Lewis Carroll wurde als Charles Lutwidge Dodgson am 27. Januar 1832 in Daresbury, England als drittes von elf Kindern und ältester Sohn des Pfarrers Charles Dodgson geboren. Carroll stellte schon als Kind sein mathematisches Interesse unter Beweis, war sehr belesen und verfasste für sich und seine Geschwister kleine Theaterstücke, um so der engen Welt des Pfarrhauses zu entfliehen. Nach unglücklichen Jahren in einer Privatschule begann er 1850 sein Studium in Oxford am College Christ Church und lehrte dort im Anschluss als Tutor Mathematik. Er entdeckte bald seine Leidenschaft für die Fotografie, später widmete er sich zunehmend auch dem Schreiben, das stark von seiner Liebe zur Logik und Mathematik geprägt war. Er fand insbesondere am Entwerfen von fantasievollen Denkaufgaben und Wortspielen großen Gefallen. An der Universität von Oxford lernte er das Mädchen Alice Liddell kennen, die Tochter des Dekans von Christ Church. Sie gilt als Vorlage und Inspirationsquelle für sein 1865 entstandenes, berühmtestes Werk Alice im Wunderland. Der Roman wurde in mehr als 80 Sprachen übersetzt. Er starb am 14. Januar 1898 in Guildford. Christian Enzensberger, geboren 1931 in Nürnberg und verstorben 2009 in München, war Professor für Englische Literaturgeschichte an der Universität München. Er übersetzte zahlreiche Werke aus dem Englischen ins Deutsche.

EXCAVANDO LA CIUDAD DE DAVID – El lugar en el que comenzף la historia de Jerusalיn Las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en los 150 últimos años han identificado a la colina sudoriental de Jerusalén, fuera de las murallas de la Ciudad Vieja, como la Ciudad de David bíblica. El reconocimiento cada vez mayor de que esta colina es efectivamente la parte más antigua de Jerusalén ha llevado a muchos estudiosos a excavarla. Desde las primeras excavaciones hechas por Charles Warren en 1867 hasta el presente, catorce expediciones arqueológicas han trabajado allí, lo que ha hecho que la Ciudad de David sea uno de los sitios más excavados de Israel. Equipos británicos, alemanes, franceses e israelíes han excavado en el lugar bajo cuatro autoridades diferentes: el gobierno otomano, el mandato británico, el gobierno jordano y el israelí y han producido una asombrosa cantidad de información. Algunos de estos restos son de importancia única, entre ellos el túnel de Ezequías, el sistema de túneles conocido como el pozo de Warren, la inscripción del túnel de Siloé, la inscripción de Teodoto, y el estanque de Siloé. Die Fragilität der Dinge, die Bedrohtheit der Existenz und, als ihr Begrenzendes, das Unermeßliche, aus dem Alles aufsteigt, flüchtig aufglänzt, in dem es wieder versinkt – das ist die Erfahrung, aus der heraus Ungaretti nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zu dichten begonnen hat. Sie ist der Grundriß seines Dichtens geblieben.« Mit dieser Ankündigung erschien 1968 Paul Celans übersetzung von Giuseppe Ungarettis La terra promessa (1950) und Il taccuino del vecchio (1960) in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe im Insel Verlag. Nach Ingeborg Bachmanns nur wenige Jahre älterer übersetzung (1961) trug Paul Celans Engagement entscheidend zur besonderen Stellung Giuseppe Ungarettis in Deutschland bei. Celans Übertragung ist in Ungarettis Werk auf besondere Weise eingegangen. In die Originalausgaben der Zyklen hat er, mit Ausnahme weniger eigenständiger Seiten, seine übersetzung hineingeschrieben, den gedruckten Text mit seiner handschriftlichen Arbeit unmittelbar konfrontiert. Den Faksimiles folgen Celans Übertragung nach dem Text der Erstausgabe, sein Briefwechsel mit der Lektorin des Insel Verlages, Anneliese Botond, die ganz unterschiedlich akzentuierten Pressestimmen und ein Nachwort, in dem die Geschichte der Übertragung dokumentiert und Celans übersetzungskonzept analysiert und bewertet wird. Alice findet sich im Traumland wieder. Dort trifft sie auf das weiße Kaninchen, das Alice in seinen unterirdischen Bau führt, um dort nach einer illustrierten Ausgabe von H.C. Artmanns »Frankenstein in Sussex« zu suchen. Im Laufe der Handlung trifft Alice wiederholt auf das Kaninchen, das auch aus anderen literarischen Werken zitiert, sei es von Herman Melville oder E.M. Cioran. Anders als bei Carroll befindet sich diese Alice nicht im Wunderland, sondern in einem tiefen Haus unter der Erde. Dort begegnet sie in verschiedenen Stockwerken den bekannten Schöpfungen Lewis Carrolls: der pfeiferauchenden Raupe, der grinsenden Katze, der Suppenschildkröte und anderen mehr. Wiederholt werden von diesen Kreaturen die Schrecknisse der Kindheit und Jugend angesprochen. Als Alice, im Erdgeschoss des Hauses angekommen, Frankensteins Monster begegnet, erwacht sie aus ihrem schrecklichen Traum.
