        Richard Brome was the leading comic playwright of 1630s London. Starting his career as a manservant to Ben Jonson, he wrote a string of highly successful comedies which were influential in British theatre long after Brome's own playwriting career was cut short by the closure of the theatres in 1642. This book offers the first full-length chronological account of Brome's life and works, drawing on a wide range of recently rediscovered manuscript sources. It traces the early hostility to Brome from those who wrote him off as a mere servant; his continuing struggles with plague closures, contract disputes and theatrical takeover bids; and his literary relationships with Jonson, Shakespeare and others. Each of the surviving plays is discussed in relation to its social and political context, and its sense of place. A final chapter reviews Brome's enduring stageworthiness into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the most recent Brome revivals. ;

Thomas Brasch, Dichter, Dramatiker, Filmschaffender und Übersetzer, eine der markantesten Figuren der neuen deutschen Literatur, wurde 1945 in Westow/Yorkshire (England) als Sohn jüdischer Emigranten geboren. Bis zu dem Jahr, in dem er die DDR verließ (1976), lebte er in Ostberlin. 1977 erschien sein bekanntestes Buch, der Erzählband Vor den Vätern sterben die Söhne. 2001 ist er in Berlin gestorben.

        Land and labour provides the first full-length history of the Potters' Emigration Society, the controversial trade union scheme designed to solve the problems of surplus labour by changing workers into farmers on land acquired in frontier Wisconsin. The book is based on intensive research into British and American newspapers, passenger lists, census, manuscript, and genealogical sources. After tracing the scheme's industrial origins and founding in the Potteries, it examines the migration and settlement process, expansion to other trades and areas, and finally the circumstances that led to its demise in 1851. Despite the Society's failure, the history offers unique insight into working-class dreams of landed independence in the American West and into the complex and contingent character of nineteenth-century emigration.

Richard McKay Rorty wird am 4. Oktober 1931 in New York City geboren und kommt früh mit im weitesten Sinne linken und progressiven Ideen in Berührung. Im Alter von 14 Jahren beginnt er ein Philosophiestudium in Chicago, 1956 promoviert er an der Yale University. Von 1958 bis 1961 ist Rorty Assistant Professor am Wellesley College, danach hat er bis 1982 eine Professur für analytische Philosophie an der Princeton University inne. 1979 erscheint sein bekanntestes Werk, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (dt. Der Spiegel der Natur), in dem er zahlreiche klassische Fragen der Philosophie einer scharfen Kritik unterzieht; zugleich wendet er sich verstärkt kulturellen und politischen Fragen zu. Als Konsequenz dieser Kehrtwende verlässt Rorty 1982 Princeton und geht als Kenan Professor of the Humanities an die University of Virginia, ab 1998 schließlich lehrt er Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Stanford University. Am 8. Juni 2007 stirbt Richard Rorty in Palo Alto, Kalifornien.

        This anonymous manuscript play has long been the subject of scholarly dispute regarding its relationship with Shakespeare's Richard II. This edition, which thoroughly re-examines the text, situates the play within its historical and political context, relating it to the genre of chronicle drama to which it belongs. The manuscript is of particular interest in that it appears to have been used in the playhouse over a considerable period of time and contains what seems to be evidence of the theatre practice of the time. The play is also of special interest for its skilful and original handling of source material which may well have influenced Shakespeare's Richard II. The extensive appendices drawn from Holinshed, Grafton and Stow provide the reader with the opportunity to investigate the manner in which the dramatist has shaped the material. The editors argue for the play's stage-worthiness and dramatic complexity, suggesting that its range both of dramatic tone and social inclusiveness indicate the work of a dramatist of considerable skill and subtlety, equal or superior to the Shakespeare of the Henry VI plays. ;
