The World Leisure and Recreation Association (WLRA) held its fourth World Congress in Cardiff, Wales, in July 1996. The overall theme was “Leisure and the Quality of Life In the 21st Century”. At the congress, the Management Commission, the newest of WLRA’s Commissions, attracted 78 papers in the management and access theme, from 16 countries.This book presents edited and revised versions of 18 of the most significant papers from the management section of the congress. The papers are diverse in topic, focus and geography, but demonstrate the vigour and developing nature of management studies in leisure, both of an applied and theoretical nature. Two themes in particular are developed: issues, such as access to leisure services, pressures of visitor numbers on rural areas, and contracting out of services to the private sector; and applications of different theories and approaches to managing leisure resources and customers. Case study material is presented from locations as diverse as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Spain and the UK. Overall, the book will be invaluable as supplementary reading for students of leisure studies and for lecturers, researchers and practitioners in leisure management.

Theories of nature and nurture in Victorian sensation fiction

This book explores the ways in which the two leading sensation authors of the 1860s, Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Wilkie Collins, engaged with nineteenth-century ideas about personality formation and the extent to which it can be influenced either by the subject or by others. Innovative readings of seven sensation novels explore how they employ and challenge Victorian theories of heredity, degeneration, inherent constitution, education, upbringing and social circumstance. Far from presenting a reductive depiction of 'nature' versus 'nurture', Braddon and Collins show the creation of character to be a complex interplay of internal and external factors. Drawing on material ranging from medical textbooks, to sociological treatises, to popular periodicals, Creating character shows how sensation authors situated themselves at the intersections of established and developing, conservative and radical, learned and sensationalist thought about how identity could be made and modified.

Michael Winterbottom has also established himself, and his company, Revolution Films, as a dynamic force in world cinema. No other British director can claim such an impressive body of work in such a variety of genres, from road movie to literary adaptation, from musical to sex film, to stories of contemporary political significance. The authors of this book use a range of critical approaches to analyse the filmmaker's eclectic interests in cinema and the world at large. With this in mind, the realist elements of such films as Welcome to Sarajevo are examined in the light of a long history of cinema's dealings with realism, as far back as post-war Italian neo-realist filmmaking; whereas Jude and The claim are approached as both literary adaptations (a continuing strand in British cinema history) and examples of other reworked genres (the road movie, the western). This anthology aims to challenge stereotypes of women travellers. Rather than simply presenting writings by Victorian women who travelled bravely around the world disregarding social convention and danger, the editors present a range of writing and possible ways of being a woman traveller. As well as the 'eccentric' woman traveller, the editors have included writings by those who might be seen as failed travellers, cautious and conventional travellers and those who did not conform to the adventurous heroine stereotype. Because travelling as a woman and writing as a woman presents the author with a number of textual problems which must be negotiated, Foster and Mills have chosen to include writings which confronted these problems and which resolved them (or did not resolve them) in different ways. These textual problems include the depiction of other women, the representation of spatial relations, the negotiations undertaken in relation to the adventure heroine narrative and character and the position taken by the author in relation to the representation of knowledge. These issues are all crucial in relation to travel writing by women , and the women, whose writing has been collected together in this anthology have made bold decisions in relation to them. ;
