        Race, nation and empire

        Making histories, 1750 to the present

        by Catherine Hall, Keith McClelland, Julian Hoppit

        The essays in this collection show how histories written in the past, in different political times, dealt with, considered, or avoided and disavowed Britain's imperial role and issues of difference. Ranging from enlightenment historians to the present, these essays consider both individual historians, including such key figures as E. A. Freeman, G. M. Trevelyan and Keith Hancock, and also broader themes such as the relationship between liberalism, race and historiography and how we might re-think British history in the light of trans-national, trans-imperial and cross-cultural analysis. 'Britishness' and what 'British' history is have become major cultural and political issues in our time. But as these essays demonstrate, there is no single national story: race, empire and difference have pulsed through the writing of British history. The contributors include some of the most distinguished historians writing today: C. A. Bayly, Antoinette Burton, Saul Dubow, Geoff Eley, Theodore Koditschek, Marilyn Lake, John M. MacKenzie, Karen O'Brien, Sonya O. Rose, Bill Schwarz, Kathleen Wilson. ;

        Pre and Probiotics for Poultry Gut Health

        by Helen Masey O'Neill, Emily Burton, Dawn Scholey

        Poultry are the most widely used animal protein source in the world: billions of meat birds are produced globally each year, using 360 million tonnes of feed. Within Europe, over 30,000 companies involved in the production of poultry create an annual turnover of €107 billion. However, maintaining the sustainability of the industry as it moves towards antibiotic-free production is one of the key challenges. Starting with an overview of antibiotics as growth promoters and the challenges faced as the industry moves away from their use, this book then thoroughly considers the potential of pre and probiotic additives in poultry gut health. The book: - Includes thorough definitions of additives in the pre and probiotic space and examples of how they work; - Addresses how to test pre and probiotics and other similar additives, and how they interact with other products, with learning from both poultry and allied sectors; - Combines authors from both academic and industry backgrounds on all chapters, to ensure coverage is balanced, robust and commercially relevant. Based on the renowned World Poultry Science Association UK Branch Poultry Science Symposium 2022, this book provides a thorough and valuable contribution to the field for all involved with the nutrition and production of poultry.

        Irrigation and Drainage Performance Assessment

        Practical Guidelines

        by Marinus G Bos, Martin Burton, David J Molden

        Effective irrigation and drainage systems are essential if growing demands for water resources are to be met. For the use of water for irrigation to be improved we must understand current levels of performance. This book draws together the growing body of knowledge on irrigation and drainage performance assessment that has been gained over the last twenty years. It provides guidelines for practitioners to enable them to design and carry out performance assessment and implement performance-based management. Developed by a working group of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) it provides a generic framework for performance assessment with guidance on the theory and practice of how to audit and assess the performance of irrigation and drainage schemes.

        Der Fall Wagner

        Schriften-Aufzeichnungen-Briefe. Herausgegeben und mit einer Chronik sowie einem Nachwort versehen von Dieter Borchmeyer

        by Friedrich Nietzsche, Dieter Borchmeyer, Dieter Borchmeyer

        Friedrich Nietzsche wurde am 15. Oktober 1844 in Röcken bei Lützen als Sohn eines Pastors geboren. Er studierte in Bonn und Leipzig zunächst Sprachwissenschaften und evangelische Theologie, seinen Abschluß machte er jedoch nur in klassischer Philologie. 1868 lernte er Richard Wagner kennen, der sein Denken neben Schopenhauer stark beeinflußte. Einige Jahre später zerbrach die Freundschaft über Nietzsches Geringschätzung der Bayreuther Festspiele. 1869 wurde er auf eine Professur für Altphilologie nach Basel berufen, die er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zehn Jahre später wieder aufgab. Fortan lebte er von seiner Pension und finanzierte davon viele Reisen, u.a. in die Schweiz und nach Italien, auf denen seine wichtigsten philosophischen Werke entstanden. In seinen Hauptwerken sagte Nietzsche den Tod Gottes voraus, beschrieb den Übermenschen, trat für die Umwertung aller Werte ein und prägte somit den Nihilismus. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen Also sprach Zarathustra (1883) und Ecce Homo (1908). In den 1880er Jahren nahmen seine körperlichen und seelischen Leiden zu und gipfelten 1889 in einem Zusammenbruch, von dem er sich nicht mehr erholte. Bis zu seinem Tod am 25. August 1900 in Weimar wurde er von seiner Mutter und seiner Schwester gepflegt. Dieter Borchmeyer, geboren 1941, ist Professor emeritus an der Universität Heidelberg, war Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste und lehrt im Rahmen der Stiftungsdozentur »Heidelberger Vorträge zur Kulturtheorie« weiterhin an der Universität Heidelberg. Borchmeyers Arbeitsfeld ist vor allem die deutsche Literatur vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert und das Musiktheater mit Monographien zu Goethe, Schiller, Mozart, Wagner und Nietzsche. Zuletzt erschien von ihm Was ist deutsch? (2017). Revolutionen in der Naturwissenschaft

