        Conflict, Politics and Proselytism

        Methodist missionaries in colonial and postcolonial Burma, 1887–1966

        by Michael D. Leigh, Andrew Thompson, John Mackenzie

        This book is a study of the ambitions, activities and achievements of Methodist missionaries in northern Burma from 1887-1966 and the expulsion of the last missionaries by Ne Win. The story is told through painstaking original research in archives which contain thousands of hitherto unpublished documents and eyewitness accounts meticulously recorded by the Methodist missionaries. This accessible study constitutes a significant contribution to a very little-known area of missionary history. Leigh pulls together the themes of conflict, politics and proselytisation in to a fascinating study of great breadth. The historical nuances of the relationship between religion and governance in Burma are traced in an accessible style. This book will appeal to those teaching or studying colonial and postcolonial history, Burmese politics, and the history of missionary work. ;

        Chronotopos

        by Michail M. Bachtin, Michael Dewey, Michael C. Frank, Kirsten Mahlke

        Als Michail M. Bachtins 1973 beendeter Essay zum Chronotopos erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung erschien, stand die Bachtin-Rezeption hierzulande ganz im Zeichen von Karnevalismus, Polyphonie und Dialogizität. Der Vorschlag des Autors, die Kategorie des Raums in der Romananalyse stärker zu gewichten, stieß auf vergleichsweise geringes Interesse. Aus heutiger Perspektive erweist sich sein Hinweis auf die untrennbare Einheit von Raum und Zeit im Roman als früher Beitrag zu einer Theorieentwicklung, die gegenwärtig als der spatial turn diskutiert wird. Die Wiederauflage des vergriffenen Essays Formen der Zeit und des Chronotopos im Roman mit einem Nachwort, das Bachtins »Raumzeit« theoriegeschichtlich kontextualisiert, möchte Anschlußmöglichkeiten für die aktuellen Raumdebatten in den Geschichts-, Sozial- und Literaturwissenschaften eröffnen.

        by Uwe Gröber and Prof. Dr. Michael F. Holick

        Vitamin D deficiency is a global health problem that puts the quality of life and life expectancy of more than a billion children and adults at risk worldwide. Here, the reader can discover how vitamin D successfully protects against diseases, improves the quality of life and optimises medication and treatment!
