Auteurism from Assayas to Ozon

Auteurism - the idea that a director of a film is its source of meaning and should retain creative control over the finished product - has been one of film studies' most important paradigms ever since the French New Wave of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and the adoption of the term auteur by Andrew Sarris. Through the popular, controversial and critically acclaimed films of Olivier Assayas, Jacques Audiard, the Dardenne borthers, Michael Haneke and Francois Ozon, this book looks into how the meaning of 'auteur' has changed over this half-century, and assesses the current state of Francophone auteur cinema. It combines French philosophical and sociological approaches with methodologies from the Anglo-American fields of gender studies, queer theory and postmodernism. This volume will be of interest to researchers and students of film studies, European cinema and French and Francophone studies, as well as to film enthusiasts.

Der Band enthält zwei Studien: »Die existenzdialektische Grundvoraussetzung der Verzweiflungsanalyse Kierkegaards« und »Zur transzendierenden Kritik der Verzweiflungsanalyse Kierkegaards« sowie eine zusammenfassende Schlußbetrachtung »Dialektik in der Krankheit zum Tode«. Der Titel dieses Bandes »Der Begriff der Verzweiflung« spielt nicht nur auf Kierkegaards Angstabhandlung an; vor allem will er signalisieren, daß Michael Theunissen analytisch an Kierkegaards Die Krankheit zum Tode herangeht. Eine derartige Herangehensweise steht nicht nur im Widerspruch zum Selbstverständnis Kierkegaards, sie kollidiert auch mit der gegenwärtig vorherrschenden Art des Umgangs mit ihm. In einer Zeit, in der die Tendenz sich ausbreitet, den Unterschied von Philosophie und Literatur, von Argumentation und Rhetorik einzuebnen, muß ein Autor wie Kierkegaard, der untrennbar Denker und Dichter war, ein neues Interesse auf sich lenken. Was heute vornehmlich interessiert, sind genau die Mitteilungsformen, von denen Theunissens Studien abstrahieren. Sie folgen nicht der Mode, die Formen von den Inhalten abzulösen und diesen die Aufmerksamkeit zu entziehen, die man jenen widmet, denn die daraus resultierende Unverbindlichkeit betrügt Kierkegaard um sein Bestes, um seinen Ernst. Beeindruckt von diesem Ernst, über den Theunissen schon als 22jähriger seine Dissertation geschrieben hat, fühlt er sich dazu herausgefordert, an der Leichtfertigkeit der Literaten ein Korrektiv anzubringen. Michael Theunissen ist Professor für Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin. Im Suhrkamp Verlag hat er veröffentlicht: Sein und Schein. Symptomatic of this development has been the use by writers, artists, and film-makers of the imagery and aesthetics of pornography, in works which have, often on this basis, achieved considerable international success. Amongst these artists are a number of French authors and directors - such as Michel Houellebecq, Catherine Breillat, Virginie Despentes, or Catherine Millet - whose work has often been dismissed as trashy or exploitative, but whose use of pornographic material may in fact be indicative of important contemporary concerns. In this study of a very significant trend, the authors explore how the reference to pornography encodes diverse political, cultural, and existential questions, including relations between the sexes, the collapse of avant-garde politics, gay sexualities in the time of AIDS, the anti-feminist backlash, the relation to the body and illness, the place of fantasy, and the sexualisation of children. It will be of interest to undergraduates, graduates, and researchers in the fields of French culture, gender, film and media studies.

Als Michael Krüger den Peter-Huchel-Preis erhielt, bemerkte Adolf Muschg über ihn: „Nur der Trivialkünstler findet auf seinem Weg immer den Schuh, den er sich und dem Leser getrost anziehen möchte. Für den Liebhaber der Ehrlichkeit kommt zuviel dazwischen: zwischen Ursache und Folge, Bild und Bedeutung, Ich und Du, Lüge und Wahrheit, Leben und Tod. Von diesen Zwischen-Räumen handeln Krügers Gedichte.“ Und davon, daß niemand weiß, wie die kleinen und großen Fragen letztlich zu beantworten sind - auch wenn man sich ihnen, wie Michael Krüger mit Skepsis und Ironie, stellen muß.
