Phil is a cheerful frog who is very happy with his life. He has days, though, when nothing goes right: his mother scolds him for being careless, his teacher is cross because he won’t sit still, and his best friend is angry because he has annoyed her. On days like this, his mother grumbles and says that Phil must have “ants in his pants” again. It seems to Phil that sometimes there is a creature inside him that holds his ears shut and tosses words out of his mouth, making him hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive. He decides to tell his mother this. To his surprise, she isn’t cross with him, but understands him and gets on the phone to all sorts of people. Eventually she tells him that they will soon be going to see a specialist. The specialist teaches him lots of tricks that he can use to deal with his “creature,” and Phil is relieved. Target Group: Parents and therapists of children between the ages of 7 and 10; children who have been diagnosed with ADHD or are about to be assessed for it, children assessed as being below the threshold for a diagnosis of ADHD but need support in dealing with ADHD symptoms.

Rebellion and repression in Italy, 1972–77

In the mid-1970s, a long wave of contentious radicalism swept through Italy. 'Proletarian youth', 'metropolitan Indians', 'the area of Autonomy': a shifting galaxy of groups and movements practised new forms of activism. Factories and universities were occupied; rent and utility payments were withheld; neo-Fascists and drug pushers were attacked on sight. The movements were at once creative and brutal, intransigent and playful. A particular target for mockery was the parliamentary Left, and above all the Italian Communist Party (PCI). An earlier wave of radical activism had culminated in the Hot Autumn of 1969; then, the PCI had managed to 'ride the tiger' of industrial militancy, emerging with its credibility enhanced. Now, however, the PCI was committed to compromise with the ruling Christian Democrats. The second cycle of contention thus ended in a hostile engagement: rather than adopt their policies, the PCI labelled the movements Fascists, criminals and hooligans. By the end of 1977 the movements were broken, while the PCI had moved sharply to the Right. The main beneficiaries were left-wing 'armed struggle' groups such as the Red Brigades. Building on Sidney Tarrow's 'cycle of contention' model and drawing on a wide range of Italian materials, Phil Edwards has told the story of a unique and fascinating group of political movements, and of their disastrous engagement with the mainstream Left. As well as shedding light on a neglected period of twentieth century history, this book offers lessons for understanding today's contentious movements ('No Global', 'Black Bloc') and today's 'armed struggle' groups. ;

Friedrich Nietzsche wurde am 15. Oktober 1844 in Röcken bei Lützen als Sohn eines Pastors geboren. Er studierte in Bonn und Leipzig zunächst Sprachwissenschaften und evangelische Theologie, seinen Abschluß machte er jedoch nur in klassischer Philologie. 1868 lernte er Richard Wagner kennen, der sein Denken neben Schopenhauer stark beeinflußte. Einige Jahre später zerbrach die Freundschaft über Nietzsches Geringschätzung der Bayreuther Festspiele. 1869 wurde er auf eine Professur für Altphilologie nach Basel berufen, die er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zehn Jahre später wieder aufgab. Fortan lebte er von seiner Pension und finanzierte davon viele Reisen, u.a. in die Schweiz und nach Italien, auf denen seine wichtigsten philosophischen Werke entstanden. In seinen Hauptwerken sagte Nietzsche den Tod Gottes voraus, beschrieb den Übermenschen, trat für die Umwertung aller Werte ein und prägte somit den Nihilismus. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen Also sprach Zarathustra (1883) und Ecce Homo (1908). In den 1880er Jahren nahmen seine körperlichen und seelischen Leiden zu und gipfelten 1889 in einem Zusammenbruch, von dem er sich nicht mehr erholte. Bis zu seinem Tod am 25. August 1900 in Weimar wurde er von seiner Mutter und seiner Schwester gepflegt. Dieter Borchmeyer, geboren 1941, ist Professor emeritus an der Universität Heidelberg, war Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste und lehrt im Rahmen der Stiftungsdozentur »Heidelberger Vorträge zur Kulturtheorie« weiterhin an der Universität Heidelberg. Borchmeyers Arbeitsfeld ist vor allem die deutsche Literatur vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert und das Musiktheater mit Monographien zu Goethe, Schiller, Mozart, Wagner und Nietzsche. The European or Mediterranean cultivated olive (Olea europaea L., subsp. europaea, var. europaea) is one of the most ancient cultivated fruit tree crops. Today, hundreds of olive varieties are grown to produce high-quality fruit for oil and for table olives consumption. The olive industry has undergone profound innovations in the past 30 years, due to scientific and technical advances, particularly in genomics, breeding, orchard management, mechanization and agro-ecology, although not all these developments are yet available to smaller producers. Olive cultivation has also spread to many countries outside the Mediterranean Basin, where it ihas been traditionally present for over 6,000 years. It is a widely held belief that a climax vegetation of closed forest systems covered the lowlands of Central and Western Europe before humans intervened in prehistoric times to develop agriculture. If this intervention had not taken place, it would still be there and so if left, the grassland vegetation and fields we see today would revert to its natural closed forest state, although with a reduced number of wild species. This book challenges this view, using examples from history, pollen analyses and studies on the ecology of tree and shrub species such as oak and hazel. It tests the hypotheses that the climax vegetation is a closed canopy forest against the alternative one in which species composition and succession of vegetation were governed by herbivores and that the Central and Western European lowlands were covered by a park-like landscape consisting of grasslands, scrub, solitary trees and groves bordered by a mantle and fringe vegetation. Comparative information from North America is also included, because the forests there are commonly regarded as being analogous to the primeval vegetation in Europe. This title is a revised, updated and expanded translation of book published in Dutch.
