        Im Zentrum der traditionellen analytischen Philosophie steht die Suche nach hinreichenden und notwendigen Bedingungen des jeweils zu untersuchenden Begriffs. Craig zeigt, daß solche Untersuchungen im Hinblick auf den Wissensbegriff zwar nützliche Daten liefern können, bisher aber gescheitert sind und im Grunde genommen am Witz dieses Begriffs vorbeigehen. Statt der analytischen Untersuchung will Craig verstehen, auf welches (praktische) Bedürfnis die Menschen mit der Entwicklung des Wissensbegriffs reagieren. Dieser Ansatz wird im Sinne einer pragmatischen Untersuchung ausgebaut und anhand von Beispielen unter steter Berücksichtigung der klassischen Analyse (»Wissen« = »wahre Überzeugung mit triftiger Begründung«) erörtert. Der so gewonnene »pragmatische« Wissensbegriff wird sodann mit Gegenbeispielen konfrontiert, und es wird gezeigt, daß ein für Menschen brauchbarer Wissensbegriff objektiv sein muß. Der bei diesen Untersuchungen in Anspruch genommene und begründete Pragmatismus steht in gespannter Beziehung zu allen Formen des Skeptizismus. Bei der durch dieses Spannungsverhältnis ausgelösten Auseinandersetzung mit dem Skeptizismus unterscheidet Craig zwischen kulturgeschichtlichen Gründen für die skeptizistische Einstellung und solchen, die auf den pragmatischen Ursprung des Wissensbegriffs und die Deutung des Objektivierungsprozesses zurückgehen. Erörtert werden dabei einerseits theologisch/religiös und naturwissenschaftlich motivierte Formen des Skeptizismus und andererseits solche, die im Umkreis der Zweckfrage bezüglich des Wissens entstehen, womit der Zusammenhang zwischen der nie zur Ruhe kommenden skeptischen Problematik und den Ergebnissen der vorangehenden Untersuchungen hergestellt wird.

        Friedrich Nietzsche wurde am 15. Oktober 1844 in Röcken bei Lützen als Sohn eines Pastors geboren. Er studierte in Bonn und Leipzig zunächst Sprachwissenschaften und evangelische Theologie, seinen Abschluß machte er jedoch nur in klassischer Philologie. 1868 lernte er Richard Wagner kennen, der sein Denken neben Schopenhauer stark beeinflußte. Einige Jahre später zerbrach die Freundschaft über Nietzsches Geringschätzung der Bayreuther Festspiele. 1869 wurde er auf eine Professur für Altphilologie nach Basel berufen, die er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zehn Jahre später wieder aufgab. Fortan lebte er von seiner Pension und finanzierte davon viele Reisen, u.a. in die Schweiz und nach Italien, auf denen seine wichtigsten philosophischen Werke entstanden. In seinen Hauptwerken sagte Nietzsche den Tod Gottes voraus, beschrieb den Übermenschen, trat für die Umwertung aller Werte ein und prägte somit den Nihilismus. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen Also sprach Zarathustra (1883) und Ecce Homo (1908). In den 1880er Jahren nahmen seine körperlichen und seelischen Leiden zu und gipfelten 1889 in einem Zusammenbruch, von dem er sich nicht mehr erholte. Bis zu seinem Tod am 25. August 1900 in Weimar wurde er von seiner Mutter und seiner Schwester gepflegt. Dieter Borchmeyer, geboren 1941, ist Professor emeritus an der Universität Heidelberg, war Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste und lehrt im Rahmen der Stiftungsdozentur »Heidelberger Vorträge zur Kulturtheorie« weiterhin an der Universität Heidelberg. Borchmeyers Arbeitsfeld ist vor allem die deutsche Literatur vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert und das Musiktheater mit Monographien zu Goethe, Schiller, Mozart, Wagner und Nietzsche. Richard McKay Rorty wird am 4. Oktober 1931 in New York City geboren und kommt früh mit im weitesten Sinne linken und progressiven Ideen in Berührung. Im Alter von 14 Jahren beginnt er ein Philosophiestudium in Chicago, 1956 promoviert er an der Yale University. Von 1958 bis 1961 ist Rorty Assistant Professor am Wellesley College, danach hat er bis 1982 eine Professur für analytische Philosophie an der Princeton University inne. 1979 erscheint sein bekanntestes Werk, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (dt. Der Spiegel der Natur), in dem er zahlreiche klassische Fragen der Philosophie einer scharfen Kritik unterzieht; zugleich wendet er sich verstärkt kulturellen und politischen Fragen zu. Als Konsequenz dieser Kehrtwende verlässt Rorty 1982 Princeton und geht als Kenan Professor of the Humanities an die University of Virginia, ab 1998 schließlich lehrt er Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Stanford University. Am 8. Juni 2007 stirbt Richard Rorty in Palo Alto, Kalifornien.

        The First and Second Parts of King Edward the Fourth

        'Edward IV' (1599) was printed no less than six times up to 1626, and was one of the best loved plays of the early modern period, but this edition is the first since the 1870s. The play premiered at a moment when the representation of medieval history in any format was coming under the hostile scrutiny of the Elizabethan government. Yet the playwright produced a text which was at once generically complex (the play blurs the distinction between chronicle history and 'domestic' tragedy), brilliantly assured in its dramatic craftsmanship, and politically explosive. The text of this new paperback edition has already been used by the actors at Shakespeare's Globe when they gave the first London performance of 'Edward IV' for more than four centuries. By demonstrating the playwright's dextrous marshalling of a remarkable range of sources, and by examining afresh the dramatist's singular theatrical technique, this volume reopens an exciting if difficult play to a new generation of scholars and performers. ;
