The book contends that attention to talk reveals the relations of domination and subordination in heterogeneous, ethnically diverse and multilingual contexts, while also helping us to understand how transcultural solidarity might be expressed. Drawing on original ethnographic research conducted on licensed and unlicensed market stalls in in heterogeneous, ethnically diverse and multilingual contexts, this book examines the centrality of multilingual talk to everyday struggles about difference, positionality and entitlement. In these street markets, Neapolitan street vendors work alongside documented and undocumented migrants from Bangladesh, China, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal as part of an ambivalent, cooperative and unequal quest to survive and prosper. As austerity, anti-immigration politics and urban regeneration projects encroached upon the possibilities of street vending, talk across linguistic, cultural, national and religious boundaries underpinned the collective action of street vendors struggling to keep their markets open. The edginess of their multilingual organisation offered useful insights into the kinds of imaginaries that will be needed to overcome the politics of borders, nationalism and radical incommunicability.

Sie besteht aus fünf Akten, die später, aus Zensur- und anderen Gründen mehrfach umgearbeitet, auf die beiden Stücke »Erdgeist« und »Die Büchse der Pandora« verteilt wurden. Der Text wurde zum ersten Mal 1988 im Zusammenhang mit der Uraufführung durch Peter Zadek am Deutschen Schauspielhaus in Hamburg veröffentlicht. »Eine Nachtwandlerin der Liebe, die erst ›fällt‹, wenn sie angerufen wird, ewige Verliererin – von der ein philosophischer Strolch im Drama sagt: ›Die kann von der Liebe nicht leben, weil ihr Leben die Liebe ist.‹ Daß der Freudenquell in dieser engen Welt zur Pandora-Büchse werden muß: diesem unendlichen Bedauern scheint mir die Dichtung zu entstammen«, sagte und schrieb Karl Kraus 1905 zu der von ihm organisierten Uraufführung des zweiten Teils in einer einmaligen, geschlossenen Vorstellung in Wien.

The 'Sunningdale experiment' of 1973-4 witnessed the first attempt to establish peace in Northern Ireland through power-sharing. However, its provisions, particularly the cross-border 'Council of Ireland', proved to be a step too far. The experiment floundered amid ongoing paramilitary-led violence, finally collapsing in May 1974 as a result of the Ulster Workers' Council strike. Designed to tackle Britain's strike problem and perceived disorder in collective bargaining, the Industrial Relations Act 1971 established a formal legal framework to counteract trade union power. As the state attempted to disengage from and 'depoliticise' collective bargaining practices, trade union leaders and employers were instructed to discipline industry. In just three-and-a-half years, the Act contributed to a crisis of the British state as industrial unrest engulfed industry and risked undermining the rule of law. Warner explores the power dynamics, strategic errors and industrial battles that destroyed this attempt to tame trade unions and ultimately brought down a government, and that shape Conservative attitudes towards trade unions to this day.
