Tropical Moist Forest Silviculture and Management
A History of Success and Failure
by H C Dawkins, Michael S Philip
Silviculture in tropical forests has a long history going back many centuries and active management for timber production began about two hundred years ago. There is therefore a considerable body of evidence regarding both sustainable and destructive forestry practices in these forests, the future of which is the subject of one of the great scientific and public debates of the late twentieth century. Based on fifty years experience by each author and extensive research of the literature, this book provides information, much of which was previously not widely available, on the development of silvicultural systems in tropical moist forest (a broad term which encompasses many forest types). The book begins by tracing the early history and goes on to describe the later, more technical phases and the growth of global exploitation. Examples from many countries are described in detail, considering all aspects including the economic, ecological and social implications. It is the aim of the authors to demonstrate that sustainable timber production in many of these forests is not only possible, but the techniques necessary have been known to foresters for many decades. This book is essential reading for forest managers in the tropics, advanced students and researchers in forestry and ecology concerned with natural resource management and will also be of interest to economists, policy makers and environmentalists

Measuring Trees and Forests
by Michael S Philip
Forest mensuration provides data on aspects of length, mass and time of areas of forest, individual trees or parcels of felled timber. Such quantitative information is vital to sellers, buyers, planners, managers and researchers within forestry. This book is a revision of a successful text originally published in 1983 but written for students in Africa. The new edition is international in scope, and has also been changed and updated to reflect recent advances, particularly with respect to biomass and fodder measurement, sampling with unequal probabilities and growth modelling. The book covers both the theory and practice of forest mensuration and includes a number of worked examples of calculations. It is a basic textbook for students of forestry and will also be of value to practising foresters.

Behavioural Ecology of Parasites
by Edited by Edwin E Lewis, James F Campbell, Michael V K Sukhdeo
Parasites have evolved numerous complex and fascinating ways of interacting with their hosts. The subject attracts the interest of numerous biologists from the perspective of ecology and behavioural biology, as well as from those concerned with more applied aspects of parasitology. However, until now there has been no recent book to synthesize this field. This book, written by leading authorities from the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, provides the most comprehensive coverage of this important topic on the market.

Philosophie der Arbeit
Texte von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart
by Michael S. Aßländer, Bernd Wagner

Manual on Postharvest Handling of Mediterranean Tree Fruits and Nuts
by Carlos H. Crisosto, Gayle M. Crisosto
Postharvest is an important element of getting fresh, high quality fruit to the consumer and technological advances continue to outpace infrastructure. This book provides valuable, up-to-date information on postharvest handling of seven fruit and nut crops: almonds, figs, table grapes, pistachio, persimmon, peach and pomegranate. These crops are of particular importance in the Mediterranean region, but also to those countries that export and import these crops, where intensive economic resources are dedicated to developing information to understand and solve their postharvest problems. Written by a team of internationally-recognised postharvest experts, this manual collates and verifies essential but often difficult to access information on these important crops, pertinent for the World economics that affect agricultural communities. The book - Covers relevant postharvest topics for each crop across the growing, packing, shipping and retail postharvest phases - Has an emphasis on knowledge useful to solve current worldwide industry problems - Includes practical recommendations - Makes available information previously published in other languages This is must-have manual for growers and commodity handlers, cold storage managers, transportation personnel, produce managers and retail handlers, or anyone in the food chain that packs, transports, stores and sells these fruits and nuts.

Dilemmas in Animal Welfare
by Michael C Appleby, Daniel M. Weary, Peter Sandøe
There are many ongoing debates within and about the subject of animal welfare. This book distils some of the major themes of current debate into one volume, edited by internationally known names in the field of animal welfare. Each chapter is written by one or more leading experts who discuss, in an even-handed way, a provocative topic that will be of interest to anyone concerned with animal welfare. Issues covered include tail docking, farm animal production, neutering of feral cats and the need to conserve habitats of native wild animals in the face of threats from non-native species. Chapters address the different values and priorities involved in dealing with these issues, including scientific and more explicit ethical approaches. Each chapter ends with questions for discussion that may help readers to engage with these dilemmas. ; This book distils the major themes of current debate into one volume edited by international experts. Issues covered include tail docking, pet obesity, isolation vs. group aggression, neutering feral cats and the need to conserve wildlife habitats in the face of wild animal overpopulation. ; I: Preface 1: Introduction: values, dilemmas and solutions II: Dilemmas within animal welfare 2: Tales about tails: is the mutilation of animals justifiable in their best interests or ours? 3: Fat companions: understanding the welfare effects of obesity in cats and dogs 4: Welfare and quantity of life III: Animal welfare and social priorities 5: Improving farm animal welfare: is evolution or revolution needed in production systems? 6: Whom should we eat? Why veal can be better for welfare than chicken 7: Public health and animal welfare IV: Animal welfare and conservation 8: Balancing the need for conservation and the welfare of individual animals 9: Value conflicts in feral cat management: trap-neuter-return or trap-euthanize? V: Conceptual dilemmas 10: Alone or together: a risk assessment approach to group housing 11: What is suffering in animals?