        by I. Bernard Cohen, Werner Kutschmann

        Wie konnte sich der Ausdruck ›Revolution‹, der ursprünglich immerhin ein Terminus für astronomische Vorgänge, Umläufe oder Umdrehungen von Himmelskörpern, gewesen war, in einen Begriff der politischen Macht- und Herrschaftsgeschichte verwandeln? Und wie kam es dazu, dass dieser gesellschaftspolitische Revolutionsbegriff wiederum auf die Naturwissenschaften und deren Erkenntnisgeschichte angewandt wurde? Ist es überhaupt legitim, den Begriff der politischen Revolution einschließlich all seiner machttheoretischen Konnotationen auf den Siegeszug einer naturwissenschaftlichen Idee, eines erkenntnisleitenden Paradigmas, zu übertragen, wie es uns die theoretische Wissenschaftsgeschichtsschreibung seit Th. S. Kuhn lehrt? Die sind die Fragen, mit denen Cohens Untersuchung über Revolutionen in der Naturwissenschaft anhebt. Cohen verfolgt einen Zeitraum von mehr als vier Jahrhunderten umspannt und nahezu alle wichtigen Bereiche der Naturwissenschaften erfasst – von der Astronomie bis zur Evolutionstheorie, von den Geowissenschaften bis zur Freudschen Psychoanalyse, von der Galileischen Kinematik bis zur Einsteinschen Relativitätstheorie und Atomphysik -, die historische Kariere eines Begriffs, der sich in mehreren Wandlungen und Metamorphosen durch die Naturwissenschafts- und Sozialgeschichte hindurchzieht, um letztlich als der entscheidende Begriff des mit Kuhn vollzogenen sociological turn in der Wissenschaftsgeschichtsschreibung eine neue Auferstehung zu erleben.

        Bulletin of the John Rylands Library 98/1

        The Artist of the Future Age: William Blake, Neo-Romanticism, Counterculture and Now

        by Douglas Field

        This special issue of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library is devoted to William Blake. It explores the British and European reception of Blake's work from the late nineteenth century to the present day, with a particular focus on the counterculture. Opening with two articles by the late Michael Horovitz, an important figure in the 'Blake Renaissance' of the 1960s, the issue goes on to investigate the ideological struggle over Blake in the early part of the twentieth century, with particular reference to W. B. Yeats. This is followed by articles on the artistic avant-garde and underground of the 1960s and on Blake's significance for science fiction authors of the 1970s. The issue closes with an article on the contemporary Belgian art collective maelstrÖm reEvolution.

        The flâneur and his city

        Patterns of daily life in Paris 1815–1851

        by Richard D. E. Burton, Mike Thompson

        The book provides a 'flâneur's eye view' of Parisian life in the first half of the nineteenth century: dress, cafés and restaurants, but also shops and passages, the omnibus, bals publics and carnival. The author provides general conclusions about the private and public spheres in 'le vieux Paris'. Like the flâneur, the author concentrates less on factual information for its own sake - which may be found in the secondary works cited in the text and footnotes - than on the 'semiological' or anthropological significance of the cultural forms in question. Links are drawn between cultural institutions and class relations in pre-1850 Paris, with particular emphasis on cultural inequality, on the persistence of cross-class contacts, and the growing differences between classes as reflected in behaviour and attitudes. ;

        Michael Winterbottom

        by Brian McFarlane, Deane Williams, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        This is the first book-length study of the most prolific and most critically acclaimed director working in British cinema today. Michael Winterbottom has also established himself, and his company, Revolution Films, as a dynamic force in world cinema. No other British director can claim such an impressive body of work in such a variety of genres, from road movie to literary adaptation, from musical to sex film, to stories of contemporary political significance. The authors of this book use a range of critical approaches to analyse the filmmaker's eclectic interests in cinema and the world at large. With this in mind, the realist elements of such films as Welcome to Sarajevo are examined in the light of a long history of cinema's dealings with realism, as far back as post-war Italian neo-realist filmmaking; whereas Jude and The claim are approached as both literary adaptations (a continuing strand in British cinema history) and examples of other reworked genres (the road movie, the western). This lively study of his work, written in a wholly accessible style, will engage all those who have followed his career as well as those with a wide-ranging interest in British cinema.

        Das Bacon-Projekt

        Von der Erkenntnis, Nutzung und Schonung der Natur

        by Lothar Schäfer

        "Das »Bacon-Projekt« definiert einen Grundzug der Moderne; während in der Antike die Erkenntnis der Natur als Selbstzweck galt, betrachtet sie die Neuzeit als ein Mittel zur Mehrung des allgemeinen Menschenwohls. Die Naturforschung soll die Entwicklung einer Technik ins Werk setzen und damit dem Menschen Machtmittel zur Verfügung stellen, durch die er sich aus materieller Not und Naturabhängigkeit befreien kann. Francis Bacon (1551-1626) war der Propagandist der neuen Zielbestimmung der Naturforschung. Die in den modernen Industrieländern praktizierte technische Form der Naturnutzung ist infolge der jetzt offenkundig werdenden Schädigungen an der Natur zunehmend unter Kritik geraten. Mit den Befunden der »ökologischen Krise« wird nicht nur auf die Bedrohlichkeit der Technikfolgeschäden hingewiesen, sondern es wird zugleich die neuzeitliche Art der Naturforschung für die absehbare Katastrophe verantwortlich gemacht. Hans Jonas hat deshalb verlangt, daß wir das »Baconsche Ideal« aufgeben und uns dem Gedanken der Bewahrung der Natur verschreiben. Nicht länger sollten Ziele und Zwecke des Menschen die Grundlage unseres Handelns gegenüber der Natur sein; das »Prinzip Verantwortung« gebiete vielmehr, die in der westlichen Zivilisation dominant gewesene »Anthropozentrik« zu verabschieden und die Eigenrechte der Natur in unserem Handeln zu respektieren. Gegen diese pauschale Beschuldigung der Moderne ist die vorliegende Studie gerichtet. Schäfer sieht durch die ökologische Krise nicht die Aufkündigung des Baconschen Ideals geboten - wohl aber eine drastische Revision des »Baconschen Programms«, d.h. der Mittel und Methoden, mit denen das Ideal seither verfolgt wurde."
