Die Berichte aus diesem Krieg (1855: Sewastopoler Erzählungen) machten ihn als Schriftsteller früh bekannt. Er bereiste aus pädagogischem Interesse 1857 und 1860/61 westeuropäische Länder und traf dort auf Künstler und Pädagogen.
