Beide, Sarah hier und ihr Cousin dort, sehen tiefbewegt von schmerzhaften, schuldbeladenen und selbstzweiflerischen Erinnerungen an ein geteiltes Schicksal ihrem ersten Wiedersehen seit 35 Jahren entgegen. Der Schrecken in ihrer Vergangenheit, durch den ihnen auch ein »Mehr an Leben verliehen worden war«, ist datierbar auf den 16. Juli des zweiten Invasionsjahres, als sie die Deportation ihrer Eltern und Geschwister überlebten: die neunjährige Sarah auf der Straße, weil ihre Mutter sie zum Einkaufen schickte, kurz bevor die Familie abgeholt wurde; der drei Jahre ältere Cousin im Wandschrank, in den ihn seine Mutter stieß, als die Soldaten kamen. Auf dem Land versteckt, überlebten Sarah und ihr Cousin, fanden sich nach dem Krieg wieder, bevor sich ihre Wege trennten. Er emigrierte nach Amerika und wurde ein berühmter Bildhauer, sie, weil ihr das Visum wegen einer Krankheit verweigert wurde, wanderte aus, um in einem Kibbuz mitzuhelfen, ein neues jüdisches Land und Leben aufzubauen.Das ist die Geschichte, die Raymond Lederman erzählt - oder genauer: er denkt nach über diese Geschichte, die in »betrifft: Sarahs Cousin« aus nichts anderem besteht als den melancholisch-heiteren Spekulationen über Form und Möglichkeiten, diese Überlebensgeschichte mitzuteilen.
Für diese im übrigen unveränderte Neuausgabe des artistischen Bestsellers hat Ludwig Harig ein Nachwort Auf dem pataphysischen Hochseil – Zur Übersetzung der ›Stilübungen‹ von Raymond Queneau geschrieben: »Im Jahr 1947 erschien Raymond Queneaus Exercices de Style bei Gallimard in Paris. Die Geschichte ihrer Übersetzung ins Deutsche, eng verknüpft mit dem experimentellen Aufbruch der Nachkriegspoesie, reicht in die fünfziger Jahre zurück. Von Kindheit an mehr spielals lernbesessen, neugierig auf waghalsige Versuche, mißtrauisch gegenüber bewährten Kunstwerken, war ich lüstern nach Neuem … Elisabeth Walther ermutigte mich mit einem Zitat von Francis Ponge: ›Nur die Literatur erlaubt, das große Spiel zu spielen: die Welt neu zu machen‹ –, und darauf hatte ich es mit meinem Freund Eugen Helmlé abgesehen. Risikofreudig, ja todesmutig, wie sich später einige Kritiker ausdrückten, machten wir uns an die Arbeit. Raymond Queneau, geboren 1903 in Le Havre, gestorben 1976 in Paris, hinterließ ein umfangreiches, vielgestaltiges Werk. Von 1924 bis 1929 gehörte er zur Gruppe der Surrealisten, ab 1961 zu der avantgardistischen Literatengruppe »Oulipo«. 1938 wurde er Lektor des Verlags Gallimard. 1948 veröffentlichte er den Roman Heiliger Bimbam (BS 951), 1958 Zazie in der Metro (suhrkamp taschenbuch 3474), den Roman, der ihn, spätestens mit der Verfilmung durch Louis Malle, berühmt machte.

Local government today provides a comprehensive analysis of the structure, finance, management and democratic framework for local government in Britain.
