Focussing on professional politicians Klaus Stolz investigates the interrelationship between political career patterns and political institutions in two of the most widely discussed cases of regionalism: Catalonia and Scotland. The study deals with two different yet closely related sets of questions: Firstly, how do professional politicians pursue their careers in the regional context. And secondly, how do they shape and reshape the political institutions in which they pursue these careers. The monograph is based on extensive empirical research including a comprehensive data set on the careers of Catalan and Scottish parliamentarians, systematic surveys of regional representatives as well as in-depth interviews of a wide range of politicians and experts in both regions. Exploring the effects of political professionalisation on regional democracy, Stolz goes way beyond traditional studies of regionalism and decentralization, while his focus on the regional career arena introduces a much needed territorial dimension to the study of political careers. Rich original data, innovative theoretical concepts and a strictly comparative approach are the basis for a study that considerably deepens and enhances our understanding of the tremendous political changes both Catalonia and Scotland are undergoing. Thus, the book is of interest to the still growing number of scholars concerned with devolution in the UK, the Spanish autonomous communities as well as to those interested in regional politics and regionalisation in general. Edward Bond wurde 1934 in der Londoner Vorstadt Holloway geboren. 1956 schrieb er erste Gedichte und Stückentwürfe und trat 1960 einer Dramatikergruppe um John Osborne, Arnold Wesker und John Arden bei. 1962 wurde Bonds erstes Stück, The Pope's Wedding (Die Hochzeit des Papstes), in London uraufgeführt. Sein zweites Theaterstück, Saved (Gerettet), provozierte einen der größten Skandale der britischen Theatergeschichte: Das Stück wurde kurz nach seiner Premiere im November 1965 im Royal Court Theatre aufgrund von expliziter Gewaltdarstellung von der Zensur verboten. Die sich anschließende Diskussion um Freiheit der Kunst bewirkte 1968 das Ende der britischen Theaterzensur. Große Erfolge wurden Anfang der 1970er Jahre seine Lear-Bearbeitung und das Stück The Sea (Die See). In den kommenden Jahrzehnten zahlreiche Stücke, Opernlibretti für Hans Werner Henze, Arbeit an Theatern, für den Film (u.a. Mitarbeit am Drehbuch zu Antonionis Film Blow up) und das Fernsehen. Edward Bond lebt in der Nähe von Cambridge. Harald Mueller, geb. am 18. Mai 1934 in Memel, war u. a. Theaterautor und Dramaturg. Für den Suhrkamp Verlag übersetzte er Werke von Bernard Shaw ins Deutsche. Er starb am 27. Dezember 2021. Klaus Reichert, geboren 1938, emeritierter Professor für Anglistik an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, 1964-1968 Lektor in den Verlagen Suhrkamp und Insel, 2002-2011 Präsident der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung in Darmstadt. Autor, Übersetzer und Herausgeber (u. a. der Joyce-Ausgabe des Suhrkamp Verlages). Christian Enzensberger, geboren 1931 in Nürnberg und verstorben 2009 in München, war Professor für Englische Literaturgeschichte an der Universität München. Er übersetzte zahlreiche Werke aus dem Englischen ins Deutsche.

Man hat an Simmel, dessen Aufsätze man auch in den Feuilletonspalten großer Tageszeitungen las, zuweilen gerügt, man finde bei ihm mehr die Gedanken als den durchgehenden Grundgedanken einer originären Philosophie. Wie wir jedoch sahen, wachsen die verschiedenen Stücke seiner Lebensphilosophie aus einem einheitlichen Prinzip. Daneben läßt sich noch ein anderes, auf elementarer Ebene seines Denkens liegendes Prinzip aufweisen, von dem her er die Dinge anging und das er freilich selbst nie in völliger Allgemeinheit gefaßt hat. Man könnte dieses Prinzip abkürzend als »Dialektik ohne Versöhnung« bezeichnen. Simmel denkt - und dieses Eigenste bleibt sich durch seine Wandlungen hindurch konstant - nicht von einer metaphysischen Einheit her, die sich erst sekundär in das Einzelne ausfaltet und es nach wie vor auf seinem Grunde trägt und zusammenhält, sondern er macht Ernst mit dem »pluralistischen Universum«. Am Anfang steht das Einzelne, und höhere Ganzheiten kommen - Leibnizisch - erst zustande durch die Beziehungen des Einzelnen aufeinander. Die Kategorien schon des frühen Simmel der »Relativität« im Erkenntnisbereich, der »Wechselwirkung« im sozialen haben hier ihren Ursprung. It was a popular religion, which shared with orthodoxy an acceptance of scriptual authority and apostolic tradition and held a sacramental doctrine of salvation, but understood all these in a radically different way to the Orthodox Church. One of the differences was the strong part demonology played in the belief system. This text traces, through original sources, the origins of dualist Christianity throughout the Byzantine Empire, focusing on the Paulician movement in Armenia and Bogomilism in Bulgaria. Prior to 1900 only a few chemicals had been employed as pesticides but in the early 1940s, as the Second World War raged, the insecticide DDT and the herbicide 2-4-D were developed. These changed everything. Since then, farmers have been using a growing list of insecticides, herbicides and fungicides to protect their crops. Their use has undoubtedly led to significant gains in agricultural production and reduction in disease transmission, but also to major problems: health concerns for both users of pesticides and the general public, the emergence of resistance in pest populations, and environmental problems. The book examines the development of legislation designed to control and restrict the use of pesticides, the emergence of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and the use of biological control agents as part of policy to protect the environment and encourage the sustainable use of pesticides. Finally, the use of new technologies in pest control are discussed including the use of genetic modification, targeted pesticide application and use of drones, alongside basic requirements for IPM such as crop rotations, close seasons and adoption of plant varieties with resistance to pests and diseases.

Schönheit«, so heißt es bei Thomas von Aquin, »ist der Glanz der Ordnung.« Ordnung hat immer auch eine ästhetische Qualität, wie umgekehrt die Schönheit von geordneten Strukturen, von Gesetzmäßigkeiten bestimmt ist. Davon ausgehend stellt Klaus Berger die Frage, ob nicht auch die höchste Kunst, die Kunst, glücklich, und gerecht zu leben, insgesamt etwas zu tun hat mit der ästhetischen Gestaltung und Wahrnehmung der Welt. Nach einer Skizze der verschiedenen Ethik-Modelle in Geschichte und Gegenwart entwickelt Berger seine eigene Perspektive. Dabei geht es ihm weniger um die Probleme der Alltagsmoral als um grundsätzliche Fragen, deren Beantwortung jeder Ethik vorausgeht: Wie kann man notwendige Normen verankern in dem, was ein Mensch tatsächlich erlebt, denkt und tut? Kann es überhaupt allgemeingültige Regeln geben, die den ganzen Menschen in seiner Widersprüchlichkeit erfassen? Klaus Bergers Versuch einer Grundlegung der Ethik erfolgt aus dem Geist der Religion. Bergers Position ist radikal, und in diesem Sinne deutet er auch die Gebote der Bibel, die in ihrer Schärfe für die europäische Kultur noch immer wirksamer sind, als Philosophie und Theologie gelegentlich erklärt haben.
