Who are we? This is the question that the Ukraїner team has been working on every day for over five years. We tell stories from different parts of Ukraine, and in this way we seek the answer. This book has grown out of a great desire to explore and tell about the people in Ukraine. First of all, it is about the indigenous peoples here, because since July 2021, in addition to Ukrainians, this list has officially included the Crimean Tatars, Krymchaks and Karaites. And also it is about a whole range of national minorities whose representatives appeared on our lands for one reason or another. After all, the history of each people living in the territory of Ukraine is a part of our common history, as ancient and rooted as the formation of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea and nearby steppe of Prychornomoria, or as fresh as the newly Indian student community in Zakarpattia. With the story of the latter, in 2017 Ukraїner began a series of more than 30 multimedia stories about national minorities of Ukraine, fragments of which became the basis for this book. Most stories are accompanied by QR codes with links, which you can follow to watch the stories. We also set out to tell about the diversity of cultures and thereby answer the question: what are we? The deeper we researched the traditional holidays, cuisine, and symbols of each separate people, the more we found in common.

The years 2021 to 2030 have been designated as "The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration". Ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation efforts face unprecedented challenges, especially in developing countries and areas, such as the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region. This huge HKH region, which includes areas in eight separate countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan), is a biodiversity hotspot with a vast array of ecosystems, landscapes, peoples and cultures. It is known as one of 'the pulses of the world'. However, the HKH is also the world's largest and poorest mountain region, where landscapes and environments have been severely damaged as a result of climate change and human activities. Coordinating conservation and restoration policies, sharing knowledge and funds, and maintaining livelihoods are major challenges and are in urgent need of improvement. This book details the past and current ecological problems in the HKH region, and the threats and challenges that ecosystems and local people face. It pays special attention to developments of transformative adaptations and presents examples of sustainable conservation and ecological restoration management practices. Three primary questions are addressed: (1) Do the existing conservation strategies of international organizations and government policies really protect ecosystems and solve biodiversity problems? (2) Can these management measures be one-time solutions? and (3) What is the strategic framework and scenario prognosis for the future based on the historical trajectory of ecological conservation and restoration in the region? Gateway communities that neighbour parks and protected areas are impacted by tourism, while facing unique circumstances related to protected area management. The vision of the Ukrainian history dominant in the Russian Empire and in the Soviet Union focused exclusively on the heroic Cossacks and disenfranchised peasants. There was no room in it for the local elites: the Ukrainian aristocracy (szlachta) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. As the result of this biased perspective, Ukrainians to this day know very little about the life of those people. This book invites the readers to take a closer look at the Ukrainian aristocracy. This introduction is done in a somewhat unusual form, through true anecdotes from the life of aristocracy gleaned from court records and other sources from the time. We get glimpses of the elites not only in their best garbs but also in their well-worn home clothes. The book brings together 105 brief chapters that describe how these people saw themselves, how they fought and made peace, how they fell in love and got married, how unwavering they were in the defense of their rights in court. Last not least, these essays explore whether the Ukrainian elites were mere extras and viewers in history or its active makers, resolute and strong in their insistence on defending and expanding their rights and freedoms.
