At Malinc Publishing House we have been publishing quality children's literature since 2012 and have strived for bigger literary diversity throughout. We are concentrated on publishing authors from the Spanish speaking countries and minority literatures' representatives connected with the Spanish culture such as Basque, Catalan and Galician writers. Books of less known literatures from Europe and elsewhere have also been published by Malinc Publishing House. Through the reading promotion projects we put academic knowledge into practice. Besides, we carry out courses for the mentors of reading and organize literary readings and visits of foreign authors. It is in this way that we raise general reading literacy, intercultural and linguistic competences and include vulnerable groups, especially people with dyslexia.

Zwei Leben ist ein höchst anregender und aufschlußreicher, ebenso unterhaltender wie eleganter biographischer Essay über Gertrude Stein und Alice B. Toklas. Unbefangen und respektvoll nähert sich Janet Malcolm ihrem Gegenstand. Während sie den bisher Stein-Fremden Lust auf Werk und Leben der legendenumwobenen Autorin und ihrer Gefährtin macht, hat ihr Buch auch den Kennern Neues mitzuteilen. So erfahren wir zum ersten Mal Genaueres über die Jahre des Zweiten Weltkriegs, die Stein und Toklas als Jüdinnen im nazibesetzten Frankreich verbrachten, nachdem sie sich bewußt gegen eine Rückkehr in die Vereinigten Staaten entschieden hatten. Stein sparte ihr Jüdischsein aus, sie verdrängte es, soweit sie nur konnte, und ließ sich von ihrem antisemitischen Freund Bernard Fay, der Zugang zu den höchsten Kreisen des Vichy-Regimes und zu Pétain selbst hatte, protegieren. Oder: Malcolm berichtet von ihren Gesprächen mit Leon Katz, dem einzigen, der Alice Toklas nach Steins Tod wirklich zum Sprechen brachte - auch über sorgsam Verschwiegenes wie eine unglückliche frühe Liebe Steins, die Eingang nicht nur in ihre Notizbücher, sondern auch in Werke wie The Making of Americans, Drei Leben und Q.E.D. (BS 1055) fand, was Alice Toklas noch viele Jahre später zu rasenden Eifersuchtsanfällen provozierte.

How Britain’s middle classes found their style

In postwar Britain, journalists and politicians prophesised that the class system would not survive a consumer culture where everyone had TVs and washing machines, and where more and more people owned their own homes. They were to be proved entirely wrong. In good taste charts how class culture, rather than being destroyed by mass consumption, was remade from flat-pack furniture, Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle magazines. Novelists, cartoonists and playwrights satirised the tastes of the emerging middle classes, and sociologists claimed that an entire population was suffering from status anxiety, but underneath it all, a world was being constructed out of duvets, quiches and mayonnaise, easy chairs from Habitat, white emulsion paint and ubiquitous well-scrubbed, second-hand pine kitchen tables. This was less a world of symbolic goods and more an intimate environment alive with new feelings and attitudes.

Sam Hanna's visual legacy

Sam Hanna (1903-96), a pioneering filmmaker from Burnley, Lancashire, was dubbed the 'Lowry of filmmaking' by BBC broadcaster Brian Redhead in the 1980s. Balancing Environmental and Social Sustainability

Shifting cultivation supports as many as 300 million people in the Asia-Pacific region alone. Yet Governments often regard it as a primitive and inefficient form of agriculture that destroys forests, causes soil erosion and robs lowland areas of water. These negative perceptions are not supported by research, yet they have been used as a pretext for acts verging on genocide. We must urgently challenge these misconceptions and consider the policy implications. Supported and encouraged, swidden farming has the potential to play a major role in carbon sequestration and conservation of land and biodiversity, as well as retaining a cultural heritage of many thousands of years. This comprehensive analysis of past and present policy highlights successes and failures and emphasizes the importance of getting it right for the future.
