        Capitalism in contemporary Iran

Capital accumulation, state formation and geopolitics

        by Kayhan Valadbaygi

By situating Iran within the neoliberal global capitalism and resulting geopolitics, this book traces the patterns of capital accumulation and transformations in class and state formation emanating from it. It shows that Iranian neoliberalisation has brought about two capital fractions, namely the internationally-oriented capital fraction and the military-bonyad complex. It substantiates that the co-existence of these competing class fractions with different accumulation strategies has generated hybrid neoliberalism. The book further demonstrates how this new class formation has reorganised the function and operation of state institutions and transformed state ideology. By documenting the ways in which Iranian neoliberalisation has reshaped the subaltern classes and formed Iran's volatile foreign policy, it also provides a novel account of major events and processes in contemporary Iran, such as the post-2017 wave of uprisings, the nuclear programme and international sanctions.

        THE POET OF MIRRORS

        Bee’del of Delhi

        by Vraje Abrahim

Mirza Abdolqader Azimabadi—penname “Bee’del”— was born in Putna, India in 1644 CE and died in Delhi in 1721. He spoke Bengali, wrote poetry in Persian (Farsi), and was familiar with Arabic, Urdu, Bengali and Sanskrit. One of the most prolific and regarded poets of his day, his style is considered the glory of Persian poetry of Central Asian/Indian origin. Among many ethnic groups outside the present borders of Iran, whose culture/mysticism and literature is influenced by the Iranian culture and language, Bee’del is classified alongside Ha’fez—an honor conferred on very few. As he became familiar with the teachings of the Sufis, he continued to frequent their gatherings throughout life. Their literature influenced both his work and his growing involvement in things of the spirit. Bee’del’s relevance to our times is obvious—his message is informed by a universal regard for the inner life and potential of humans, regardless of geography, ethnicity or religion. As a Sufi poet, Bee’del urges us to attend to our most important task—experiencing, as opposed to reading/hearing about, one’s inner Origin/Essence—and thus realize the true purpose of our existence.

Britain and the formation of the Gulf States

        Embers of empire

by Shohei Sato, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie

This book offers new insight into the end of the British Empire in the Middle East. It takes a fresh look at the relationship between Britain and the Gulf rulers at the height of the British Empire, and how its effects are still felt internationally today. Over the last four decades, the Persian Gulf region has gone through oil shocks, wars and political changes, and yet the basic entities of the southern Gulf states have remained largely in place. Drawing on extensive multi-archival research in the British, American and Gulf archives, this book illuminates a series of negotiations between British diplomats and the Gulf rulers that inadvertently led Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE to take their current shapes. The story addresses the crucial question of self-determination versus 'better together', a dilemma pertinent to anyone interested in the transformation of the modern world.

by Noor Azniza Ishak, Jamaludin Mustafa, Kamal Ab Hamid, Siti Rozaina Kamsani, Grafik UUM (Illustrator)

Kratom from a Psychosocial Perspective: An Advantage or A Detriment   Kratom leaves have long been used as a traditional vitality drink ingredient for women who have recently given birth. The leaves are boiled, and the resulting water is consumed to restore vitality, as well as to treat gas congestion in the body and relieve back pain. However, the decoction of kratom leaves has been misappropriated and is being sold to the public.   This book is intended as a guide for policymakers, particularly the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), in the formulation of appropriate policies or action plans, as well as the necessary enhancements to the extant prevention programmes. This book also suggests an effective information delivery strategy for addressing the issue of kratom water abuse. In addition, this book was written as a resource for the community to learn about the actual phenomenon of kratom water misappropriation in the community today.

        Flower Embroidery

        by Baoerji.Yuanye

The novel is the first novel of Bauerji Yuanye, with romanticism as the main creative technique, with strong magical realism. The novel tells the protagonist's unique experience in a place called Huahuoxiu in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. An Iranian poet named Zaino formed a partnership with the protagonist and embarked on Don Quixote-style adventures in various corners of the flower embroidery-herders’ homes, restaurants, markets, and King Gesar’s boots. It is both true and illusion, hilarious, it is a more artistically attractive work, which embodies the consistent creative characteristics of Bauerji Yuanye: unrestrained imagination, peculiar conception, broad knowledge and wit and humor.

        The Armenian price of peace

        by Naira Sahakyan

100 years ago, Armenian thought was inspired by European values. First it was socialism, now it is democracy. 100 years ago, and today, the main question remains the same: how to build relations with Russia? At the beginning of the last century, Armenians in the Ottoman, Iranian and Russian empires actively participated in future-oriented ideological discussions. The Caucasian events of 1917 showed the ideological differences of Armenian politicians and intellectuals. The role of the Caucasus was redefined. It was a part of the ancient kingdom of Armenians, therefore the territory of Armenian autonomous existence, and then also the restoration of the state. What were the expectations of the Armenian parties from the tsarist government and then from the Bolshevik government? Why did the fate of Western Armenia divide Armenians into Leninist and Plekhanovian ideological camps? Armenians' ideas about the right to self-determination 100 years ago: what has changed?
