EXCAVANDO LA CIUDAD DE DAVID – El lugar en el que comenzף la historia de Jerusalיn Las investigaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en los 150 últimos años han identificado a la colina sudoriental de Jerusalén, fuera de las murallas de la Ciudad Vieja, como la Ciudad de David bíblica. El reconocimiento cada vez mayor de que esta colina es efectivamente la parte más antigua de Jerusalén ha llevado a muchos estudiosos a excavarla. Desde las primeras excavaciones hechas por Charles Warren en 1867 hasta el presente, catorce expediciones arqueológicas han trabajado allí, lo que ha hecho que la Ciudad de David sea uno de los sitios más excavados de Israel. Equipos británicos, alemanes, franceses e israelíes han excavado en el lugar bajo cuatro autoridades diferentes: el gobierno otomano, el mandato británico, el gobierno jordano y el israelí y han producido una asombrosa cantidad de información. Es gibt keine menschliche Eigenschaft, die älter und fürs Überleben notwendiger ist als die Liebe. Wer liebt, sagt man, ist verkauft mit Haut und Haar. Zugleich ist Liebe, so heißt es in Bizets Carmen, „frei wie ein Vogel“. Wie verschieden ist sie von anderen guten Dingen, von ruhiger Freundlichkeit, unerschütterlicher Ruhe, Vertragstreue und von ausgeglichenen Bilanzen! Auf einem Hochplateau endet dieser Flug, im Herzen des schönsten Liebesromans der nichtsentimentalen Tradition und einem Kardinaltext der Moderne über Beziehungsökonomie: der Princesse de Clèves der Madame de La Fayette. Mit einer DVD - Nachrichten vom Tausendfüßler. 21 unveröffentlichte Filme Länge: 158 Minuten Liebe baut ihre Gärten und Nester in den Formen der poetischen Kraft: Mit Hilfe von Büchern, von Filmen und Musikstücken. Im goldenen Herbst des Jahres 2012 stand »Die Welt« für einen Tag still, und als Sinnbild des Stillstands lag dort ein schläfriger Hund, wo sonst die Schlagzeilen drohen. Was war geschehen? Gerhard Richter, einer der global maßgeblichen Künstler, hatte die Herrschaft ergriffen und allen 30 Seiten der »Welt«-Ausgabe vom 5. Oktober 2012 seinen Handstempel aufgedrückt: Bilder von ruhigen Momenten in unruhigen Zeiten, Aufhebung des politischen Primats, Privates statt Welthistorisches, vor allem aber: kunstvolle Kontraste zwischen Schärfe und Unschärfe. Bei der öffentlichen Vorstellung dieser ungewöhnlichen Kunstaktion hielt Alexander Kluge die Laudatio. Spontan begleitete er die Fotos mit Geschichten. Gerhard Richter antwortete darauf ebenso spontan mit dem Vorschlag eines gemeinsamen Buches. Richter lieferte weitere Bilder und Kluge weitere Geschichten. So entstand nach dem Erfolgsbuch »Dezember« eine zweite gemeinsame Arbeit der beiden im Februar 1932 geborenen Künstler: ein Buch zur zeitgleich durchlebten Geschichte, so scharf wie unscharf gesehen.

Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. EXCAVATING THE CITY OF DAVID

Archaeological research over the past 150 years has identified Jerusalem’s southeastern hill, outside the Old City walls, as the biblical City of David. The growing realization that this hill is indeed the most ancient part of Jerusalem led many scholars to excavate it. Since the first excavation by Charles Warren in 1867 to the present, fourteen archaeological expeditions have dug here, making the City of David hill one of the most excavated sites in Israel. British, German, French, and Israeli teams have dug here under four different governments (Ottoman, British Mandate, Jordanian, and Israeli), producing an impressive quantity of data. Some of these remains are uniquely important, including the Siloam Tunnel, the Warren’s Shaft system, the Siloam Inscription, the Theodotos Inscription, and the Pool of Siloam. Recent excavations at the City of David have uncovered impressive remains of Middle Bronze Age fortifications around the Gihon Spring and remains of the Siloam Pool dating to the Second Temple period. The Siloam Tunnel has now been thoroughly documented and studied. This book begins with a chronological survey of a century and a half of excavation and study of the City of David hill. It then summarizes the history of the hill, from prehistoric times to the end of the Ottoman period. It presents an up-to-date summary of past and recent archaeological discoveries, many of which, presented here for the first time, have dramatically changed our thinking about Jerusalem’s ancient history. Ronny Reich has been excavating and studying Jerusalem’s antiquities for over forty years. From 1969 to 1978 he participated in the excavations directed by Professor Nahman Avigad in Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter. Since 1995 he has been co-director of the City of David Excavations. Professor Reich is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Jewish ritual baths in the Second Temple period. Since 1995 he has been a professor of archaeology at the University of Haifa.
