View Rights PortalThe Book of Souls A "Dorian Gray" story about the power of imagesFor generations, Elsie's family has owned a photography studio. Elsie loves the old cameras and the historic photographs; she is particularly taken with the portrait of the young lord Aidan Storm. Every now and then, she even tells the picture about her worries. What she doesn't know is that he can actually hear her. When Aidan's photo disappears from the album one day, Elsie is inconsolable. But then the young lord suddenly reappears. On Instagram, of all places - and then she meets him in real life.Aidan Storm was born in 1873 and there is a centuries-old curse on his family. With every newborn, a new ghost is born into the world. Aidan sets out to break the curse and recapture the spirits, using the new technology of photography to help him. Until Aidan himself gets captured in a photo that is found 120 years later by John's great-great-granddaughter Elsie. But who has summoned Aidan and the other ghosts that suddenly haunt modern Edinburgh back to reality? And why?Told in two time levels, the story alternates between the perspective of Elsie in modern-day Edinburgh and Aidan at the end of the 19th century. Like in Emma and the Forgotten Book, Mechthild Gläser takes inspiration from a 19th-century classic and brings the portrait of a young man quickly to life, in a modern-day story about the power of images. • Urban fantasy story combined with a tender, humorous love story• The Picture of Dorian Gray meets Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children• Set in picturesque Edinburgh • By internationally successful Mechthild Gläser (SERAPH Fantasy Award), who has been published in 14 languages
City of Betrayals and Shadows (Eisenheim Dilogy, Vol. 1)Flora is devastated when she learns that her soul has been living a double life at night time for quite a while, in a secret town called Eisenheim. From now on, she will never be able to sleep again without her mind wandering in this drab shadow world. As if that were not enough, her soul has apparently stolen the white lion, a powerful alchemical stone, which the rulers of the shadow world are not alone in coveting. In the real world, Flora is now no longer secure from the peril in Eisenheim, and one thing is clear: she can’t trust anyone, not even Marian, who suddenly starts appearing in both worlds, and whose kisses seem to have rather more familiar taste than she likes. As a princess in this shadowy world, Flora is deeply concerned. Is she responsible for the destruction of the city? Eisenheim’s stone of destiny lies hidden deep within the ground and it is calling to her; Flora soon realises that her fate and that of the stone are linked; it is only when she has solved the mystery of their common origin that she will be able to save Eisenheim and rejoin Marian, the boy she loves.Sparkling with originality, excitement and tempo - with a series of astonishing twists and a brilliant eye for detail, Mechthild Gläser tells her tale about Flora and Marian wonderfully entertaining, a complex dilogy that is filled with unforgettable figures. An entrancing love story that takes readers into an original fantasy world, inviting them to dream.• SERAPH Fantasy Award: Best Debut• Refreshing genre mix of urban fantasy, Steampunk elements and romantic comedy• Published in 14 languages: Internationally successful author
A dance among the ruins: Harald Jähner’s major new portrait of Germany’s post-war societyCountless former soldiers drift through the towns and cities; countless children grow up without a father. The old order has been destroyed and although the streets seem eerily empty, the traditional annual street carnivals are soon back in full swing, jazz can be heard among the ruins, intellectuals rekindle a culture of discussion and debate.Harald Jähner’s book is the first history of Germany’s national mentality in the immediate post-war period. It focusses on the German people in all their diversity: the “re-educators” Alfred Döblin and Rudolf Herrnstadt, who tried in two different zones of occupation to win the trust of their fellow Germans; Beate Uhse, owner of a mail order company for “marital hygiene”, who questioned the old moral code governing what was deemed proper; the many nameless black market traders, pockets stuffed with Lucky Strike cigarettes; stylish housewives sitting at kidney-shaped coffee tables that were to become emblematic for a freer and affordable world. Using major political developments as a backdrop, this book weaves a series of life stories into a nuanced panorama that makes the monumental changes affecting the nation tangible for its readers. 1945 to 1955 was a raw, wild decade poised between two eras, portrayed here as a period that proved decisive for Germany’s future development – and one starkly different to how most Germans imagine it today.
November 1950 in Ayot Saint Lawrence. Harald Mueller, geb. am 18. Mai 1934 in Memel, war u. a. Theaterautor und Dramaturg. Für den Suhrkamp Verlag übersetzte er Werke von Bernard Shaw ins Deutsche. Er starb am 27. Dezember 2021.
Mai 1934 in Memel, war u. a.
