Fish Diseases and Disorders, Volume 1: Protozoan and Metazoan Infections

by Edited by Patrick T K Woo

Fish is the principal source of protein for people in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. While most fish are caught from nature, aquaculture or fish farming is now making a significant contribution to total fish production. More intensive conditions of aquaculture often result in a higher incidence of fish diseases and disorders. As in the first edition, the focus of this second edition is on protozoan and metazoan parasites that cause disease in fish. Significant changes to this second edition include the addition of 3 new chapters and 4 of the original chapters have new authors.

        Fish Parasites

        Pathobiology and Protection

by Edited by Patrick T K Woo, Kurt Buchmann.

Focusing on pathobiology and protective strategies against protozoan and metazoan parasites of fish, this book reviews the latest research on important parasites: those that cause financial hardships to the aquaculture industry, have been introduced to new geographical regions through transportation of infected fish, are pathogenic to groups of finfish and detrimental to production, are highly adaptable and not host-specific with worldwide distributions, and that may serve as disease models for studies on other pathogens. It also highlights gaps in the knowledge to help direct future research.

Wittgenstein im Kontext der analytischen Philosophie

by Peter M. S. Hacker, Peter M. S. Hacker, Joachim Schulte

        Exhibiting the Empire

Cultures of display and the British Empire

by John McAleer, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie, John M. MacKenzie

Exhibiting the empire considers how a whole range of cultural products - from paintings, prints, photographs, panoramas and 'popular' texts to ephemera, newspapers and the press, theatre and music, exhibitions, institutions and architecture - were used to record, celebrate and question the development of the British Empire. It represents a significant and original contribution to our understanding of the relationship between culture and empire. Written by leading scholars from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, individual chapters bring fresh perspectives to the interpretation of media, material culture and display, and their interaction with history. Taken together, this collection suggests that the history of empire needs to be, in part at least, a history of display and of reception. This book will be essential reading for scholars and students interested in British history, the history of empire, art history and the history of museums and collecting.

        The souls of white folk

        White settlers in Kenya, 1900s–1920s

by Brett Shadle, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie

Kenya's white settlers have been alternately celebrated and condemned, painted as romantic pioneers or hedonistic bed-hoppers or crude racists. The souls of white folk examines settlers not as caricatures, but as people inhabiting a unique historical moment. It takes seriously - though not uncritically - what settlers said, how they viewed themselves and their world. It argues that the settler soul was composed of a series of interlaced ideas: settlers equated civilisation with a (hard to define) whiteness; they were emotionally enriched through claims to paternalism and trusteeship over Africans; they felt themselves constantly threatened by Africans, by the state, and by the moral failures of other settlers; and they daily enacted their claims to supremacy through rituals of prestige, deference, humiliation and violence. The souls of white folk will appeal to those interested in the histories of Africa, colonialism, and race, and can be appreciated by scholars and students alike.

        Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, Second Edition

        by Patrick G. Guilfoile, Ph.D.

Doctors first used penicillin on a human patient in 1941. Since then, many bacteria have evolved resistance to antibiotics. Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, Second Edition describes pathogens that have become particularly adept at evading a wide range of antibiotics and highlights how scientists continue to strive to develop new treatments and countermeasures to fight this onslaught. Case studies and historical anecdotes are presented to provide context and aid in understanding the problems associated with antibiotic resistance. Various antibiotic-resistance scenarios of the future are outlined, as well as personal strategies individuals can use to reduce the likelihood of infection with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Chapters include: How Antibiotics Kill Bacteria Causes of Antibiotic Resistance Consequence of Antibiotic Resistance Most Dangerous Types of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Strategies to Combat Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Reducing the Risk of Antibiotic-Resistant Infection.

Decentralization and the Social Economics of Development

        Lessons from Kenya

by Edited by Christopher B Barrett, Andrew G Mude, John M Omiti

There has been broad agreement in recent years that decentralization is key in achieving democracy at local level. Examining the successes, failures, possibilities and limitations of efforts across rural Kenya, this book analyses the socioeconomic and institutional prerequisites for successful decentralization, and the role of community groups and producer organizations in reducing poverty and promoting empowerment.Original empirical studies explore the fundamental elements of coherent, inclusive and ultimately effective decentralization, and how these can be applied to efforts across the African continent and beyond.
