        Chesstomb

        by John Ethan Py

A marketing strategy like "Blair Witch" with false documents and website   1922, Howard Phillips Lovecraft writes one of his most uncanny short stories: Herbert West, Reanimator. 2001, the murder of a family throws the city of Chesstomb deep into mourning. Recognised reporter Shelby Williams comes to investigate. Collecting a large amount of data, he slowly travels back through time. Until this darkly famous year of 1922, when a quarrel between doctors found its tragic end. Strangest of all, everything suggests that Lovecraft’s character, Hebert West, is inspired by these grim events.  John Ethan Py succeeded to edit these nearly forgotten documents, thus creating a vertiginous masterpiece where reality and fiction mix up with force...

Access to Research Data in the 21st Century

An Ongoing Dialogue Among Interested Parties: Report of a Workshop

by Science, Technology, and Law Panel; Policy and Global Affairs; National Research Council

In the years since the Shelby Amendment, scientists, industry, and policy makers have struggled over how the public’s new right of access should be applied to scientific data. There is loose agreement that research data should be accessible, but wide disagreement over the “depth†to which the public has such a right. The National Academies’ Science, Technology, and Law Program held a workshop to explore the mounting tensions in the federal regulatory process between the need to provide access to research data and the need to protect the integrity of the research process. The workshop provided a picture of the debate arising from passage of the Shelby Amendment and the resulting OMB revisions of Circular A-110. This report is a summary of the workshop.

        Spiraling Into God

Bonaventure on Grace, Hierarchy , and Holiness

        by Katherine Wrisley Shelby

Spiraling into God: Bonaventure on Grace, Hierarchy, and Holiness offers a systematic account of the Seraphic Doctor’s doctrine of grace across his speculative-academic, mystical, hagiographical, and pastoral texts. It does so by arguing that an account of this kind can only be provided by also attending to his theology of hierarchy, a methodology derived from Bonaventure’s claim in the Major Legend of St. Francis that Francis of Assisi was a “vir hierarchicus,” or hierarchical man. As the book explores in great depth, this appellation relies upon Bonaventure’s reading of a Victorine Dionysian interpreter by the name of Thomas Gallus, whose “angelic anthropology”—or notion of the hierarchical soul—becomes a crucial component within the Seraphic Doctor’s teaching on grace as he interprets the sanctity of St. Francis. Throughout the course of his career, Bonvaenture will define sanctifying grace as a created “inflowing” (influentia) that “hierarchizes” human beings by purifying, illuminating, and perfecting them from within, thus causing them to become a similitude of the Trinity. This book explains what this means and why it matters. Most existing scholarship on this subject in Bonaventure’s thought interprets it as a subtopic with respect to other themes—for example, with respect to his Christology or his Trinitarian theology—rather than taking the time to understand his doctrine of grace in its own right. Alternatively, scholarly treatments of his doctrine of grace will treat it at length, but will only examine the topic as it appears in his more speculative-academic texts—most especially his Commentary on the Sentences or his famous Itinerarium Mentis in Deum—without bringing these into conversation with his pastoral works, sermon literature, or hagiographical texts. This book provides the first unified treatment of Bonaventure’s doctrine of grace across all these different genres of his known corpus, and in so doing, fills a massive lacuna in both Bonaventurean scholarship and in the field of medieval historical theology.

Gone: A Photographic Plea for Preservation

        by Nell Dickerson

Photographer and architect Nell Dickerson began her exploration of antebellum homesteads with encouragement from her cousin-in-law renowned Civil War historian and novelist Shelby Foote. Her passion for forgotten and neglected buildings became a plea for preservation. Gone is a unique pairing of modern photographs and historical novella. In PILLAR OF FIRE, Foote offers a heartbreaking look at one mans loss as Union troops burn his home in the last days of the Civil War. Dickerson shares fascinating and haunting photographs, shining a poignant light on the buildings which survived Sherman's burning rampage across the Confederacy, only to fall victim to neglect, apathy and poverty. From the photographer: The Civil War had been over for exactly ninety years in 1954, when my cousin, Shelby Foote, published--PILLAR OF FIRE--as part of his novel, Jordan County: A Landscape in Narrative. The book's stories painted a vivid picture of a fictitious Mississippi county steeped in Southern culture. PILLAR OF FIRE took readers into a heartbreaking and commonplace scene late in the Civil War, when Union troops moved through the civilian South destroying not only plantations but also ordinary homes and cabins. Those troops, battle-hardened and bitter from the loss of their own brethren, take no joy in burning a home in front of its dying, elderly owner and his frail servants. The cruelty of the circumstances is as much a given for them as the dying man's grief over all the memories that burn with his house. Now, on the eve of the Civil War's 150th commemoration, my mission is to draw attention not only to the architectural heritage devastated by the war but also the heritage we've lost since then: to neglect, to poverty, and to shame, as the war's infamy colored the attitudes of later generations and tainted the homes those generations inherited. What the war didn't take, time and apathy did. And yet those grand old homes whether mansion or cabin deserve our reverence and protection.

It illustrates the powerful ways these forces structure and animate not only how first-generation Filipino Americans think and feel about their community, but how they are compelled to engage it over issues deemed important to the sanctity of the family.

        ‘BRIGADISTAS’

        LIVES FOR LIBERTY.

        by Jordi Martí-Rueda

Fanny Schoonhey was said to be the bravest woman in Barcelona. Felicia Browne decided it was time to put down her paintbrushes for the gun. The Nielsen brothers took three bicycles and pedalled all the way from Copenhagen to the Pyrenees. Penny Phelps, a nurse, was worried about the wine in a fur vessel that had been shared by many and was about to be handed to her. During the Spanish Civil War something extraordinary happened. Thousands of men and women from all over the world left their families and jobs to cross borders to fight fascism in the Iberian peninsula. History had never seen a wave of solidarity like this and it has not been seen since.  ‘Brigadistas’ gives us 60 stories on those who took part in the International Brigades. They could be fictional material but the tales are real. And they tell us how during the epic events of the Civil War people loved, dared, and were scared. They wanted to cry and even laugh. Keeping their memories alive is more necessary than ever.
