The part of the tourism industry which covers events, conventions and meetings is a substantial part of the global economy and provides employment for a very large number of people worldwide. The breakdown of employees in this sector is complex - employees can be full-time, casual labour or part of a volunteer workforce, and events can be as diverse as the Olympic Games and a local meeting. This book examines the role of people who work in events, meetings and conventions by looking at the context in which they work, and presenting theories, perspectives underlying trends of employment in this sector. Leading authors present international examples to further understanding of the concepts involved in people management in tourism events. This book will be an important resource for students and researchers of leisure, tourism and events management.

        by David Crigman

David Crigman's third novel in the trilogy finds the beautiful Naomi Nicholas QC appearing with her adversary, the imposing, bullying and brilliant Ronan Cadogan QC who will use every to win his case. When the headless and mutilated body of Ray Millard, a ruthless and feared player in London's underworld is identified by his girlfriend, the suspect has to be Pal Locke who was set up by Millard for a fourteen year stretch. Just one problem - Locke has been certified dead in Mexico. DI Jake Kemper and Det. Danny Rose arrest two suspects, Susan and Phil Vance and charge them with Ray's murder. While they are certain Vance and Locke are the same person the evidence cannot support this. At the trial, before Mr Justice Bellinger, Naomi Nicholas and Ronan Cadogan are retained to defend the accused while effete womanizer Luther Farlow opens for the prosecution. With long standing enmity between the Judge and Cadogan, the electric tension of the court is further heightened as the case twists and turns when the evidence is revealed. The unexpected outcome grips the reader to the very end. The author, a practising QC brings a long experience of criminal cases to this hugely adsorbing and highly intricate courtroom drama.

        The Contractors

The Story of British Civil Engineering Contractors

by Hugh Ferguson , Mike Chimes (Author)

Fully illustrated in colour, The Contractors, is the first history of the challenges and adventures faced by British civil engineering contractors from their emergence with canal construction in the late-eighteenth century to the present day. Extraordinarily ambitious, largely unrecognised men who built the world’s infrastructure – its roads and railways, canals and bridges, docks and harbours, lighthouses and breakwaters, sea works and flood defences, water supply and irrigation, urban drainage and sewerage, gas works and power stations, and buildings of all shapes and sizes – these contractors took considerable risks, many failed in the process but others thrived and developed into some of the most powerful and influential industrialists of their day. Including profiles of many of the key figures and organisations in the industry through the ages, The Contractors explains what the business is about and where it comes from, sharing with a wider audience the exploits of these adventurers, haracterised by their inspiring leadership, sheer hard work, a strong constitution and perseverance in the face of adversity. Over time, the contractor has changed: from the great Victorian contractors, towering men whose business was their personal affair, through the twentieth century which has seen the rise of the corporate contractor, specialist contractors and the blurring of the distinction between consulting engineers and contractors, to the larger firms of recent years becoming larger through merger and acquisition but, as the examples in this book demonstrate, there is still room for the entrepreneur with vision, leadership and drive to become a highly successful contractor. The Contractors is a compulsory read for all those working in the industry, including civil engineers, those interested in the industry and its impact on the world, and the wider public. Readers will experience the boom of the canal and railway eras, working at home and abroad, the difficulties and opportunities brought by wars, the equipment used and the specialists and sub-contractors of today, fully illustrated with unique material from ICE and the firms themselves. Following the success of The Civil Engineers, Hugh Ferguson BSc(Eng) CEng FICE MCIHT and Mike Chrimes MBE BA MLS MCLIP bring their extensive experience and unique insight and passion to civil engineering contractors.

Their aim is to observe and document - to try and find the answers to many of History's unanswered questions...and not to die in the process. But one wrong move and History will fight back - to the death. And, as they soon discover - it's not just History they're fighting.Follow the catastrophe curve from eleventh-century London to World War I, and from the Cretaceous Period to the destruction of the Great Library at Alexandria. by Various artists : Doug Headline, Emmanuel Civiello, Robert E. Howard, Mathieu Gabella, Anthony Jean, Virginie Augustin, Julien Blondel, Valentin Sécher, Luc Brunschwig, Etienne Le Roux, Robin Recht, Patrice Louinet, Paolo Martinello, Jean-David Morvan, Pierre Alary, Sedyas, Vincent Brugeas, Ronan Toulhoat, Doug Headline, Emmanuel Civiello, Sylvain Runberg, Park Jae Kwang, Guillaume Mautalent, Marc-Antoine Boidin, Régis Hautière, Olivier Vatine, Didier Cassegrain, Gess, Jean-Luc Istin, Éric Hérenguel, Thimothée Montaigne, Christophe Bec, Stevan Subic.

The story begins when a lovely female named Olivia, having fled captivity from the city of Akif, is chased down and cornered in a marsh, on the edge of the Vilayet Sea. Her pursuer and former master is a sadistic rogue named Shah Amurath. But before he can lay hands on her, a figure rises from the reeds. The newcomer saw all of his friends betrayed and treacherously cut down, before he managed to escape into the marshes where he has been hiding for so long he has nearly gone mad. The newcomer quickly dispatches Shah Amurath, then he and Olivia hop in a boat and decide to lie low for a little while. Only then does the newcomer identify himself: Conan the Cimmerian. They find their way to a dark and apparently deserted island, where they spend the night sleeping in ancient ruins decorated with remarkably lifelike statues. Olivia has a dream in which she sees a band of men turned into those statues and wakes convinced they will come to life in the moonlight. Conan is less than convinced of Olivia's fears; he is more concerned by what is lurking on the jungle lobbing giant boulders at the two fugitives.
