        Graham Swift

        by Daniel Lea, Susan Williams

        This book offers an accessible critical introduction to the work of Graham Swift, one of Britain's most significant contemporary authors. Through detailed readings of his novels and short stories from 'The Sweet Shop Owner' (1980) to 'The Light of Day' (2003), Daniel Lea lucidly addresses the key themes of history, loss, masculinity and ethical redemption, to present a fresh approach to Swift. This study proposes that one of the side-effects of modernity has been the destruction of traditional pathways of self and collective belief, leading to a loss of understanding between individuals about their duties to each other and to society. Swift's writing returns repeatedly to the question of what we can believe in when all the established markers of identity - family, community, gender, profession, history - have become destabilised. Lea suggests that Swift increasingly moves towards a notion of redemption through a lived ethical practice as the only means of finding solace in a world lacking a central symbolic authority. ;

        Die Architektonik der Vernunft

        Zweckmäßigkeit und systematische Einheit in Kants »Kritik der reinen Vernunft«

        by Lea Ypi, Antonia Grunert

        Die Vernunft ist ein vielfältiges Vermögen. Ein vernünftiges Wesen erkennt, wie die Dinge sind; zugleich kann es sich vorstellen, was sein soll, und entsprechend handeln. Wie aber können zwei scheinbar so verschiedene Fähigkeiten – Erkennen und Handeln – als Teile desselben Vermögens begriffen werden? Lea Ypi geht der Einheit der Vernunft in einem oft vernachlässigten Kapitel von Kants Hauptwerk nach: der »Architektonik der reinen Vernunft«. Die Vernunft gleicht hier einem Bauwerk, dem ein Plan zugrunde liegt, der jedem Bestandteil seinen festen Platz zuweist. Doch ihr theoretischer und ihr praktischer Teil werden von einem fragilen Bindeglied zusammengehalten, an dem sich die Stabilität des Ganzen entscheidet. Diesem spürt dieses meisterhafte Buch nach.

        Briefe von einer imaginären Reise

        Roman

        by Lea Goldberg, Lydia Böhmer

        Eine junge Frau, Ruth, flieht im Herbst 1934 vor einer unglücklichen Liebe. Aus Berlin, Köln, Brüssel, Brügge, Ostende, Paris und Marseille schreibt sie an Immanuel, den Mann, den sie mehr liebt als er sie. Doch sie reist nur in der Phantasie in diese Städte, es sind Briefe von einer imaginären Reise. Die Stationen der Reise sind in diesen Schilderungen als reale wie als geistige Orte präsent, Beobachtungen aus dem nazistischen Berlin etwa mischen sich mit Gedanken zur Literatur und Kunst und vielem mehr. Die persönliche Liebesgeschichte verbindet sich mit scharfsichtigen Beschreibungen vom Europa Mitte der dreißiger Jahre – es ist auch der Herbst Europas vor der großen Katastrophe. So sprechen diese Briefe nicht nur von der unglücklichen Liebe Ruths zu Immanuel, sondern auch von der großen unglücklichen Liebe vieler Juden zur europäischen Kultur. Die Gewißheit des notwendigen Abschieds durchzieht diesen poetischen, klugen, melancholischen Roman in Briefen – zuerst veröffentlicht 1936/37, kurz nach Lea Goldbergs Einwanderung ins damalige Palästina.

        The labour movement in Lebanon

        Power on hold

        by Lea Bou Khater

        The labour movement in Lebanon: Power on hold narrates the history of the Lebanese labour movement from the early twentieth century to today. Bou Khater demonstrates that trade unionism in the country has largely been a failure, for reasons including state interference, tactical co-optation, and the strategic use of sectarianism by an oligarchic elite, together with the structural weakness of a service-based laissez-faire economy. Drawing on a vast body of Arabic-language primary sources and difficult-to-access archives, the book's conclusions are significant not only for trade unionism, but also for new forms of workers' organisations and social movements in Lebanon and beyond. The Lebanese case study presented here holds significant implications for the wider Arab world and for comparative studies of labour. This authoritative history of the labour movement in Lebanon is vital reading for scholars of trade unionism, Lebanese politics, and political economy.
