        Plagues of the heart

        Crisis and covenanting in a seventeenth-century Scottish town

        by Michelle D. Brock

        Using a wide range of archival material, Plagues of the heart provides a fresh understanding of religion and identity not only in seventeenth-century Scotland, but in protestant communities across the early modern world grappling with a range of interrelated crises. By examining the 'culture of covenanting' in the southwestern port-city of Ayr between the British civil wars and the Revolution of 1688, this book reveals how adherence to the National Covenant of 1638 and the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643 informed the identities and lived experiences of a generation of Scots. This is the compelling story of one Scottish town and its remarkable minister, but it demonstrates how in the early modern period, especially when it came to matters of faith, the local was imbedded rather than isolated, engaged rather than insular.

        Time and world politics

        Thinking the present

        by Kimberly Hutchings, Simon Tormey, Jon Simons

        This book offers the first authoritative guide to assumptions about time in theories of contemporary world politics. It demonstrates how predominant theories of the international or global 'present' are affected by temporal assumptions, grounded in western political thought, that fundamentally shape what we can and cannot know about world politics today. The first part of the book traces the philosophical roots of assumptions about time in contemporary political theory. The second part examines contemporary theories of world politics, including liberal and realist International Relations theories and the work of Habermas, Hardt and Negri, Virilio and Agamben. In each case, it is argued, assumptions about political time ensure the identification of the particular temporality of western experience with the political temporality of the world as such and put the theorist in the unsustainable position of holding the key to the direction of world history. In the final chapter, the book draws on postcolonial and feminist thinking, and the philosophical accounts of political time in the work of Derrida and Deleuze, to develop a new 'untimely' way of thinking about time in world politics. ;

        Infectious Fungi, Second Edition

        by Brian R. Shmaefsky, Ph.D. and David L. Brock

        Fungi are much more than moldy creatures that decompose old food. In fact, infectious fungi are among the most common disease-causing agents in the world. Whether afflicted with ringworm or thrush, nearly all people will contract a fungus at least once. While most cases produce only annoying consequences, some can be quite deadly. Millions in the tropics die each year from this disease, and the problem is becoming more and more common in the United States. In Infectious Fungi, Second Edition students will learn about the symptoms, ailments, and treatment options of a variety of infectious fungi, as well as the challenges now facing the treatment of this disease and the growing threat to public health.

        Spectaculum 52

        Sieben moderne Theaterstücke

        by Hermann Broch, Max Frisch, Ulrich Plenzdorf, Georg Seidel, Botho Strauß, Marlene Streeruwitz

        Hermann Brock: Die Erzählung der Magd ZerlineWenn die Magd Zerline erzählt, dann entstehen Räume der Vergangenheit, wir erleben die junge Zofe, die Personen, denen sie gedient hat, der Baronin und dem Gerichtspräsidenten. Hermann Broch zeigt uns die Welt einer Dienstmagd, die mit preußischer Strenge den Haushalt führt, die uns aber auch ihre Sehnsucht nach der Vergangenheit und ihre Leidenschaft offenbart.Max Frisch: Jonas und sein VeteranMit seiner letzten Arbeit für das Theater hat Max Frisch mit einer einfachen Fragestellung noch einmal einen Bogen geschlagen vom Politischen, Gesellschaftlichen zum zutiefst Persönlichen. Hinter dem Thesenabtausch zwischen Großvater und Enkel über die Frage, ob die Schweiz eine Armee braucht, wird ein Beziehungsdrama offensichtlich, ein Generationskonflikt, den uns Max Frisch hintersinnig und humorvoll vorführt.Ulrich Plenzdorf: kein runter kein fernDer Vater, bei der Staatssicherheit, ein autoritärer Haustyrann, kennt für seinen jüngeren Sohn nur eine Strafe: kein runter (zum Spielen), kein fern(sehen). Am zwanzigsten Jahrestag der DDR gerät der Junge in eine Demonstration und wird plötzlich mit seinem älteren Bruder konfrontiert, der an der Mauer, unter Schießbefehl, Wache steht.Georg Seidel: Villa JugendIn seinem letzten Stück kontrastiert Georg Seidel Lebensentwurf und Lebenswirklichkeit seiner Figuren in der DDR. Die Entwürfe der Jugend sind gescheitert, der Lehrer Neitzel verkauft seine »Villa Jugend«, verläßt die Kleinstadt und will sich in eine anonyme Mietswohnung zurückziehen. Aber die Flucht mißlingt.Botho Strauß: Die Zeit und das ZimmerDas Zimmer: Höchst unterschiedliche Besucher kommen, erzählen Geschichten von Begegnungen, verpaßten Gelegenheiten, verschwinden dann wieder. Die Zeit: Nun ziehen verschiedene Zimmer an einem Menschen vorbei, und wir hören und schauen Geschichten und irgendwie, es ist wie schon einmal Geschautes, schon einmal Geträumtes.Marlene Streeruwitz: Waikiki-BeachDas Techtelmechtel der Frau Bürgermeisterin mit dem Chefredakteur gibt den Stoff für eine Komödie, wie sie das Leben schreibt. Wie vorauszusehen, verläuft diese Verbindung nicht ohne Konflikte, die radikal, den schönen Schein keinesfalls wahrend, ausgetragen werden. Makaberer Höhepunkt, die Feinde von gestern, Chefredakteur und Bürgermeister, finden sich zu einer Männerintrige zusammen.Peter Weiss: Wie dem Herrn Mockinpott das Leiden ausgetrieben wirdHerr Mockinpott sitzt ungeduldig im Gefängnis, seine Frau schläft mit einem anderen, sein Arbeitgeber jagt ihn weg, eine Herzoperation erleichtert ihn wenig, schließlich sagt er dem Lieben Gott seine Meinung, danach scheint es ihm besser zu gehen. Amüsant und mit viel Hintersinn erzählt Peter Weiss die Hanswurstiade eines gequälten Mannes, der es nicht unterlassen kann, sich und seine Welt zu be- und zu hinterfragen.
