Jurek Becker hat sich im Laufe seines Schriftstellerlebens vielen Genres gewidmet. Er schrieb Texte fürs Kabarett, verfasste Drehbücher, wurde mit seinem ersten Roman weltberühmt, veröffentlichte Erzählungen und Essays. In seinem Nachlass fanden sich für die meisten seiner Werke Entwürfe, die er in Schulhefte geschrieben hatte – zumindest für die Texte, die nach der Übersiedlung aus der DDR nach Westberlin entstanden waren. Selbst Briefe und Postkarten schrieb Becker im Konzept, wurden häufig korrigiert, wonach die Postkarte sich bei der Abschrift ein weiteres Mal zum Original wandelte. An der gesteigerten Zahl der Postkarten, die Jurek in erster Linie in seinen letzten Lebensjahren schrieb, lässt sich ablesen, dass es ihm nicht darum ging, dem Freund, der Freundin, dem Familienmitglied eine Freude zu bereiten. Um Mitteilungen des Autors über sich selbst ging es dabei nur nachrangig. In allererster Linie lag Jurek Becker daran, den Leser für Minuten zu unterhalten. Zunehmend wurde die Postkarte eine Textform, in der sich auszudrücken dem Autor Freude bereitete. War es doch eine Form, die ihm einerseits Sprachspielerei und Albernheiten erlaubte – und ihm andererseits die Möglichkeit gab, Zuwendung zu zeigen, ohne allzu viel von sich selbst preisgeben zu müssen. In chronologische Reihenfolge und in Zusammenhang gebracht, erzählen Jurek Beckers Postkarten letztendlich, ob gewollt oder nicht, viel über seine Persönlichkeit und sein Leben, geben Auskunft über Vorlieben und Leidenschaften, ganz besonders aber über die ihm sehr eigene Art, die Liebsten aufzuheitern und sie über Trennungen hinwegzutrösten.

Half of the Quilt(Picture Book Edition) is based on the movie Heart for Heart (produced by Xiaoxiang Film Group and directed by Meng Qi). In October 1934, the fifth anti-encirclement failed, the Central Red Army evacuated the Soviet Union and began the Long March. The Red Army field hospital was bombed by enemy planes and suffered heavy casualties. Dong Xiuyun, a female soldier who stayed at the field hospital to look after the wounded, decided to take the wounded with her and chase the troops. Dong Xiuyun took in the soldiers of the various units who were left alone along the road, forming a special team. After the team came to Shazhou Village, the three female Red Army lived in Xu Xiexiu's house. When parting, Dong Xiuyun cut the only one quilt in half to Xu Xiexiu. This book nourishes the young people's spiritual world with red culture, inherits the red gene, and allows the spirit of the Long March to be passed on from generation to generation among children.

The cult of the Two Grand Elders

In Singapore and Malaysia, the inversion of Chinese Underworld traditions has meant that Underworld demons are now amongst the most commonly venerated deities in statue form, channelled through their spirit mediums, tang-ki. The Chinese Underworld and its sub-hells are populated by a bureaucracy drawn from the Buddhist, Taoist and vernacular pantheons. Under the watchful eye of Hell's 'enforcers', the lower echelons of demon soldiers impose post-mortal punishments on the souls of the recently deceased for moral transgressions committed during their prior incarnations. Chinese religion in contemporary Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan offers an ethnography of contemporary Chinese Underworld traditions, where night-time cemetery rituals assist the souls of the dead, exorcised spirits are imprisoned in Guinness bottles, and malicious foetus ghosts are enlisted to strengthen a temple's spirit army. Understanding the religious divergences between Singapore and Malaysia (and their counterparts in Taiwan) through an analysis of socio-political and historical events, Fabian Graham challenges common assumptions about the nature and scope of Chinese vernacular religious beliefs and practices. Graham's innovative approach to alterity allows the reader to listen to first-person dialogues between the author and channelled Underworld deities. Through its alternative methodological and narrative stance, the book intervenes in debates on the interrelation between sociocultural and spiritual worlds, and promotes the destigmatisation of spirit possession and discarnate phenomena in the future study of mystical and religious traditions.

His soft heart can’t skip a beat without leaving a trail of destruction. At school other students laugh at him, but still he won’t let go of his dream. When Tumbledown makes friends with a feisty troop of metal springs, they hatch a plan to save him from himself. They fan out over his wrecking ball and every time it swings they do their best to absorb the shock. The day comes when the worn-out springs turn to the Wise Old Crane for help. Tumbledown can never be a cement mixer, but maybe there are other ways, better suited to his nature. After some search, the Wise Old Crane finds a new job for Tumbledown at a construction site using his wrecking ball to smooth out the cement on the ground. It’s hard work but Tumbledown is finally happy, and he grows stronger and more skillful with every passing day.
