        Chanting of A Swan

Arabic Booker Shortlist & State Incentive Award

        by Mekawi Saeed

The best description of “Taghreeda El-Bagaa (Chanting of A Swan)” novel for the writer Mekawi Saeed is that it is an award-winning novel; as the it won the State Incentive Award and reached the short list of the “Arab Booker” 2008.The novel addresses the political and social circumstances and developments witnessed by Egypt in the recent years prior to 2011 revolution. This is tackled through “Mostafa”, an editor and poet living in downtown, close to different social categories such as downtown intellectuals, foreigners, street children who suffer from their dislodgment and allure to provide their means of subsistence in any way; accordingly, they return the society insults with extreme violence, rebellion and cruelty. The novel includes many personalities which have intersecting life circumstances. Essam, the fine artist, Mostafa’s friend, loses his “Singaporean” beloved, Samantha, and he tries to fall on his feet by following the Sufi groups; accordingly, the novelist likens him to a swan, saying (I was seeing him like a swan in its last days when it was waiting death and heads to the ocean beach, dancing its last dance and enchants its only sad chanting and then dies). As for the “hero” “Mostafa”, he is always haunted by the memory of the death of his beloved “Hend”, who died after her injury with a gun “shell” kept in a museum as a memory of 1973 war. The novelist, in his presentation of the interference of the Wahabi thought in the Egyptian life, introduces the character of Ahmed El-Helw, who was in his youth a leader of the leftist movement during university, then he traveled to Saudi Arabia, and became extremist. Through joining opposition demonstrations in downtown, Mostafa tries to rise his voice against striking children with bombs in Lebanon and against burning intellectuals in Beni Suef. His American friend “Marcha” shared his company. She wanders in downtime holding her camera to shoot a documentary film on street children phenomena, taking her innocent project as a camouflage of her real objective, which is tarnishing Egypt reputation, according to the novelist’s statement! The novel is eventful and presents many cases. Therefore, it was greatly hailed by critics.

      • Award

        by Muhammad Reza Sarshar

The book contains three stories, titled The Gold Watch, The Prize and The Friends, that are narrated for late elementary and early guidance school children. The first story of the book (The Gold Watch) is the story of two friends called Saeed and Sadegh, who are best friends besides being classmates as well. One day, Sadegh goes to Saeed’s home to study and Saeed’s gold watch goes missing. From this moment on, Saeed suspects his friend and feels that he has stolen his watch. At the end of the story, it is revealed that the crow that has made a nest on the top a tree in their yard has stolen Saeed’s watch. The second story (The Prize), also the book’s namesake, is about a teenage boy trying to get the top scores in the sixth grade final exam hoping that his father would buy him a bike; but financial troubles do not allow his father to honor his promise and buy a bicycle for his son. At the end of the story, the boy finds out about his father’s situation and writes a letter to inform his father that he has given up the bicycle idea. The last story of the book (The Friends) tells the story of a teenager named Yunes, who emigrates with his family from Shiraz to Tabriz, where he is confronted with a strange and weird atmosphere while attending the school in that city and almost cannot cope with it. Yunes does not know the language of the Tabriz students who speak Turkish and this fact makes him seek friendship with another student named Mehdi, who is incidentally a Shiraz native and speaks Yunes’s language. Mehdi is an undisciplined student and encourages Younes to skip the school for a few days, but the school children bring Yunes back to the classroom and their friendship becomes deeper, and Yunes gets interested in the school and the new friends. The author, throughout the stories of this book, depicts the mental world of adolescents and educational spaces so skillfully that the reader finds himself right in the middle of the book’s adventures and thus, gets along with the characters and events of these stories.

      • Masoumeh

        by Saeed Nikorazm

Masoumeh is about "waiting" and more about people who understand the existence and meaning of their lives while waiting. Yusuf, who went missing in the war after 7 years, still has no trace of him. Masoumeh Yusef's monument is in the purgatory of staying and leaving, and people who see Masoumeh as a form of Yusuf's memory mean their life in staying or leaving Masoumeh. We do not see Masoumeh, but obviously everything revolves around her, and Masoumeh, who is a manifestation of beauty and ideal perfection, gradually finds an allegorical appearance and becomes an innocence in the body of the people in the play. The lost innocence manifests itself only in the absence. Hence, the play becomes a critical work. Criticism of people who give up on the word waiting and do nothing.Waiting for Yusuf to come is a shop, for some and for others it means a life of emptiness. In the meantime, waiting becomes counter-expectation. The benefit now is that Yusuf does not come, but the wait remains. In other words, Yusuf himself does not want it. Yusuf's absence is demanded, and everyone knows that the basis for waiting is not to come: Yusuf must always be behind the door, but never enter!

      • Intellectual Party

        by Saeed Nikorazm

The publisher, the critic and the writer meet by chance at a party. The war begins. Job, a well-known but poor writer, is trying to sell his last child: a novel. The bread puts the author's concern before the publisher and his social commitment to the critic. The author, critic and publisher represent the three major social discourses, and the author of the play critiques the cultural atmosphere of Iran in the form of these three discourses. It is also in the language of humor. Serious intellectual debates in the form and context of ridiculous and absurd satire that further alienate the writer, publisher, and critic. But in the end, what helps the writer is love. In the maze of intellectual controversy, the author finds his wife and hugs his child, his work, again.
