The life–cycle in Western Europe, c.1300–c.1500

by S. H. Rigby, Deborah Youngs

This is the first study to examine the entire life cycle in the Middle Ages. Drawing on a wide range of secondary and primary material, the book explores the timing and experiences of infancy, childhood, adolescence and youth, adulthood, old age and, finally, death. It discusses attitudes towards ageing, rites of passage, age stereotypes in operation, and the means by which age was used as a form of social control, compelling individuals to work, govern, marry and pay taxes. The wide scope of the study allows contrasts and comparisons to be made across gender, social status and geographical location. It considers whether men and women experienced the ageing process in the same way, and examines the differences that can be discerned between northern and southern Europe. The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries suffered famine, warfare, plague and population collapse. This fascinating consideration of the life cycle adds a new dimension to the debate over continuity and change in a period of social and demographic upheaval.

        Nobody’s Fool (DE)

        by Hillel Lerman

        Imperialism and the natural world

        by John M. MacKenzie

Imperial power, both formal and informal, and research in the natural sciences were closely dependent in the nineteenth century. This book examines a portion of the mass-produced juvenile literature, focusing on the cluster of ideas connected with Britain's role in the maintenance of order and the spread of civilization. It discusses the political economy of Western ecological systems, and the consequences of their extension to the colonial periphery, particularly in forms of forest conservation. Progress and consumerism were major constituents of the consensus that helped stabilise the late Victorian society, but consumerism only works if it can deliver the goods. From 1842 onwards, almost all major episodes of coordinated popular resistance to colonial rule in India were preceded by phases of vigorous resistance to colonial forest control. By the late 1840s, a limited number of professional positions were available for geologists in British imperial service, but imperial geology had a longer pedigree. Modern imperialism or 'municipal imperialism' offers a broader framework for understanding the origins, long duration and persistent support for overseas expansion which transcended the rise and fall of cabinets or international realignments in the 1800s. Although medical scientists began to discern and control the microbiological causes of tropical ills after the mid-nineteenth century, the claims for climatic causation did not undergo a corresponding decline. Arthur Pearson's Pearson's Magazine was patriotic, militaristic and devoted to royalty. The book explores how science emerged as an important feature of the development policies of the Colonial Office (CO) of the colonial empire.

        Herminie and Fanny Pereire

Elite Jewish women in nineteenth-century France

        by Helen M. Davies

Herminie and Fanny Pereire were sisters-in-law, married to the eminent Jewish bankers and Saint-Simonian socialists Emile and Isaac. They were also mother and daughter. This book, a companion to the author's acclaimed Emile and Isaac Pereire (2015), sheds new light on elite Jewish families in nineteenth-century France. Drawing on the family archives, it traces the Pereires across a century of major social and political change, from the Napoleonic period to the cusp of the First World War, revealing the active role they played as bourgeois women both within and outside the family. It offers insights into Jewish assimilation, embourgeoisement and gender relations, through the lens of one of the most fascinating families of the century.
