Eine Abhandlung zur Philosophie des Geistes

Nach seinen sprachphilosophischen Arbeiten ('Sprechakte', stw 458; 'Ausdruck und Bedeutung', stw 349) hat John R. Searle mit 'Intentionalität' eine Untersuchung zu einem Kernstück der Philosophie des Geistes vorgelegt, die in einem engen thematischen Zusammenhang mit den früheren Arbeiten steht. Intentionalität ist nach Searles Auffassung die Basis sprachlicher Bedeutung. In seiner Theorie der Intentionalität geht es um die begrifflichen Eigenschaften intentionaler Zustände (auf die Frage nach ihrem ontologischen Status geht er ausführlicher ein in 'Geist, Hirn und Wissenschaft', stw 591). Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund der Untersuchung: die Logik der Repräsentation und der Kausalität intentionaler Zustände. Doch Searle entwickelt in dieser Arbeit nicht nur eine Theorie der Intentionalität und des Zusammenhangs zwischen sprachlichem und geistigem Inhalt. In einem vornehmlich kritischen Teil setzt er sich ausführlich mit konkurrierenden Auffassungen aus dem Bereich der analytischen Philosophie auseinander, insbesondere mit derzeit sehr einflußreichen 'nicht-deskriptivistischen' Theorien des Bezugs, wie sie von S. Kripke, H. Putnam, K. Donnellan, T. Burge und D. Kaplan vertreten und angeregt wurden.

This analysis of the whole sequence of Robin Hood adventures begins with the medieval tradition, from early poems into the long-surviving sung ballads, and goes on to look at two variant Robins: the Scottish version, here named Rabbie Hood, and gentrified Robin, the exiled Earl of Huntington, now partnered by Lady Marian. The nineteenth century re-imagined medieval Robin as modern, a lover of nature, Marian, England and the rights of the ordinary man. In novels and especially films he has developed into an international figure of freedom, while Marian's role has grown in a modern feminist context. Even to this day, the Robin Hood myth continues to reproduce itself, constantly discovering new forms and new meanings.

Its 11 essays show how early modern writing intertwines diverse myths and plays with variant versions of individual myths that derive from multiple classical sources, as well as medieval, Tudor and early modern retellings and translations. Works discussed include poems and plays by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and others. Essays concentrate on specific plays including The Merchant of Venice and Dido Queen of Carthage, tracing interactions between myths, chronicles, the Bible and contemporary genres. Mythological figures are considered to demonstrate how the weaving together of sources deconstructs gendered representations. Kull stammenden illuminierten Kupfer wurden der 1819 in Zürich erschienenen »Beschreibung und Abbildung der künstlichen Nester und Eier der Vögel, welche in der Schweiz, in Deutschland und in den angränzenden Ländern brüten« von H. R. Schinz entnommen.Das sehr schöne kleine Buch zeigt den jeweiligen Vogel bei seinem kunstvollen Nestbau: Zaunkönig, Rotkehlchen, Weidenlaubsänger, Schwanzmeise, Goldhähnchen, Samtköpfchen, Gartengrasmücke, Sumpfrohrsänger und viele mehr. So vielfältig die Vogelgestalten, so verschiedenartig sind auch die Formen der Nester, die gebaut und hier vorgezeigt werden. »Der Vogel baut sein Nest nicht bewußt nach dem Muster seiner eigenen Wiege oder nach Anleitungen seiner Artgenossen. Brüten wir künstlich einen Vogel aus und ziehen ihn so auf, daß er niemals ein Vogelnest zu sehen bekommt, so wird er doch, wenn seine Zeit naht, eine Brutstätte bauen, die sich in nichts von denen seiner Sippe unterscheidet. Die größten Nestbaukünstler finden wir unter unseren Singvögeln. Sie zeigen uns die höchste Meisterschaft tierischer Baukunst überhaupt. Es ist so, als wolle die Natur ihre Geschöpfe noch übertreffen.«

Brink's provocative biography shows that Spenser was not the would-be court poet whom Karl Marx's described as 'Elizabeth's arse-kissing poet'. In this readable and informative account, Spenser is depicted as the protégé of a circle of London clergymen, who expected him to take holy orders. Brink shows that the young Spenser was known to Alexander Nowell, author of Nowell's Catechism and Dean of St. Paul's. Significantly revising the received biography, Brink argues that that it was Harvey alone who orchestrated Familiar Letters (1580). He used this correspondence to further his career and invented the portrait of Spenser as his admiring disciple. Contextualising Spenser's life by comparisons with Shakespeare and Sir Walter Ralegh, Brink shows that Spenser shared with Sir Philip Sidney an allegiance to the early modern chivalric code. His departure for Ireland was a high point, not an exile.
